Brigitte Purdy :: STILL I RISE
|
|
“Still I Rise is an album that contains every possible ingredient needed to make a great record. Robust musical arrangements, well-crafted lyrics and, most of all, an artist capable of transferring her emotions from her singing voice straight to the listener, through a series of great songs and vocal performances of a very high quality. Just like a true Blues Angel is able to do.” - Giovanni "Gio"/Pilato Bluebird Reviews
“Brigitte Purdy a world-class lead vocalist of legendary potential” - Frank Simes/Musical Director for The Who, guitarist, producer, songwriter
Brigitte Purdy has felt that need to sing about her own inner feelings and emotions since she was a child. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Brigitte Purdy has soon expressed the great desire to become a singer, with a particular inclination to soul, blues and R&B. It didn't take too long for the American singer and songwriter, thanks to her pure and silky singing voice, to be noted and asked to perform on the same stage with artists like Walter Trout, Sugaray Rayford, Tim Bogart, Dionne Warwick, and Dolly Parton amongst others. ...Find more about this artist and release

Idea to make Pine Bluff a Blues Hot Spot taking off
|
By Richard Ledbetter/Special to The Commercial (PINE BLUFF, AR) - When it comes to aspirations for the future of downtown Pine Bluff’s Arts District, Jimmy “Catfish” Cunningham and Alderman Rev. Lloyd Holcomb Jr. are like a couple of kids on Christmas morning. And their excitement is catching.
Asked where the nickname “Catfish” comes from, Cunningham said, smiling, “Because I love it so much. The one most delectable thing on this earth is catfish. Nothing is better or finer. I grew up two blocks from the lake here in Pine Bluff, and fishing was our way of life.”
Cunningham is the founder of a new organization titled the “Delta Rhythm and Bayous Alliance.”
He explained the DRBA and their vision for a tourism triumvirate between Pine Bluff, Greeneville, Mississippi, and Clarksdale, Mississippi.
“We’re a non-profit working to develop a travel corridor to highlight the cultural and geographical distinctions in what has been designated by Arkansas and Mississippi as the ‘Delta Rhythm and Bayous Highway’ along U.S. 65 S. and 82,” he said. ...Find more about Pine Bluff's Arts District

Bessie's bold blues: Gala to honor late musician Dec 4
|
By Will Broaddus/Gloucester Times (BEVERLY, MA) There’ll be a hot time in the old town next Tuesday night [Dec 4], when Paula Cole leads a Bessie Smith tribute at The Cabot [286 Cabot St., Beverly, Massachusetts, 8pm].
Cole, a Grammy Award-winning Rockport native and current Beverly resident, has selected a lineup of top-notch talent to sing one song each by Smith, known as the “Empress of the Blues,” in a fundraiser for the vaudeville-era theater.
The evening will be hosted by Phillip Martin, a senior reporter for WGBH News, and Renee Graham, associate editor and columnist for The Boston Globe.
“I wanted to honor an artist who would have been alive at The Cabot’s opening, and realized Bessie Smith would have been 22 years old,” Cole said. Smith was the Beyonce — or, for an earlier generation, the Aretha Franklin — of her time and was hitting her stride when The Cabot was built in 1920. Born in Tennessee in 1894, Smith was signed to Columbia Records in 1923 and sold 800,000 copies of her first recording, “Down Hearted Blues.”
