Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith :: DROP THE HAMMER
|
|
Music is about chasing a feeling – happiness, excitement, anger, sadness. Blues is the most intense combination of music and feeling. The power and emotion of the music transcends time and can be felt by people of all ages and ethnicities – the sole reason why the blues will survive and thrive for generations to come.
The blues, like all elements of life, is meant to grow, change and progress while retaining its essence. Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith and the House Bumpers accomplish just this with their latest album, Drop the Hammer.
Kenny honored the blues legends he admired by laying down a few traditional tracks. Much of his playing was molded by the teaching of his late father, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, who was the drummer for Muddy Waters for over 18 years, and it was important to give this nod of respect. To know who you are and where you are going, one must always honor and acknowledge from where you came.
This album focuses on contemporary subject matter while using modern and innovative sounds. As much as Kenny loves and respects traditional blues, he was compelled to take his blues to a new realm and dimension.

Joanne Shaw Taylor :: WILD
|
British singer and guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor signed her first major label contract in 2018 with Sony Music on the recently re-launched Silvertone imprint. The global deal will be for three albums plus her two most recent albums, Wild (2016) and The Dirty Truth (2014), also moved over to Sony.
Upon their initial release, these last two albums received limited distribution in the USA. Joanne’s, Wild, gave her a first Top 20 album and garnered critical acclaim around the world. Recorded at Grand Victor Sound Studios in Nashville, Wild was produced by Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Aerosmith, Journey, Iron Maiden). She has a huge, well-established and loyal fan base in the UK and internationally, and is very much looking forward to sharing new music with them all.
Joanne Shaw Taylor is incredibly proud to be signing to Silvertone/Sony. “Over my career, I have worked with different labels, but when I got the chance to release the next albums through Sony and Silvertone in particular, I couldn’t say no,” she said in making the announcement.

Robert Finley testifies “Get It While You Can” on America's Got Talent
|
Robert Finley may be blind, but he was able to move America with his inspiring story and voice on this week’s America’s Got Talent. The 65-year-old, infectious, soulful singer brought down the house and had the entire room on its feet and the judges grinning from ear-to-ear as he performed one of his original songs, “Get It While You Can.”
Born and raised in Winnsboro, Louisiana to a sharecropper, Finley says they didn’t get to go to school but had to start picking cotton at an early age. Robert grew up singing in a church choir. At 11 years old, he took money his father gave him for new shoes and bought his first guitar. He then got hooked on blues, soul, and R&B. Music was his salvation. “Every chance I got I played my music,” he says.
He joined the Army in 1970 at age 19. He was trained as a helicopter technician and was assigned to an army base in Germany during the Vietnam War. He ended up transferring to the Army entertainment unit and performed around Europe as a much-needed bandleader entertaining the troops.

Rising Blues Star Kingfish on Buddy Guy, Nikki Sixx and His Broad Musical Tastes
|
By Michael Lello/Highway 81 Revisited Growing up in the blues Mecca of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram was surrounded by music from the start. But his introduction to the blues came from a surprising source.
“When I had first found out about B.B. King, I was watching a Sanford and Son episode he did a cameo on,” says Ingram. “I was really young, watching with my dad.”
A few short years later – Ingram is only 20 years old – and the guitarist and singer, who released his debut album in May, ” is being hailed as “the latest blues savior” by Rolling Stone, working with Buddy Guy, rubbing shoulders with Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and preparing to go on tour with indie band Vampire Weekend. He’ll be a headliner at Briggs Farm Blues Festival this Saturday July 13. He’ll also perform at the XPoNential Music Festival on July 26 in Camden, New Jersey.
“In my household, my dad, he was more like [listening to] soul blues stuff and like old-school rap,” he says. ...Read entire interview here
