As the Holidays swoop in on us, we need to make sure we take time to smell the roses (or the coffee!), put our feet up, surround ourselves with loved ones who nourish our souls, and, yes, give ourselves a few treats!
All too often, we hit the Holiday season already running, running, running, trying to juggle too many parties, too much festivity, too much shopping, too much spending, and too much eating, all in an effort to keep up with our own expectations and those of the people around us. And we’re doing that at a time when—quite literally—there is the least amount of energy coming to the planet from the sun to sustain us (at least that’s true in the northern hemisphere). The days are shorter, the nights are longer, and our bodies really just want to crawl under the covers and get extra rest, just about the time we start pushing ourselves to do more, more, more.
It’s little wonder that many of us hit December 26 (or January 2) with a giant sigh of relief and a feeling of total exhaustion, and thank God that it’s all over for another year!
The Holidays are supposed to be about peace, love, and joy. They are supposed to be about spending time with those we love, and telling them how we feel. It’s not supposed to be a time to party till we drop and then getting sick for a week as we recover from our excesses, or spending so much on presents that we are still paying for them three months later!
There has to be a better way!
As in all things these days, we have to strike a balance between self-love/self-care and doing all those other things we think we need to do to fulfill expectations, to create the “perfect” Holiday, and not disappoint or let anyone down. So the Holiday season can serve as yet another freaking growth opportunity, another chance to listen to our hearts and our bodies, and set boundaries! Isn’t that special?!
In case you’ve been talking yourself out of the notion that, for the last couple of years, it’s just seemed harder to do all the running around and getting everything done, you can stop talking yourself out of it. It has been harder! And that really isn’t so much a reflection that we’re getting older, as it is a reflection of the Times in which we live.
It’s been harder the last few years, because time really has been speeding up! We’re now trying to fit 24 hours’ of things into the equivalent of about 15 hours. No wonder we all feel exhausted, just trying to do all the things we did on a daily basis even 5 years ago.
On top of that, the energies of CHANGE have been continually escalating, so people are already dealing with a lot more trauma, drama, and upset in their daily lives, and are now adding Holiday pressures and activities to an already overloaded plate. (Or, continuing to try to keep running on an empty tank.)
Chaos and Loss Seem Unrelenting
The apparent chaos on the national and global scene is a reflection of what is going on inside us, and in our lives, as the Great Purge continues. A major part of the Great Shift, the Great Purge affects every person on the planet, with stronger-than-ever energies pushing us to purge everything that does not nourish and support us, and everything that is not aligned with our true selves. That includes the obvious external situations, such as jobs, homes, and relationships, as well as less obvious internal situations such as limiting beliefs about the world, ourselves, and others; outdated ways we have identified and defined ourselves; and the countless ways we judge and disrespect ourselves (and others).
Loss seems to be a big theme in the last few months, too, as we shed things from our lives, voluntarily or involuntarily—and often the very things by which we’ve defined ourselves, or the very touchstones of our lives. Loss of loved ones continues apace, leaving often devastating grief and huge vacuums in our lives. Even our furry companions seem to be leaving in droves, perhaps because their little bodies simply cannot tolerate the escalating energies.
Along with these losses comes a time of intensive self-reflection as we flail about, struggling to figure out who we are now, without whoever or whatever it was we had before. And many wonder if it's worth even continuing in the wake of the loss.
The Old Ways No Longer Work
Adding insult to injury, we are finding that the ways we used to do things—the ways that always worked—no longer bring the same results. We are in the new energies, and now we must learn new ways of doing things.
Anyone who has seen the news in the last month knows that many "old ways" are no longer being tolerated, as people are finally standing up and saying NO! (And that's a good thing!) This is significant in many ways, including being a dramatic example of how change will be effected from the grass roots, from people demanding change, rather than from the top-down, from our so-called leaders. It will have many ramifications and ripple effects in the ways we interact with each other, the ways we can all learn to treat each other with more sensitivity and respect.
Letting Go of the Idea of Control
The old ways of “go out there and make it happen,” and “take control of your life,” and “just do it!” also are no longer sustainable. The idea that we can (and should) control every aspect of our lives, including what others think of us, was always ridiculous, but before the Great Shift started making itself felt in earnest, we could succeed with that to a certain extent. Or at least some could.
