Donald Ray Johnson & Gas Blues Band :: BLUESIN' AROUND
|
|
Bluesin' Around is a collection of favorites of Grammy Award winning Donald Ray Johnson and The Gas Blues Band who have performed during their years together. "I met Gaspard in 2004 while on tour with the Maurice John Vaughn Revue, and we've done several tours since," Johnson says. "I was very pleased to go to France to record with this great band. It's a pleasure working with these stellar musicians.
Texas-born vocalist and drummer Donald Ray Johnson has spent a lifetime dedicated to music. He has performed with blues legends such as Big Mama Thornton, Percy Mayfield, Lowell Fulson and Philip Walker, and toured with R&B stars including The Isley Brothers, The Commodores and Teddy Pendergrass. As an original member of the R&B/disco group A Taste of Honey, Johnson was the drummer on "Boogie Oogie Oogie," a now-classic, platinum-selling recording that reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1978 and led to the group's Grammy Award for Best New Artist the following year

BMAs: Sweet news for Sugar Ray and the Bluetones
|
(Tahoe Onstage/Tim Parsons) - The 2017 Blues Music Awards should be sweet as Sugar Ray Norcia, and no matter what happens, Toronzo Cannon won’t quit his day job.
Sugar Ray and the Bluetones have entertained music lovers for more than 40 years, but somehow a Blues Music Award has not been included in the bandleader’s illustrious career. That just might change on May 11, when the hardware is awarded at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis. Norcia and his bandmates received 10 BMA nominations, the Blues Foundation [just recently] announced.
Cannon, who previously had just one BMA nomination, received four this year — Album, Contemporary Blues Album, Song and Contemporary Blues Male Artist Of The Year.
A bus driver for the city of Chicago, Cannon works four 10-hour shifts driving the No. 20 Madison route through several tax brackets from downtown to the west side of Chicago. He said his daily observations inspire songwriting.

The 2017 Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival Lineup is Complete!
|
(Annapolis, Maryland) - Chesapeake Bay Events, Inc. is pleased to announce that The Mavericks will be the closer for the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival on Saturday, May 20th, 2017.
The Mavericks are an eclectic American band, combining country music, Latin, and rockabilly influences. The Mavericks were founded in 1989 in Miami, Florida. Between 1991 and 2003, the band recorded six studio albums. Their highest-peaking American single was 1996's "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down". They are best known in the UK for their 1998 single "Dance the Night Away," which spent 18 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 4. In 1996, The Mavericks won a Grammy Award for the song "Here Comes the Rain."
Don Hooker, festival promoter stated that, "Normally, the festival doesn't repeat from year to year, but The Mavericks were so well received last year, despite the lousy weather and smaller than normal crowd, I felt that having them back made sense. They also filled the crossover band slot that we normally book each year."
Also, recently added to the Sunday bill was Robert Randolph and the Family Band, who have a new album due out in February. ...Find complete lineup and more images here
