Delta Wires :: BORN IN OAKLAND
|
|
Seminal San Francisco Bay Area blues band, Delta Wires, newest release is Born in Oakland, on Mudslide Records. The album, recorded and mixed at Brickwall Sound in Concord, California, showcases 10 originals and unique covers of a wide assortment of blues styles.
Delta Wires is a powerful harmonica and horns seven-piece band dedicated to modern blues, while paying tribute to the blues origins of the Mississippi Delta. Their name was derived from the image of a band with modern, electric instrumentation, playing a style of music born in the Mississippi Delta. What began as a college project and anthology of blues music from the Mississippi Delta to the South Side of Chicago, inevitably evolved into a band which has become known for its originality, versatility and crisp, tight, exciting, sound. Delta Wires is comprised of Ernie Pinata (harmonica, lead vocals), Tom Gerrits (bass, background vocals), Richard Healy (guitar), Tony Huszar (drums, congas, tambourine), Gerry Jonutz (tenor, alto, baritone saxes), David Bowman (trombone) and John Christensen (trumpet). ...Find more about this CD and the artist

The Musical River of Memphis: Deep, Wide and United
|
Sept 30 “Take Me To The River” free concert - Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr, Houston, TX
By Bob Ruggiero/Houston Press Written by singer William Bell and keyboardist Booker T. Jones specifically for their Stax Records labelmate Albert King to record, “Born Under a Bad Sign” has certainly become a blues standard.
King’s original 1967 version of the creeping, doom-laden tune about a man who “if it wasn’t for bad luck, wouldn’t have no luck at all” is arguably the best rendition. But it was also a huge hit for blues-rockers Cream and been covered by a wide range of acts including Jimi Hendrix, Koko Taylor, Paul Butterfield, Buddy Guy, Rita Coolidge and…Homer Simpson?
That’s right, animated America’s most dysfunctional father cut his own version of the song on 1990’s The Simpsons Sing the Blues album. And Bell couldn’t have been prouder.
“I loved it! I was a big fan of The Simpsons, and I knew that’s when I really made it, when Homer did my song!" enthuses Bell, whose Zodiac sign is Cancer. “It was the ‘60s, so all of that [astrology] was in vogue, so I had an interest. I had part of the song and had to complete it, so Booker T. and I sat up all night and finished it. Albert recorded it the very next day.” … Read entire article and info on the concert and artists...

Toronto Film Review: Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars
|
By Dennis Harvey/Variety
“Clapton is God” graffiti began appearing — to the guitarist deity’s considerable annoyance — very early in his career, which now spans more than five decades. He certainly comes off as a fallible mortal in longtime friend Lili Fini Zanuck’s Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars, which tells the legendary British musician’s story via a wealth of archival footage and (mostly) latter-day voiceover commentary. The Showtime feature is slated for limited theatrical release early next year, prior to its Feb. 10 cable bow.
As absorbing as much of this material is, the lengthy feature does not feel definitive: It commits the typical music-doc sin of devoting nearly all its time to a celebrated first professional decade, then hastily skimming past all events since. Further, the limited attention paid to later years dwells entirely on already amply chronicled struggles with addiction and personal tragedy, basically ignoring any music made after 1972. Though it all, Clapton himself remains somewhat elusive, save when acting badly under the influence; he has never been one to wear emotions on his sleeve.
The first 90 minutes or so here are gold, however, even if fans might wish for more detail on the dizzying number of fabled bands Clapton formed and/or played with over a 10-year span. … Click here to read entire article
