Greetings From Your Editor... |
|
|
I decided to Google and findout what "holidays" fell on this particular weekend. Well, to my surprise, there were actually plenty... from heartfelt to downright wacky (which is right up my alley, if you hadn't noticed by now!) May 17 is ...are you ready?... "Pack Rat Day." Yes, those of you so inclined can celebrate all your "stuff." Keeping in the music vein here, aside from the myraids of albums, CDs and downloads, I imagine many blues-type fans will have their share of memorabilia that they just can't turn loose.
May 17 is also National Bike To Work Day. Now, stretching that a bit, you could save a bit of gas by biking to some nearby blues. Okay, probably not the norm unless it's a motorcycle. Although I know I'll see some bicycles pull up to the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point, CA this weekend.
May 18 is "Armed Forces Day" here in the USA. On this day we salute all of the men and women in all branches of the service who protect our country.
Happy Birthday this weekend to Taj Mahal (May 17) and Jimmy Thackery (May 19).
Have you made it to our Facebook "Rewards Program?" You can win some amazing things like the "Sin City Soul & Blues Revival" package worth $1550, CD packages, festival tickets and more. There's also a link where musicians can signup and load a YouTube song to be considered for our digital magazine themes song!
Talk to ya next week!
Your ever-grateful editor...
Michele Lundeen

John Primer and Bob Corritore :: KNOCKIN' AROUND THESE BLUES |
|
Both John Primer and Bob Corritore are deeply rooted in the classic Chicago blues tradition, so it was only a matter of time before they collaborated. The only surprise is that it took them this long. But the resulting CD, 'Knockin' Around These Blues, was well worth the wait, and has brought out the best in both artists. Primer digs deep into the raw and heavy sound that he started out playing with the veterans of Chicago's South Side blues scene. Corritore's harp wails and moans with echoes of Little Walter, Junior Wells and James Cotton, while still sounding unmistakably like his own man.
The session covers material meticulously selected from the songbooks of such Windy City blues icons as Little Walter, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Willie Dixon and Jimmy Reed, in addition to Texas bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins, among several others, and features a crack team assembly of A-list players that includes guitarists Billy Flynn and Chris James, pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, bassists Bob Stroger and Patrick Rynn, as well as Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith and Brian Fahey on drums. The result is one of the most consistently satisfying traditional-style blues releases since the heyday of Chicago blues. So put it on, turn it up, and enjoy the sounds of these two consummate pros Knockin' Around These Blues!

Dudley Taft :: DEEP DEEP BLUE |
|
On Deep Deep Blue, guitarist/singer Dudley Taft, pulls together his influences – geographical, biographical and musical – and filters them through his blue soul. The result is a genre-busting slab of tunes, blending his Midwestern roots with his love of the blues, the British Invasion and Southern Rock, seasoned with songwriting and musicianship nurtured through 30-plus years as a musician. The new album includes eight originals, plus deft takes on a diverse group of covers from Bob Dylan (“Meet Me in the Morning”), Lou Reed (“Sally Can’t Dance”) and Freddie King (“Palace of the King”).
Dudley Taft’s slashing style of guitar playing, honed from years of work in a host of rock bands based in cities from Indianapolis and Houston, to Los Angeles and Seattle, has given his blues-fueled repertoire a decidedly edgier tone, which accentuates the tension and energy of the songs.
The songwriting and planning for Deep Deep Blue began in 2012, shortly after he moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The new CD was recorded at Seattle's Studio X and London Bridge, with drums by Scott Vogel and Chris Leighton, bass by John Kessler and keyboards by Eric Robert. Overdubs and Taft's guitar tracks were recorded at his home studio in Chapel Hill.
“I’m not about regurgitating stuff that everybody has done before.” Taft says. “The blues legends of old were breaking the rules; they were doing what they wanted. I'm just doing what comes naturally to me.”

Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival Coming May 25-26 |
Performer's Spotlight: A Tribute To Finis Tasby with Elvin Bishop, featuring Curtis Salgado, Rick Estrin, Kid Andersen and Andy Santana
Remembered by many these days as a founding member of the groundbreaking Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin Bishop has also tasted pop success with his 1976 smash hit "Fooled Around and Fell In Love." Bishop's long and varied career has included other musical stops along the way as well, from deep down gutbucket blues played in smoky South Side Chicago taverns, to raucous roadhouse R&B, to rollicking good time rock & roll. And at every stage along the way, he's imbued all of his music with deep passion, a uniquely creative spirit, and more than a little bit of sly humor. Joining the legendary Elvin Bishop will be Award-winning vocalists/songwriters/harmonica icons Curtis Salgado and Rick Estrin, as well as Norwegian blues guitarist Kid Andersen and veteran West Coast musician Andy Santana.
The 24th Annual Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 25th & 26th, 2013. 2013 promises to continue our tradition of bringing fans a full weekend of nonstop award-winning entertainment, more food choices than you can sample in two days, and activities to keep kids of all ages entertained too.

The Blues Stage will feature some of the most talented and renowned Blues & Roots acts in the world both Saturday and Sunday.
Both stages feature lots of viewing space plus large dance floors. In addition, this family friendly event has a giant kids area featuring bouncers, rock walls, specialty acts, crafts and talent shows. There are also food booths and many crafts and merchandise booths.
