Sunday wilde & Reno Jack :: TWO
|
|
Sunday wilde & Reno Jack’s new CD TWO, on Hwy 11 Records, is set for release September 15th 2017.
“Mastered by GRAMMY® winner Peter J. Moore (Bob Dylan The Basement Tapes), TWO is a raw, deliberately simple recording. No overdubs or fancy studio wizardry. Just real instruments played by real musicians. As soon as we hit play, “Howling For My Darling” graced our ears. The jolt of hearing a Howlin’ Wolf tune done in a female voice vanished in just a few bars. Wilde torched it up nicely with enough of a growl in her voice to make it legit. Singing it from a female point of view, she also added a verse so there is no mistake. Ah, ah, ah ooh-wee!” JD Nash, American Blues Scene
TWO consists of 10 songs mostly covers of Ruth Brown, Howling Wolf, Patsy Cline, and one tune by Sunday’s father called Van Horne. Available at most online retailers. TWO is already spinning worldwide on roots and blues radio programs. If you like the music request it.

Brooklyn soul dynamo Bette Smith will release her debut album, Jetlagger, September 29 via Fat Possum subsidiary Big Legal Mess. Recorded in Mississippi with producer Jimbo Mathus—who’s played on records by everyone from Valerie June to Elvis Costello—the album finds Smith reconnecting with the Deep South roots of the gospel, soul, and blues music she grew up singing in New York’s rough and tumble Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. The record also fulfills a deathbed promise Smith made to her late brother, Junior, that she’d keep on singing no matter what.
“He told me, ‘I want you to sing; don’t give up,’” remembers Smith, who wears yellow onstage to honor his memory. “It’s all for Junior, now.”
In a premiere and feature, Billboard's Elias Leight writes, "A rugged, chugging southern soul record... Like Betty Davis or Betty Wright before her, she's imbues tracks with shingly, sawtoothed texture, capable of breaking off a high note with a throaty cry or scraping so low and wide that she threatens to put her bass player out of work." ...Find more about this CD and the artist

Bessie and Nina Take The Stage
|
By Gary Tischler/The Georgetowner
Washington theatergoers are enjoying the serendipitous opportunity this fall of seeing and experiencing productions about Bessie Smith and Nina Simone, two of the most compelling figures in the annals of female blues and jazz performers.
At the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE, Mosaic Theater Company has already begun its third season under its founding artistic director, Ari Roth, with “The Devil’s Music: The Life & Blues of Bessie Smith” by Angelo Parra. The show runs through Sept. 24 in the Theresa and Jane Lang Theatre, with the multi-talented and multitasking Miche Braden in the title role.
Later this fall, from Nov. 10 to Dec. 24, Arena Stage, 1101 6th Street SW, will bring Christina Ham’s “Nina Simone: Four Women” to its Kreeger Theater. Harriett D. Foy stars in this exploration of Simone’s dynamic and often troubled life. Read entire article here...
