Laurey Masterton: Don't Postpone Joy(ride)
|
A note from Heather
Dear friends,
Thank you, thank you, never enough ways to say thank you.
Taking this moment to send all of Laurey's loving friends this short note - you know there have been many changes this year, not least of them at the cafe. We thank you for your patience and support as all parties sorted out the choices there.
Laurey's courage and vision stretched far beyond everyday concerns, and we are happy to turn our focus to her greater goals.
We are bound to honor her laughing, lively spirit, and most especially her dedication to helping this community grow.
This is the THIRD year of Laurey's generous campaign - a JOY filled bicycle ride, to generate support for a program which helped her through some pretty dark times. The Livestrong program at the YMCA helped bring back her physical strength after the challenges of treatment for cancer.
She loved the folks at the YMCA, and was one of the early participants in the Livestrong program:
In addition to the physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. The 12-week program includes two 90-minute classes per week in a small group setting, which includes a wellness program suited to the individual ability level. Funded locally by YMCA of WNC and community partners, the program is offered at no cost to participants and includes a family membership to the Y for the session’s duration.
We are calling all bicycle riders, large and small, strong and beginners, to turn out again for a great fun ride, now in the lovely North Carolina Fall weather - in just a few weeks!
Click here, on the 3rd Annual JOYride! to see how to register, where to go - and come on down to the Fletcher YMCA to cheer on your bike-riding pals!

JOYride!! September 12, 2015, 9 am at the Fletcher YMCA
|
The JOYride promises great ride options, some of the best local food and brews around, and a fun celebration for survivors everywhere!
You can ride 25, 50 or 62 miles - (that's a "metric century")!!
The JOYride is a cycling event created by local legend Laurey Masterton to raise scholarship funds for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. This program serves cancer survivors in Western North Carolina on their journey to meeting holistic health goals.
Many people knew Laurey's motto, "Don't Postpone Joy."
This event was created as a fun way to support the survivorship program that helped her along her journey. With close to 200 survivors on the list prior to the inaugural JOYride, Laurey's goal was to raise enough funding for 100 survivors to participate in the program. Thanks to funds raised by the JOYride, in addition to funding from community supporters Mission Health System and Pardee Hospital Foundation, the program has been able to more than double in size, dramatically decreasing the waitlist.
Registration Fee: $51.50 (reflects the cost of $515 to send a cancer survivor through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA).
For more information about sponsorships or donating, contact Rachel Dudasik at rdudasik@ymcawnc.org or 828 210 9607.

Riding in Joy - [from Laurey, March 25, 2013]
|
[This was one of Laurey's first notes about the JOYride, from March of 2013; the ride has changed a little bit, but what fun she had designing this program!]
"Do you know that it costs $515.00 for one person to go through the Livestrong at the YMCA program? This amazing support group and exercise program for cancer survivors and their families is free to the participants. And all fundraising for the program is done locally. The Livestrong Foundation provides training but not funding for the participants.
I'm a graduate of this program - a program that was a lifegiving experience for me. Now I'm hoping to do some fun(d) raising in return.
As you may have gathered, we're doing a fun bike ride .....
Or you can become a [virtual rider], either riding at home or in the gym or on a stationary bike or some such thing, and you can [join us by] donating to the ride. However you join us, we'll be thrilled to have you.
Our aim is to raise $51,500 which will cover the cost of 100 participants in the Livestrong at the YMCA here in our area.
You can now register on line! Follow the link right here and join in, won't you? Thanks!!!"
