106 Fellows complete Advanced Security Cooperation course

Commander, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Adm. Phil Davidson visited DKI APCSS Oct. 16 to be the keynote speaker for ASC 18-2 Fellows. In his speech, he discussed regional challenges and how we can work together to overcome them.
DKI APCSS Alumni Bring Regional Perspective to Maritime Security Challenges


 
Security practitioners from Canada and across the Indo-Pacific gathered in Victoria, British Columbia Oct. 16-18, for the 8th iteration of the bi-annual Maritime Security Challenges conference. This event, co-hosted by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), the Naval League of Canada, and the DKI APCSS, brought together over 180 practitioners from 23 countries to explore issues ranging from building the future fleet, to building strategic resolve, and everything in between. Senior administration officials informally discuss the new U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy

 
 
 
Officials from the U.S. and key partners came together for a second workshop to discuss the Indo-Pacific strategy’s implementation plan from multiple perspectives, including defense, diplomacy, trade and economics.  Participants included senior officials from the Indo-Pacific region, as well as senior U.S. Defense, State, and National Security Council officials.
DKI APCSS leadership curriculum incorporated into ASEAN leaders programme

 
The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) delivered a course titled “Executive Crisis Leadership: Complexity, Strategy and Foresight” as part of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) executive programme. The AHA Centre Executive (ACE) Programme is designed to develop and enhance the capacity of future leaders in ASEAN to prepare, respond and recover from disasters. This crisis leadership course was specifically designed for the ACE Programme and was delivered by Dr. Deon Canyon and Dr. Benjamin Ryan, DKI APCSS Professors, Sept. 3-5, 2018, at the AHA Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia. Participants included representatives from Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the AHA Centre.

Associate Professor Elina Noor has a new article entitled “ASEAN Takes a Bold Cybersecurity Step” published this week by The Diplomat. In her article Noor states that the “regional grouping looks to produce meaningful deliverables for its upcoming summit in November, it will be challenged by parallel developments in a domain that is continually being stress-tested in many ways.”
 
DKI APCSS professor Dr. Mohan Malik has a new article entitled, “China and India: Maritime Maneuvers and Geopolitical Shifts in the Indo-Pacific” published in the latest edition of “Rising Powers Quarterly.”  This issue has the theme– “The “Indo-Pacific” – Regional Dynamics in the 21st Century’s New Geopolitical Center of Gravity.”
 
Faculty News
 DKI APCSS Associate Professor Dr. Benjamin J. Ryan recently spoke at the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security as part of their program called “MiDAS Executive Dialogue.”  His speech was on “Enhancing Regional Cooperation Through Military Involvement in HADR.”
