An Experiment in Modern Music 2017 - 3 World Premiers White Horse 9/16
|
An Experiment in Modern Music 2017 - AJO Big Band plus strings horns and woodwinds - 3 World Premiers plus Rhapsody in Blue
Two bandleaders and three composers are joining forces to present a unique and original (to this area) concert of wonderful Jazz music. AN EXPERIMENT IN MODERN MUSIC. On February 12, 1924 at Aeolian Hall in New York City, Paul Whiteman (then the most popular band leader in the country) gave a concert called "An Experiment In Modern Music". The concert was to show the progression of Jazz from 1917 to 1924. From that concert came the memorable classic, George Gershwin's RHAPSODY IN BLUE. Now to present day - The Asheville Concert Jazz Orchestra (under the direction of Dr. David Wilken) will present a new EXPERIMENT IN MODERN MUSIC on September 16, 2017 at the White Horse Music Hall in Black Mountain, NC. The A.J.O. will be adding a string section, additional woodwinds and french horns for this concert. Joining David and the A.J.O. will be guest conductor RUSS WILSON (renowned vintage bandleader) and piano soloist UNC-Asheville Music Faculty, Dr. HWA-JIN KIM. The concert will present two pieces from the original 1924 concert - Victor Herbert's SUITE OF SERENADES and Gershwin's RHAPSODY IN BLUE. More importantly will be the premier of three original compositions by local jazz artists: Michael Jefry Stevens' CANVAS #1, David Wilken's SONATA #2 and Richard Shulman's INDIGO FANTASY. This is an event that is not to be missed and one that won't be soon forgotten. The Mother of the World and Other Adventures

The Mother of the World and Other Adventures
Last month I provided music for a workshop given by healer Ron Young in Roncegno, Italy. I've been working with Ron for 34 years and one of the perks of playing for his seminars is that I get to participate in the workshop. One of the assignments the group was given was to write a story based on specific archetypes. Here's one of the stories I got to write.
The Mother of the World was very pleased with all that she had birthed. And wherever she placed her attention the world was filled with lushness, plenty of water and gorgeous abundance of plant life with humungous flowers teaming with pollinators.
She loved and cared for all her creatures although the “Experiment in Free Will” was stretching her beyond the limitless oneness she was used to into something smaller and larger at the same time.
Before there was free will, all outcomes could be guaranteed - a continuous happy ending - and yet, something had been missing. “What would happen if I truly didn’t know the ending of any situation?” she mused. At that moment the predictable trajectories of her story lines abruptly shifted into numerous probabilities.
A melody floated through the air, Somehow familiar, but she swore she had not heard it before. It had predictable elements of story line - the call, the going away, and the return…. How satisfying was the return after going away!
With this new experiment, the Mother of the World felt feelings she had never felt before. She was connected with all beings in the world as always, but the Experiment in Free Will in her human children was opening them to adventure, separation and judgement. She felt the excitement of adventure, the sadness of separation, the hatred and self-hatred of judgement and sometimes another new feeling of hope, based on the anticipation of reunion.
The Mother was uncomfortable with all these new feelings and chose to visit three of her spiritual children, humans known as The Three Sisters in their cave by the sea. The Three Sisters had maintained their conscious connection with the Mother even though their human form clouded the precision of this awareness. The Mother asked the Three Sisters to investigate any area in which she was feeling a resonant pain or a parched sense of lack.
Scouring the world, the Three Sisters found The Desert Continent, which had appeared after the Experiment in Free Will had started in humans. The Desert lacked water and, had a stark emotional atmosphere. Instead of manifesting abundance, this continent supported the ability to contemplate nothingness. Settling themselves on a sand dune, the Three Sisters began to look within and each found, in the midst of the Void, a wish.
The Three Wishes were actually questions the Sisters wished answers for. They were: “What am I?” “What is my purpose?” and “What is the way to eternal life?”
As these Three Wishes appeared in their awareness, The Father of Time appeared at the foot of the dune. Eagerly, The Three Sisters asked him their questions.
The Father of Time said “I can give you a hint on the first question “What am I.” You are both eternal and mortal at the same time. The one who can help you with all three wishes is the Old Wizard and I can take you to his cave. Today just happens to be “Answer 3 Questions Tuesday!”
The Old Wizard greeted the Three Sisters saying “3 free wishes granted today…. although there may be a price to pay later……” Unfazed, the sisters asked their questions and the Old Wizard answered thus:
1. You are Divine. Part of you knows this and part of you forgets this.
2. Your purpose is to remember your Divine Oneness in every part of you. One of the ways you can do this is to help others remember.
3. In order to remember and know the Divine in yourself and All, you must develop compassion, which is the ability to remember the Divine in any one, no matter what the appearance. When your compassion becomes infinite, with no exception, you will sound the Ring of Eternity within time, and that precious sound will signal what was always yours within and without of time.
You will thus integrate all parts of yourself and All That Is into the Oneness of the Divine. All will be Grace, All will be Love, All will be God, All will be Eternal. And until you realize this throughout your being as your Eternal Now Condition, be kind to yourself and let your compass, that is your compassion, be your guide.
