Atomic Road Kings :: CLEAN UP THE BLOOD
|
|
Clean Up The Blood mixes the soul, dynamics, and grit of traditional American roots and blues music with a nod at modern society and stories of modern living. The album was recorded live at Atkinson’s own Bigtone Studios using vintage gear and all-analog equipment from the 1940s and 1950s, creating an original sound born of 1950s gospel, blues, rock-n-roll and more.
The Atomic Road Kings is the project of two musical powerhouses; veteran Orange County harmonica man Eric “Jailhouse” Von Herzen, long-time side man for Walter Trout, Social Distortion, Kid Ramos, Junior Watson, and the 44s, among others; and the brilliant young multi-instrumentalist Big Jon Atkinson, also the back-up guitarist for Kim Wilson’s solo project.
Atkinson’s raw vocals and moody guitar and Von Herzen’s rich harmonica tones create the perfect vehicle for Atkinson’s word-wise lyrics. There is no roots band today that more masterfully builds on the tradition of classic American music, deeply authentic enough to thrill any purist, while musically sophisticated enough to please the most contemporary audiences. ...Find more about this artist and release

June means it’s time for the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic... like a family reunion
|
Nature Humphries/The Local Voice
(No MS) - The month of June conjures a swirl of senses in the Mississippi mind: scorching days and steaming nights, cold drops of condensation trickling down icy cans of beer or sweet, swollen watermelons, and the smell of smoke wafting from the grill. Put these things together, add a heavy helping of music and a mess of friends and fellowship, shake it all up, and you’ve got the beloved summer festival. Specifically, around these parts, June means it’s time for the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, one of the best blues festivals in the state if not the country.
The Picnic, which started in 2006, is also a nonprofit organization whose goal “is to enhance appreciation and educate the general public about the native art form of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues music through performance, preservation, and interpretation.”
Taking place June 28-29 about 15 miles north of Oxford at the corner of Highways 7 and 310, the Picnic will host a feast of blues musicians including a fat handful of Burnsides and Kimbroughs, local favorites Kudzu Kings, and The North Mississippi Allstars.

Delta Museum Exhibit Expansion Can Continue with Help
|
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - “As we continue to celebrate our 40th anniversary, I want to thank you for helping the Delta Blues Museum preserve, protect and perpetuate blues history and culture for these four decades,” says DBM Director Shelly Ritter. “It’s amazing how much we have grown from our humble beginnings in the Myrtle Hall Branch of the Carnegie Public Library, to an area in the main library branch and then, during our 20th anniversary, to the former Yazoo Mississippi Delta Freight Depot where we are currently located.
Speaking of expansion, our new exhibit installation is well underway: These permanent exhibits will highlight all aspects of blues history using Clarksdale as a compass. Beginning with the music’s origins in Africa through the “field hollers” and songs sung on Delta plantations, to the first recording of Muddy Waters and the Migration of people and the music, all leading to the future of the Blues with current Clarksdale artists like James “Super Chikan” Johnson, Anthony “Big A” Sherrod, and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, our exhibits will bring all of these stories to life through instruments and music, large-scale graphics, and engaging multimedia.
