DKI APCSS Director Pete Gumataotao greets Advanced Security Cooperation (ASC) 18-2 Fellows upon their arrival on the first day of the course. ASC 18-2 runs from Sept. 20 - Oct. 24. The five-week course is designed to provide mid-career and senior security practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific Region about this large, diverse and complex region, its many issues, and opportunities for cooperation. The course also seeks to enhance the capability of every participant-or Fellow-in the areas of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and decision-making undertaken in complex and culturally-diverse environments. The overall aim is to enable ASC Fellows to comprehend the Asia-Pacific Region’s most compelling security problems and to empower cooperative measures to address these.

Trust, partner-building, goals of Vietnam workshop
|
The Indo-Pacific is in the midst of an epochal change. The global economic shift to Asia, the surge of maritime competition and security issues, and China’s continued forward momentum in their One Belt, One Road initiative demand a sense of urgency in identifying like-minded partners and priority areas of security cooperation. To build shared understanding and trust in this changing environment, the DKI APCSS and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam co-hosted a workshop entitled, “Vietnam in a Changing Region: Looking Ahead to 2025” Sept. 5-7, in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. The workshop identified priority areas where the U.S. and like-minded partners could assist Vietnam to realize shared visions and goals. Click here for full article.

Associate Professor Elina Noor presented on, “New Technologies, international humanitarian law, and the future of warfare: Cyber” at the 13th Southeast and Northeast Asian Session on International Humanitarian Law in Bangkok on 23 August 2018. Assoc. Prof. Noor also participated in the Japan-ASEAN Media Forum in Bangkok held on 25-26 August 2018, where she provided a briefing on the “Indo-Pacific Region – Economy, Society, and Politics” from a Malaysian and Southeast Asian perspective; and an update on Malaysia’s strategic outlook following the country’s 14th general elections in May 2018.
