Hi Everyone,
Well, clearly this week we have to talk about the Greater Chicago Jewish Festival held this past Sunday June 8. What a phenomenal event!! More than 25,000 of our nearest and dearest friends showed up for an absolutely incredible day in the park. In my subjective opinion, the Festival was highlighted by the Flash Mob that included so many of you. Videos and pictures are trickling in while we wait for the official festival video. Meanwhile, enjoy this link courtesy of Vered and this picture courtesy of Mike Heimlich:

Big thanks go out to all of you who participated and supported this amazing project. Thanks also to Lauren Vogelstein who choreographed the dance and provided the artistic direction. And thanks also to Naomi Bayer and many others from our Festival Committee. Penny and I are very grateful to all of you. Can't wait until the next Festival. Maybe we'll have another surprise then. :o)

Moving on, Penny and I will once again be presenting Israeli dance workshops at the annual Door County Folk Festival which takes place from July 9-13 in beautiful, you guessed it, Door County. The area is a wonderful vacation/getaway location. And you can opt in or out of as much dancing as you'd like. Check it out. See the brochure belwo.
Last week, thanks to our most recent mother of twins, we brought this dance back into the repertoire:

For those who try to find Israeli dance videos on line, I wanted to make sure you know that you can find many of them at:
http://www.rokdim.co.il/rikudim/chipusRikudimOL.asp
You can watch the whole video there on the site. And if you want to download it, you can make arrangements to purchase it there. I do believe that for the most part, once a dance makes it on to the Rokdim site, it is less likely to change than dances published only in other places. This is not an absolute rule of the universe, but in general I believe it is so. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of this resource.
As always, enjoy!

Join our friendly group to connect with Israeli culture, enjoy some physical activity and sharpen your memory through Israeli folk dancing. We do plenty of circle and line dances, with some partner dances mixed in.
Most of the dances we do are beginner/intermediate level. All ages and experience levels are welcome, including children accompanied by a parent.
We meet almost every Monday with dances for beginners from 7 pm to 7:45 pm and then move on to intermediate dances until around 8:30. When time permits, we take a few requests from 8:30 to 8:45. Visitors are always welcome. Our regular dancers love to watch the more advanced dances. If visiting from out of town, we'll play requests if you tell us ahead of time.
Our partner dance repertoire is small and still growing. Women are encouraged (but not required) to learn both parts. The etiquette in our group is partner switching/partner rotation.
Open to the community. For security purposes, we ask that people joining for the first time contact the CBS office at (630) 961-1818, and ask for Dorothy, to let us know you are coming, and to make sure that we are meeting on that date.

The Champions Of Israeli Folk Dancing - The Results
|
CONGRATULATIONS TO BRURIA AND YORAM WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE NORTH AMERICAN FINALS AT RIKUD!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REPRESENTING US.
I will simply present the results as I understand them. The circle winner was Joan Hantman who now lives in LA but "grew up" as a dancer in the Boston area. The partner winners were Fran Amkraut (LA, originally NY) and Alana Grunspan (FL).
There has been a lot of discussion about this already, and there is sure to be a lot more. But regardless, congratulations to all the participants, and best of luck to the three winners when they compete in Israel.
UPDATE - The following is an excerpt from an email that Gadi sent out following the weekend:
"... Since the final competition at camp Rikud, I am beside myself. I was so sorry to see how my good intention and efforts to create something new and exciting turned into a painful matter.
Unfortunately, due to the noncompliance of the rules and regulations set forth by myself and my team, regrettably and after much deliberation we have come to the difficult decision to forfeit the results of the competition.
I understand the disappointment and heartache that this has created, so in appreciation and gratitude for your participation and for your understanding, I would like to personally invite you to watch the finals at Camp Bitnua, taking place in Eilat in November, as my personal guest..."

To all the madrichim and dancers:
We have a fantastic festival coming up with Gadi Bitton and Elad Shtamer. We also have Avihu Medina who will be with us throughout the festival as we dance to his songs. Nona Malki and Karina Lambert will be with us this year as well.
For those who can stay a longer period of time in Toronto, we are planning a pre-festival dance evening on Thursday, June 26th and a post festival bar-b-que and dance evening on Monday, June 30th.
Plan to be with us.
We would be most appreciative if you would pass this information on to your fellow dancers and send the attached flyer to your distribution lists.
See you in Toronto!
Sofie & Inbal
