Hello everyone!
It’s been a big year at Laurey’s. First and foremost we owe a big thanks to our customers, friends & family for all the support and resources you have provided us this past year. There were some dark days and you helped light them up. As we approach the year anniversary of Laurey's death, all of us here are finally patting ourselves on the back. We did it. We made it through the year. Because of our hard work and your customer support the doors are still open!
As some of you may know, we had many conversations over the last decade with Laurey about whether Laurey’s (the business) could exist without Laurey (the person). We believed it could as long as we could agreed on some main principles for the company that would secure the workplace culture we wanted. We learned some tools from the Zingerman's folks in Ann Arbor which helped us craft our "North Star". Laurey wrote about it occasionally, but we'd like to remind you of it. We aim to run a profitable business (1) as we take care of each other (2), take care of our customers (3), take care of the Earth (4), and make and serve delicious food (5). We will carry on in this manner. The same manner in which Laurey started the business 28 years ago. She was a pioneer and she took a big chance. Well, she took a lot of them over the years actually. Guts. Moxie. Hootspah. Whatever it is you call it she had plenty of it. We have some too. And so here we are and here we’ll stay as long as you’ll have us.
You may notice some changes in the next few months. We will continue to offer the best food we can and the best service we can in our beautiful sunlit café. Those things will stay the same. We are also welcoming any feedback you’d like to give about our place, good or bad. We mean it. Let us know at contact@laureysyum.com.
We promise to keep you updated every two weeks if you promise to keep coming back. Deal?
We'd also thank Heather for her thoughtful contributions over the last year. She worked hard to keep the newsletter moving while the rest of us handled the daily affairs of the business. She plans to contribute more from time to time, but for now we are proud to present the latest ideas and events coming from our organization. It might not always be us writing. We have very interesting and talented staff members who will help contribute and craft this newsletter. (By the way, attracting interesting and talented staff members is a 6th "honorable mention" in our North Star). These folks have tremendous passion and energy and are full of ideas. For now, we want to make sure you know how much we appreciate you.
Adam & Emily (and, of course, Henry)
