Orientation course sets APCSS record

In January, 148 American and international Fellows attended the popular one-week Asia-Pacific Orientation Course to become the largest class in APCSS history.  Although the majority of Fellows were from U.S. Pacific Command and other on-island major component commands as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, USAID, and U.S. Strategic Command, this class also included non-U.S. participants.   Read more...

Visiting Japan


 

APCSS Professors Dr. Jeffrey HornungDr. David Fouse and Jessica Ear (not shown), visited Japan in January to work on a special trilateral workshop publication. During the trip, Dr. Hornung and Dr. Fouse met with APCSS Alumni including Major Gen. Naotada Moriyama( EC04-3), Rear Admiral Eiichi Funada (SE07-2), Lt. Gen. Koichiro Bansho (EC00-2, CRC08-1) and Col Nakano who was a speaker at an APCSS course.

Faculty News & Publications

In January, Dr. Rouben Azizian participated in the George C. Marshall Center's Senior Executive Seminar which focused on regional cooperation and security in Central Asia.  He was also invited to speak at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) and their student-run organization Political Analysis and Strategy Simulations (PASS).

 

Dr. David Fouse was interviewed by Voice of America on Japan's new stimulus plan - "Japan's Abe Unveils Massive Stimulus Plan."  

 

Dr. Jeffrey Hornung has been doing a lot of writing recently including a guest blog for the Council on Foreign Relations   "Japan, a Consequential Power"  and an article for  The Diplomat called "Japan and India's Growing Embrace." He was also quoted in the January 25 edition of Japan’s Shukan Posuto in an article entitled “Naze Abe Shushou ha Nyu-Yo-Ku Taimuzu ni Kokuhyou saretaka” (Why is Prime Minister Abe severely criticized by the New York Times?).

 

Dr. Alex Vuving was quoted in this Thanh Nien News article "East Sea tensions heat up as Philippines approaches UN tribunal."

The Interface of Science, Technology & Security

“The Interface of Science, Technology & Security” edited Virginia Watson, Ph.D., is the latest publication produced by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. The eBook includes updated papers from an APCSS science & technology (S&T) workshop which identified and assessed the most significant current and emerging scientific and technological developments, evaluated their impact on international security, and recommended priority S&T and security policy agenda items based on Asia-Pacific perspectives.
