“Give us the teachings of His Majesty . . . Cuz we don’t want no devil philosophy . . .” are the words echoing around the world when listening to one of Reggae’s greatest singers Bob Marley. In his song “Stir It Up” he chants with repetition the quote aforementioned as an instruction to the listeners or a request to the powers that be. For years Rastafari women and men have been learning, chanting, disseminating, propagating, publishing and promoting what they call, “The Teachings of His Imperial Majesty.” Why? Because they believe that his teachings are for the betterment of humanity. This concept has manifested in Reggae music since Reggae’s genesis. What are the teachings? The teachings are the recorded utterances of H.I.M. Haile Sellassie I, King of Kings of Ethiopia, which are contained in speeches made over the years during his reign in Ethiopia. These utterances were certainly not available, to the extent it is today, to the early 20th century Rastafari community. But the teachings still found their way into the minds of Reggae singers such as Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh, Count Ossie, Ras Michael and more who coated their musical messages with the utterances of H.I.M.

“The Wise Mind of H.I.M. Emperor Haile Sellassie I” is a Frontline Books title that has been gaining worldwide recognition from the Rastafari community. Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie, the grandson of H.I.M. Haile Sellassie I. Three editions later, the fourth edition has come with new features. The fourth edition’s main text has been paginated for efficient cross-referencing, detailed study and reasoning. With a special editors note by Asheda Dwyer, two introductions by Ras Sekou S. Tafari and a foreword by H.I.H. Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie. This book is loaded with great quotes from His Majesty. Great quotes like the world famous United Nations speech that Bob Marley used as lyrics for the song entitled “War” featured on his “Rastaman Vibration (1976)” album. Or the “Members of a new race” quote that has been burning in the heart of young Reggae singer Chronixx who has been seen reciting this quote on tour at shows and in interviews. Most recently “The Wise Mind of H.I.M. Emperor Haile Sellassie I” has been mentioned on Chronixx’s new album “Chronology (2017)” in the song “Selassie Children.” In the second verse of the song Chronixx tells a story of a young girl who first encountered Rastafari in the Kingston streets of Jamaica and her mom was chastising her for having a Wise Mind book and a Chalice kutchie after invading her privacy and going through her bag behind her back. Chronixx eloquently put it best when he said, “Please mama don’t scrutinize. . . Just experience the powers of Rastafari. . .” If that’s not the truth then what is?
