2017 IBC Finalists Compilation :: INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE #33 CD
|
|
 Over the past thirty-three years, one of The Blues Foundation's key events, the International Blues Challenge, has blossomed into an industry-leading annual showcase of the best new talent the genre has to offer. What began in 1984 as a handful of acts displaying their talents today stands as the world's largest gathering of blues musicians. The IBC makes careers, forges relationships between artists and industry veterans, and unites blues fans in their love for the music.
The 14 tracks on this CD, the result of a partnership between The Blues Foundation and Frank Roszak Promotions, were drawn from this year's Solo/Duo division and Band division finalists. First Place Band winner Dawn Tyler Watson's gospel-infused "Shine On" kicks off the compilation in powerful fashion. "Let’s Hear Some Blues," by Johnny Fink & The Intrusion, is a down-and-dirty shuffle you can't help but sing along to. Randy McQuay's "Til I Get To Memphis" features white-hot slide guitar and an impassioned vocal, while Brody Buster’s One Man Band takes blues storytelling into the future on "2029." ISC Annual Stocking Stuffer Promotion Ends Jan 3

 In the spirit of the upcoming holidays, the International Songwriting Competition is re-opening submissions from December 18, 2017 to January 3, 2018 for its annual Stocking Stuffer promotion, and the fee is a discounted $25 per entry.
All entries will also be automatically entered into the overall 2017 ISC competition.
There is no limit to the number of songs you may enter, and all songs entered will be eligible to win the overall ISC prizes which include over $150,000 in cash, merchandise, and services. One overall winner will receive two free days of recording time at Dark Horse Institute.

Blind Raccoon & Nola Blue Showcase Lineup during the Jan 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis
|
 (Memphis, TN) - Blind Raccoon (the music marketing firm based in Memphis) and Nola Blue (record label, artist management/consulting service and certified social media marketing provider) are delighted to announce the line-up for their showcase taking place during the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN.
On January 17, 18-19, from noon to 5pm, 14 acts from NY, NJ, TX, TN, CA, DC, WA, OK and OR grace the stage of the Purple Haze Nightclub, downtown Memphis. The showcase artists are a smorgasbord of roots and blues talent playing the gamut of styles from blues/rock to acoustic blues with Americana, folk, soul, R&B in the mix for good measure. Four of the acts are participating in the 2018 IBC – Likho Duo (Long Island Blues Society), Kathy & The Kilowatts (Austin Blues Society), Patty Reese & Dave Chappell (DC Blues Society) and Joyride (Blues Society of Tulsa). Five of the artists’ albums have been submitted by their society for 2018 Best Self-Produced CD – Likho Duo, Antry, Kathy & The Kilowatts, Patty Reese and Stacy Jones Band.

21st Doheny Blues Festival May 19-20, 2018 New Location
|
(Dana Point, CA) – The 2018 Doheny Blues Festival, entering its 21st year, will occur on May 19 & 20, 2018. After 20 successful years of bringing the world’s finest Blues musicians to Orange County, we are also excited to announce our new venue, Dana Point’s Sea Terrace Park (Pacific Coast Highway & Niguel Road, Dana Point, CA 92629). The award-winning festival will be re-imagined at its new seaside home, with more intimate stage areas, elevated food and beverage offerings, and involvement from many local businesses in the Dana Point community. In November, the Doheny Blues Festival was notified by the State of California Parks Department that it would have to find a new venue, despite a 20-year track record of producing its world-class festival, which draws fans from around the world. Goodbye to a Living Fossil of The Blues

There's blues "the genre," and there's blues "the culture." Both can be fabulous, but each comes from a different place. With the latter, the music is simply the voice of a people, the voice of a time and place. In the early hours of November 29th, one of those voices was silenced. RIP.
Born in 1937 Mississippi, Robert "Bilbo" Walker grew up much like Charley Patton or Robert Johnson. Pretty darn close to it, anyway. The family lived in a tin top shack in the flat, alluvial plain we call the blues Delta. No electricity or running water. (And don't even think about phones, TV or internet.) An outhouse. Cotton fields, sharecropping and segregation. That was the world shared by those early generations of bluesmen. You had to make your own way. Or not.
Field work and family responsibilities meant that Robert received very little formal education and couldn't read or write. But that never — not for one minute — stopped him from pursuing his dreams.
