Keith Stone :: KEITH STONE WITH RED GRAVY
|
|
For Keith Stone’s highly anticipated second release he teamed up with Red Gravy who are made up of three of the most well-respected musicians to call New Orleans home. “It started as a frontman with a band, but now we’re a band with a frontman”
This band delivers ten songs of original, tasteful blues, all run through the New Orleans cookbook of funk and R&B to create an exotic and spicy musical dish, but here in the Crescent City, it’s all home cookin’.
Keith Stone with Red Gravy come by the name the same way Keith’s Sicilian mama cooked up her beloved sauce: by carefully simmering New Orleans spices and spirit. The new album works the same way. Drawing from the sounds of the city that gave us Earl King, guitar Slim, Professor Longhair and Dr. John, the band pays homage to these pioneers of New Orleans Blues while carving out an identity all its own. Longtime friends Jimmy Carpenter and Brent Johnson dropped in to lend their talents and love for all things New Orleans. ...Find more about this artist and release

Billy Hector :: SOME DAY BABY
|
Billy Hector’s newest album is Some Day Baby. Whether Hector is teasing you with his sultry slide work, picking through Delta blues or flat-out cranking it up and crunching out electric blues-rock on his beloved vintage Fender Stratocaster, his music reflects the true soul and origins of the blues, always passionate, engaging and dedicated to making the audience move and sweat.
Having honed his chops and style through three decades of performances, Hector is critically recognized as one of the hottest and most interesting guitarists/songwriters on the original circuit and has even been called “a New Jersey state treasure” by music writers.
Billy Hector has served as touring guitarist for Hubert Sumlin and Joe Louis Walker. He has been named “Best Guitarist,” “Best Blues Band” and “Living Legend” at the Asbury Park Music Awards, is a two-time winner of the East Coast Rocker’s “Best Guitarist” award and has received the Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation’s “Lifetime Achievement” award.

Deanna Bogart spends week with Hopi music students
|
Stan Bindell / Navajo-Hopi Observer (POLACCA, AZ) - Deanna Bogart, internationally acclaimed blues musician, spent Dec 10-14 at Hopi High School working with music students culminating in a performance with the students in a coffee house setting in the school’s cafeteria.
About 200 students, staff and family members attended the musical event. The school supplied a free spaghetti dinner.
Bogart, who lives in California, called the visit magical because so many wonderful unexpected moments showed up. She said her work with the Hopi High music students traveled in different musical directions as it should be. “We all learn differently and have our own set of strengths and weaknesses. Embracing them gives us the key to grow and be better than the day before. It’s my joy to help guide them and watch them learn to soar,” she said. Bogart said she loved every minute of the coffee house.
“I teared up a few times,” she said.
Bogart said the highlight of working with the students was watching them and hearing where inspiration takes over.
“I was so proud of them…each with their own flavor,” she said. ...Read entire heartwarming article

Chinese Travelling Blues Troubadours
|
Kyle Mullin / The Beijinger Wang Zheng had always looked up to rugged blues troubadours, but it wasn't until 2016 that the musician actually felt like one himself. Along with his band Mojohand, who are slated to perform at Yue Space on Dec 29, he embarked on a bluesy odyssey across America in that included stops in renowned musical hubs like Chicago, New Orleans, and Memphis. Ahead of their upcoming gig, Zheng talks about the journey, how he connected to such a quintessentially American genre as a Chinese artist, and more.
How did you first discover and fall in love with the blues? When I was in highschool I came across this book about the blues by a Taiwanese guitarist. That’s the first time I read about the blues, and it got me interested. I still remember the author’s name, Guo Qi Jie, and I am still very grateful to have read his book. And then, later on, I discovered a bootleg tape by Robert Johnson. The rest, like they say, is history. ...Find more about Mojohand's revelations, road trip and future plans

Salt City Rock & Blues donates $5,000 to Animal Shelter
|
Ken Grabowski
Manistee News Advocate (MANISTEE, MI) - Giving something back to the Manistee County [Michigan] community is what the News Advocate Citizen of the Year has been about since its inception.
One group fitting that description very will is the Salt City Rock & Blues Committee, which has been organizing concerts in this area for the past five years. This year the group took an even bigger step when they organized the first ever LaborFest in Manistee over the Labor Day weekend, and it earned them honorable mention as the News Advocate Citizen of the Year.
The event — which featured music, food a parade and lots of good fun — was a success despite Labor Day rain showers. Funds from the event all went to the project the group is working toward to build a new amphitheater for the First Street Beach area.
Salt City Rock & Blues president Tom Volkema said that they came up with the concept of LaborFest because they wanted to do something to celebrate Manistee’s rich labor heritage.
