Gaithersburg Receives MML Achievement Award for Festival
|
At its annual conference in Ocean City, Md., the Maryland Municipal League presented a 2018 LEAD Achievement Award in the Large City Category to the City of Gaithersburg. The award, which recognizes initiatives to address community challenges and enhance quality of life, singled out the Gaithersburg Book Festival for giving the City of Gaithersburg a national stage upon which to celebrate its commitment to diversity, equality, community, and a love for all things literary. “We appreciate MML’s recognition of events like the Gaithersburg Book Festival and the positive impact they can have on a community,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, who is also the Festival's founder. “While the day of the event is the pinnacle of our year-long efforts, what makes the Festival so special is that it is not just a one-day event but an ongoing commitment to literacy. Our Festival has inspired book clubs, classroom reading initiatives, book display contests, multicultural storytellings, book giveaways, and so much more. Gaithersburg has embraced the book, and the book has helped make Gaithersburg a center of the literary world.” The award was accepted by Mayor Ashman, accompanied by Council Vice President Ryan Spiegel and Council Members Neil Harris, Laurie-Anne Sayles and Mike Sesma, Legislative Affairs Manager Monica Marquina, and Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Michele Potter.
