A note from Heather
Dear friends,
Thank you, thank you, never enough ways to say thank you.
Last spring, our friend and Asheville-connector Fred Meyer asked me to speak with Joe Scully, chef extraordinaire, owner of Corner Kitchen, Chestnut, and long-time amigo and admirer of Laurey's.
Joe was determined to commemorate "Laurey's amazing and enduring contribution to our culinary scene here in Asheville."
With backing from a lively group, chief among them Laurey's dear friend and community leader Eleanor Owen, Joe spearheaded a drive to establish a new scholarship at ABTech in Laurey's name, guided by Sue Olesiuk and the marvelous team from ABTech's office of College Advancement.
Last June we held a kickoff event to establish the Laurey Masterton “Don’t Postpone Joy” Memorial Scholarship. A number of local chefs donated food and told the crowd of how Laurey impacted the local culinary culture here in Asheville. Laurey's sweet friends in the restaurant community joined us that night: Julie and John Stehling (King Daddy and Early Girl Eatery), Mark Rosenstein (slowfood guru!), Katie and Liz Button (Curate), our neighbors at the City Bakery, and ABTech alumni Karen Donatelli (Donatelli Cake Designs) and Reza Setayesh (Rezaz).
Chef Scully said at the event, “Without Laurey, there would be no me, there would be no Asheville food scene.”
Thanks to the support of so many in the community, the Foundation has raised over $20,000 for the Scholarship, with a goal of raising $60,000 over the next 3 years.
Won't you join us in continuing this work? We are meeting to honor the first recipient of the scholarship: Petra Novotna is just completing her second year in the Baking and Pastry Arts program at ABTech's Culinary Arts.
We invite you to join us NEXT Wednesday, February 25, at 6 pm.
This time, Laurey's own chefs will prepare a lovely seated dinner. $50 per person, with wine and beer available as you wish.
Please call Laurey's staff at (828) 252-1500, or reply to this email, to reserve your place.
If you would like to make a contribution to the scholarship right away, please visit the ABTech website at www.abtech.edu/donate and choose the “Laurey Masterton Memorial Scholarship Fund” in the designate your donation menu. You can also contact the College Advancement office at 828-398-7177 or advancement@abtech.edu for additional information.
