Kim Wilson :: BLUES AND BOOGIE, VOL 1
Legendary singer/harmonica master Kim Wilson has gone back to the basics and old school Chicago blues for his exciting new CD, Blues and Boogie, Vol. 1, from Severn Records. Blues and Boogie, Vol. 1 was produced by Kim Wilson, with most tracks recorded and mixed by Nathan James at Sacred Cat Studios, Oceanside, California; except tracks 4 and 15 recorded by Big Jon at Big Tone Recording Studios, Hayward, California. “I want to tell all of the real blues fans out there what a labor of love this project has been,” Wilson writes in the album’s liner notes. “I’ve been recording many, many tracks for a couple of years now and time has just flown by! A couple of the greatest musicians that ever lived, Richard Innes and Barrelhouse Chuck, have passed away during the process of making this CD. One of their dreams was to see this stuff come out. ...Find more about this artist and release

Chris Daniels And The Kings :: BLUES WITH HORNS VOL 1
Inspired by the classic horn bands of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s Chris Daniels And The Kings (together with Freddi Gowdy) are celebrating their 33rd year by continuing their crusade to revive the formula with the release of the group’s 15th album, Blues With Horns Vol 1. The ten tracks include three new originals and seven reimagined covers of soul-drenched, horn-driven blues rock, featuring guest artists like Sonny Landreth, Subdudes keyboardist John Magnie, Hazel Miller (Big Head Todd & The Monsters), Clay Kirkland (Gary Morris, Robben Ford) and many more.Daniels drew inspiration from one of his heroes Lowell George of Little Feat to pen the loving ode to the home of the blues, “Sweet Memphis,” and infused the opening track with the magic of Landreth’s guitar a slinky Tulsa shuffle from drummer Randy Amen and of course hot horns jabs. He then trades verses with Freddi Gowdy as they sing the praises of age-old juke joints and downhome blues on the greasy groove of “Fried Food/Hard Liquor.” ...Find more about this artist and release

Gurdon native Jimmy Witherspoon witnessed and mastered the blues
Drew Wright/Gurdon Times
(GURDON, AR) - Clark County [Arkansas] was the birthplace of a man who witnessed and contributed to the 1940s blues movement. James “Jimmy” Witherspoon was born in Gurdon [Arkansas] in 1921, the son of Leonard and Eva Tatum Witherspoon. His father, who passed away early into Witherspoon’s childhood, was a brakeman for Missouri Pacific Railroad while his mother was a church pianist.A deeply religious woman, Eva ardently disapproved of blues music, which she found to be “dirty” and unrefined.
Nevertheless, Witherspoon’s love of blues continued through listening to radio and local jukeboxes. Both of his parents had been in the First Baptist Church’s choir and at the age of five, he also joined, further honing his ability with a dream of one day singing professionally. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, Witherspoon won a singing contest in Clark County around this same time.
He left for Los Angeles in the mid-1930s and found work as a drugstore dishwasher. During this period, the city’s Central Avenue was a haven for blues and jazz lovers, with several clubs populating the thoroughfare.