But the Great Revelations that are taking place include Revelations not only about others' bad behavior, but also about our own erroneous beliefs—and that’s a big one: That we can control everything in our lives through will, alone. And now we really have to let that one go! It simply doesn’t work anymore, if it ever really did.
At minimum, it was a great way to set ourselves up to fail and judge ourselves, because every time we were unable to control everything, we could beat ourselves up and point to how ineffective we were!
The idea of control over everything in our lives and going out there and making it all happen were constructs of the excessive over-emphasis of the Masculine principle for centuries. First it was applied to things that could be controlled through brute strength, and then it was also applied to using the will to exert influence on the world.
The large influx of Divine Feminine energies—which will eventually rebalance all of the situations, beliefs, institutions, and social constructs created through the over-emphasis of the Masculine—demand that we accept that, for the most part, control is an illusion!
Even the spiritual community embraced the idea of The Secret, which some interpreted to mean that by doing a lot of visioning work (i.e, exerting conscious will), we could generate enormous wealth, perfect health, wonderful relationships, etc., etc, with no limits. So how did that work for you??
That was a classic example of a hybrid idea—an idea with one foot in the Piscean Age and one foot in the Aquarian Age. The idea is that we are powerful creators and manifesters. That's true. But, rooted firmly in the ego’s need for control and the ego’s desire for wealth, it neglected the idea that we are all co-creators, that others have free will and often don’t do what we want them to do, and that our unhealed wounds, unresolved issues, and unexamined beliefs affect the outcome of our creations and manifestations. It also neglects the important step of eliciting the assistance of our Higher Selves/God/The Universe/All That Is. That's like putting the entire recipe together without adding the magic ingredient (or forgetting to turn the oven on)!
Oh, we manifest on our own, all right. We are Divine, powerful creators, and we co-create our world in every moment, consciously or unconsciously. But the end result is affected by those wounds, issues, and beliefs and, therefore, quite often we get something very different from what we’d hoped for! That also happens when we forget to let go of the outcome and hold so tightly to what we want that nothing can get in! (And then we can judge ourselves, beat ourselves up, and start the process all over again!)
Inviting the Divine Feminine energy (and our Higher Selves, etc.) to participate in the process, and consciously co-creating, is how the miracles happen. When we are receptive to guidance and listen to our inner promptings, and then take appropriate action, using a balance of the Feminine and Masculine energies and qualities, that’s when we enter the Flow and the blessings fall all around us—not only does the Universe do the heavy lifting, but the outcome is usually much better than anything we could imagine!
How Do We Apply This?
So how do we adjust to all this and still have a Happy Holiday (and a happy life)? For starters, when we hit a wall—when we suffer an unexpected loss, when our efforts don’t pan out, when other people let us down—it helps to go inside and ask yourself questions (I find that asking them out loud helps. There is power in the spoken word.):
• What can I learn from this situation?
• What if achieving my goal would not have served me, and there is something better?
• Is there a different path that would serve me better?
• What if it’s just an issue of timing?
• What subconscious beliefs, unhealed wounds, or unresolved issues might be affecting the outcome?
• Why, exactly, am I upset with this situation/outcome (other than the fact that I didn’t get what I thought I wanted)?
And we can relax and TRUST that the Universe has our back and, perhaps, it knows better than we do what we need!
We also can begin to approach the Holidays (and life) in a different way, engaging the Divine Feminine as well as the Divine Masculine. We can give ourselves quiet time and listen for guidance, rather than constantly sending out our desires. We can strive for balance between expending energy and recharging ourselves. We can focus always on the good in our lives—even when it feels there isn’t much of it—and express gratitude for it. We can love and care for ourselves as much as we love and care for others. And we can ensure that there is always giving and receiving in everything and with everyone.
We also can start moving away from equating the amount of money spent with the amount of love expressed, and we can re-assess how much of all that bounty of new technology and consumer goods we really need to make us happy (and why). And we can replace the frenzy in our minds with peace in our hearts.
And as you inevitably fall back into auto-pilot and then realize that something you used to do no longer works the way it once did, you can pat yourself on the back, give yourself a hug, and do something new and see how that works!
Whatever you do, take it all just a little more lightly, and be freer with your laughter than you are with your judgment. These are challenging times, and we need to make extra efforts to be kind to ourselves and others! And by all means, remember to breathe!

