Well it seems like this week's newsletter is mostly all about Spencer Bohren... and with good reason.
The Ozark Blues Society has been able to work with several local organizations this year to help start what we hope will be an annual artist in residency program. The idea is to bring a blues artist to the area for several days and schedule a number of performances that provide a variety of blues programming options... blues education and entertainment (the music, the history, the heritage and the artists), at local schools, libraries and music venues.
To start things off, we were able to partner with the Walton Arts Center to get Spencer to perform his award winning "Down the Dirt Road Blues" in some local schools during the day on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
We also partnered with Downtown Bentonville Inc. and are happy to be able to present Spencer for a concert and storytelling appearance at the Tusk & Trotter on Wednesday evening, which will feature New Orlean Style Cuisine created especially for the evening.
On Thursday, we once again worked with the Bentonville Public Library to present the 5th Annual Blues @ the Bentonville Library featuring Spencer's newest presentation "Westward" . Also, as part of this years' Blues @ the Library Program - Joe Pitts is scheduled for a slide guitar workshop and performance on Saturday October 20th.
Additional details of these events are listed below.

5th Annual Blues @ the Bentonville Library Programs |
Blues at the Bentonville Library
October 11 @ 6:30 PM - Spencer Bohren
October 20 @ 2:00 PM - Joe Pitts
Join us for our fifth annual "Blues @ the Bentonville Library" event, starring Spencer Bohren and Joe Pitts! Both of these events are free and family friendly.
On Thursday, October 11th Spencer will be presenting his new program, Westward, which is based on our country's expansion west.
Ever since the first ships filled with adventurers and colonists arrived on the eastern seaboard from Europe in the 16th Century, much of America's history has involved a steady movement to the west, often at great physical and personal cost to the settlers and their families. From the push across the Appalachians into the wilderness to the mile-wide Mississippi River, across the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the deserts, and the High Sierras to the California coast, music often made the arduous journey a little easier. Some of those songs survive to this day, and Spencer Bohren utilizes a selection of those very songs to orchestrate his telling of the tale of America's Westward Expansion. You may find yourself singing along as Spencer guides you through the Cumberland Gap, into the middle of the country, and over the mountains on your journey to the land of the setting sun.
On Saturday, October 20th Joe will present a slide guitar workshop, followed by a set starring Joe and his band.
Hailed as one of the most soulful blues-rock guitarists today, Joe Pitts is pulling influences from yesterday
into today. Joe has been compared to guitarists such as Duane Allman and Walter Trout. Although his influences range from Jeff Beck to Roy Buchanan, Joe is known worldwide for his slide guitar work.
From funk to jazz to blues to rock and everything in between, Joe is a musician's musician. Touted as one of Arkansas' best musicians, this international touring artist has played hundreds of shows, touring all over the world!
Mark your calendars and tell your friends. These two events should not be missed.

"They call it 12 bar blues because people like Little Brother Montgomery and other guys started putting a left hand boogie beat to 'em. In those days, if the beat wasn't uptempo, they called it ''barrelhouse'' and if it was uptempo, they called it 'Dudlow' or 'Dudlow Joe.' They would call this left hand putting the dudlow to the blues. After people got wise enough to commercialize it, somebody said, 'We'll call this boogie-woogie."
