Here's your MUSIC INDUSTRY NEWS for this week: |
As you probably know, it’s been an extremely active and volatile time in Music Publishing over the last year especially with the sale of Bug, Chrysalis, Cherry Lane, S1 and Evergreen to BMG, and now the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s approval last Friday of the sale of EMI Music Publishing to a consortium led by Marty Bandier, Blackstone Capital, Abu Dhabi, David Geffen and Sony Corp. Already, Rakesh Sanghvi , the MD of Sony/ATV in the UK, has exited. In the US, Jon Platt exits EMI in Los Angeles and Ben Vaughn, Ex. VP/GM of EMI Nashville exits as well with other changes eminent in the coming months. As unstable as the Music Publishing side of our industry has been lately, the A&R community has been extremely quiet, though summer usually is. The big news on the A&R front was of course the exit of Martin Kierszenbaum, President of A&R at Interscope in addition to having his own imprint Cherrytree. In New York, Cal Nyantakyi exits Roc Nation. On the hiring side there are two new Urban A&R hires to report: Tab Nkhereanye and Naim Ali McNair join Wendy Goldstein’s A&R team at Universal/Republic in Los Angeles. In the UK, DJ Semtex joins Mercury UK as an A&R Consultant. With the EMI layoffs having already started, stay tuned and we'll keep tracking who is headed where!
Pulse Recording and newly formed Creative Nation have announced the formation of an exclusive partnership between the two companies for talent and songwriting. This relationship brings together Nashville and L.A. with the intention of formulating a new breed of pop and country acts with multiple levels of crossover potential, according to the press release. Creative Nation’s Barry Dean is the first songwriter to be signed to the venture.
Important calendar dates for you to plan for are for the Indie Entertainment Summit is a 5-day Music & Entertainment Conference and Festival in Los Angeles, August 1-5. Featuring over 80 in-depth workshops and seminars and over 120 concert and showcase performances as well as a majot networking event with Music Industry CEOs, A&R, investors and tour and television bookers. Headquarted in North Hollywood with events at Universal Studios Citywalk, artists can compete for a $100,000 grand Prize package of gear and services. Go to www.IESfest.com for more information.
Another conference to bring to your attention is the 3rd annual Music Forum Barcelona September 20-21. You can find more information at http://bit.yl/N8k21g Another conference of note is the Driven Music Conference in Atlanta, October 5-7.