Learning to Release Judgments
|
In the last month or so, the Universe (or, my Higher Self/God/The All That Is) has been very gently showing me that, when it comes to judging things, I don’t know what I’m doing. Mind you, I’m delighted that these are gentle illustrations and illuminations, rather than the old Cosmic 2x4 to the head that I used to get on a regular basis! I don’t know whether I learned those lessons, or they figured they’d just try a different approach.
Many of us know the old zen story about the wise man in the village who always refrains from making a judgment about things, taking a wait-and-see attitude. His grandson finds a horse and brings it back to help with work on the farm. Everyone in the village says, “Oh, that’s wonderful!” And grandfather says, “We’ll see.” The boy falls off the horse and breaks his leg. The village says, “Oh, that’s terrible!” Grandfather says, “We’ll see.” The Emperor’s army comes through the village taking all the able-bodied young me, leaving the broken-legged boy behind…… you get the drift.
Thankfully, my little illustrations weren’t so dramatic. The handyman was scheduled to come to finish some projects. He didn’t come, and didn’t call. Needless to say, I was judging that!! That night, the light over my sink detached itself and fell, leaving the electrical wires exposed. Good thing the handyman was coming the next day! I even had time to run out that morning to Home Depot to get a new light fixture! Saved me an extra call/appointment for the handyman and, because he felt bad about blowing me off, he didn’t charge me for installing the new light!
I wanted to have a shower fixture and faucets installed in the guest bathroom and I kept putting it off for no apparent reasons. I just couldn’t get myself to call. I started to beat myself up for putting it off. Then my garbage disposal broke. Hmmm… now I can include the garbage disposer on the list for the plumber’s service call.
How often do we judge things as “bad”, only to find that it turned out to be a good thing? How often have we put off going shopping for something, beat ourselves up for procrastination, and then finally felt the urge to go… to find that everything we wanted to buy was suddenly on sale?
I'm learning that it helps a lot to refrain from judging things on their face value, taking a wait-and-see attitude, and then seeing if something good comes from those things we think we want to judge as "bad". Once we can do that with the small things, it makes it easier to do with the big things!

How the Universe Talks to Us
|
Do you often drive yourself buggy trying to figure out how to hear the guidance you get from your angels/guides/Higher Self?
That's one of the most frequent questions I get in my presentations and classes. I know, most people's first response is to say that meditating at least 20 minutes every day is essential in order to listen for feedback.
That's never worked for me, and maybe it doesn't work for you? I realized long ago that my whole life is a kind of "walking meditation" or, for me, an ongoing conversation with my guides/Higher Self/God/The Universe/All That Is. Seriously!
I'm so glad we have those Bluetooth ear pieces now, because I don't look like such a bag lady as I walk down the street talking to "my entourage" as I lovingly call them.
And they have the funniest ways of telling me what I need to hear. Oh yes, there are the "usual" ways of me suddenly seeing a little video on the inside of my forehead, or even hearing a voice in my ear. But they can get really creative!
Sometimes I see answers to my questions on billboards, in ads on the sides of buses, on random posters on the wall, or in magazines. Or sometimes, I'll hear a snippet of dialog from a TV show or movie, and I suddenly know I've got the answer I needed!
There's a great new TV show on Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World. I love it because it really shows how the Universe, our Higher Selves, and our guides communicate with us—and how confused we can be about exactly what is being communicated!! Kevin is new to all this, so it's fun to see him blundering along, trying to figure it out (the way we've done)! Of course, he has the active help from a celestial being that he can see and hear. Not fair, I say! Not fair!!
Anyway, it gets easier—with time and practice —to figure out what's being communicated, but I can tell you, even now, if my most frequent prayer is "Help me!" my second most frequent prayer is "Give me clarity about this, please!"
So hang in there, and keep trying!!

Set Your Intentions for 2018!
|
I had a busy, frenzied, hectic, and amazing 2017, that mostly revolved around positioning myself and then finding and purchasing a new home, and moving! Wow! Even good stress is, well STRESS!
I was shown clearly, tho, that when I "place my order" with the Universe and then get out of the way, let go of the outcome, and wait, the Universe comes through in miraculous ways. I got a more beautiful spacious home, in a more beautiful neighborhood, and for less money, than I ever would have imagined I could hope to find!! I'm still pinching myself and expressing gratitude!
I hope to spend 2018 increasing my love, joy, happiness, health, and abundance!
That's my wish for each of you in 2018, too!
