Manx Marriner Mainline :: HELL BOUND FOR HEAVEN
|
|
Manx Marriner Mainline Hell Bound for Heaven is the initial recording collaboration of two roots music award-winning giants: Harry Manx and Steve Marriner (of MonkeyJunk) known as Manx Marriner Mainline.
Produced by Harry Manx and Steve Marriner, Hell Bound for Heaven showcases the duo’s incredible talent and versatility throughout the album’s 10 tracks: Manx on vocals, slide guitar, banjo, and his trademark Mohan Veena; Marriner on vocals, electric, slide, baritone and 12-string guitars, harmonica, bass, Hammond organ and drums. Each contributed several songs to the disc’s repertoire, as well as covering some blues and gospel chestnuts, ranging from Charlie Patton (“Rattlesnake Blues”) and Reverend Gary Davis (“Death Don’t Have No Mercy”), to Roebuck “Pops” Staples (“Wish I Had Answered”) and the traditional (“This Little Light of Mine”).
Harry Manx and Steve Marriner share a musical chemistry that only comes from a span of many years, playing hundreds of shows and travelling countless miles on the road together.

Memphis ‘69: Hippies, Blues, & the Heat
|
By Alex Greene/Memphis Flyer "Memphis Birthday Blues Festival," read the banner at the band shell in Overton Park in a recent concert film. It could well be another event tied to the bicentennial, but the texture of the film footage gives the date away: This is from the city's sesquicentennial — 50 years ago.
Of course, the viewer already knows this, having begun the film with a journey up from the Mississippi Delta, cars whizzing by as WDIA announces that weekend's main event: the fourth annual Memphis Country Blues Festival. And from those first few moments, the film offers total immersion in the world of a half-century ago.
Watching Memphis '69, which screens at Crosstown Arts (1350 Concourse Avenue #280, Memphis, TN) on June 7th (the very date on which the festival was held), is a bit like gazing upon some freshly unearthed treasure, a moment eulogized in decades' worth of music history, captured in amber.

Mississippi Blues Trail Maker Honors Blues Historian William R. Ferris
|
(VICKSBURG, MS) - A Mississippi Blues Trail Marker was unveiled by Mississippi Blues Commission on Tuesday May 28 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to honor historian Dr. William R. Ferris. Ferris documented Mississippians through recordings, books, film and photography, and brought broader recognition to the blues and other folk expressions through his advocacy work in academia and at the National Endowment for the Humanities.
“From the time he was twelve, he followed his heart and over his lifetime has produced a priceless body of work that preserves and tells the stores of the people of the South and of the development of the Blues,” said longtime family friend Blake Teller, who spoke at the unveiling.
Ferris was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame for his book Blues from the Delta, called one of the "classics of blues literature.” Just recently Ferris received a GRAMMY Award for Best Historical Album for the Dust-to-Digital boxed set Voices of Mississippi: Artists and Musicians Documented by William Ferris, which features his recordings, photographs and films. ...Find more details, photos and links
