Big Joe and the Dynaflows :: ROCKHOUSE PARTY
|
|
Big Joe and the Dynaflows’ Rockhouse Party features acclaimed blues singer/drummer Big Joe Maher. Released on both CD and vinyl formats, the colorful album cover graphics were designed by Big Joe’s good friend, Marty Baumann, who works for Disney-Pixar Films.
The album was produced by Big Joe and Kevin McKendree, who also contributed piano and organ on the sessions, which were recorded at McKendree’s Rockhouse Studio in Franklin, Tennessee (hence the album’s title). The rest of the players on Rockhouse Party included three-time Blues Music Award bassist “Mookie” Brill (who also sings lead vocals for the first time on record including the featured track here), plus the talented guitar tandem of Robert Frahm and Yates McKendree, Kevin’s then 16-year old son (who’s now a ripe old 17). Another teenage phenom, Erin Coburn, adds her tasty guitar licks on one song and backing vocals on three more. The tracks showcase both a number of original songs as well as several cool covers.
“Rockhouse Party represents my love of pure blues and R&B,” states Big Joe Maher. ...Find more about this artist and release

Hayward Russell City Blues Festival Celebrates 20 Years of Tradition July 13-14!
|
(HAYWARD, CA) - The Hayward Russell City Blues Festival is a celebration honoring the vibrant Blues tradition of the area. July 13-14 will mark the 20th annual and will be held once again at Hayward City Hall Plaza (77 B Street, Hayward, California).
Russell City always had a rich musical culture. The blues tradition grew from African Americans whose Southern roots influenced the music. Saturday nights clubs were filled with the sounds of the Blues and Sunday mornings the churches were filled with the sounds of Gospel.
Russell City is a landmark on the map of America’s contributions to world culture giving Hayward a unique musical leg reflecting the African-American experience. In 1999 the West Coast Blues Society began the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival as a joint venture with the City of Hayward, a celebration honoring the vibrant Blues tradition of the area. 2019 will be the 20th Year of the annual festival, making it one of the oldest continuous Blues festivals in the West. This 20th Anniversary Celebration line-up is absolutely amazing.

Wading into Muddy Waters: A Trip into 40s Delta with the “Coahoma” Podcast
|
By Michael Newsom/The Local Voice “… University of Mississippi Blues Scholar Takes a Trip into the Mississippi Delta of the 1940s with ‘Coahoma’ Podcast”
Field hollers, traditional African American church music and songs by a tractor driver who later became one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century are among the gems in the Coahoma Study of the Mississippi Delta in 1941-42. The study by folklorist Alan Lomax and a team from Fisk University in Nashville is the focus of “Coahoma,” a new podcast series by Scott Barretta, a University of Mississippi adjunct instructor of sociology.
Barretta takes a deeper look into the nearly 600 field recordings that introduced blues legend McKinley Morganfield, aka Muddy Waters, to the world, but also painted a vibrant picture of African American life in Clarksdale and Coahoma County in the 1940s.
“Today, the Coahoma Study is best known for the recordings of Muddy Waters,” Barretta said.” But its scope went beyond music to address issues such as religious practices, the transformative influence of pop culture, foodways, transportation, race relations, urbanization and economic conditions.
“In other words, it aimed to gain a full picture of the Delta’s African American community.” ...Find complete story
