Neal Engleman (right) will be head brewer at Bold Monk

The Bold Monk Brewing Company, the exciting new brewpub from the creators of Max Lager's and White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails, will be located off Chattahoochee Avenue in the northwest corner of Atlanta near breweries Steady Hand and Second Self. The opening date is just a few short weeks away. Co-owner John "J.R." Roberts has hired former Wrecking Bar brewer Neal Engleman to run Bold Monk's sparkling new brewhouse, and the facility will feature a downstairs brewery, main bar and dining area, library lounge and beer garden. Bold Monk also hosts the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting on Saturday, January 11, 2020.

Best End Brewing Company should be opening soon in the same Atlanta West End complex that also houses Monday Night Garage, Wild Heaven West End Brewery & Gardens and Hop City. The 17,500-square-feet Best End brewpub that contains a 20-barrel brewhouse and a three-barrel test system is the brainchild of brewer Tim Schiavone, chef Cory Burke and partner Rob Hayes. Timmy's beers should be out of this world.

Terrapin Beer Company ranks as the first Georgia brewer to purchase renewable power directly at the brewery. A partnership with Cherry Street Energy will allow solar collectors to be installed on the brewery's roof, as well as solar-panels in the parking area. "Every decision we make at the brewery has an effect," explains Dustin Watts, Terrapin president. "Be it the local waterways we pull from, the energy each shift consumes, the soil we help build through composting, or any of the resources we draw on to manufacture, we strive to keep our environmental impact to a minimum."

Creature Comforts The Tree That Owns Itself is a bourbon barrel-aged barleywine registering at 12.5% ABV. The potent brew offers a profile showcasing notes of dark fruits, rich UK malts, English hops and sublime barrel-aging for two years. The actual "Tree That Owns Itself" is a historic landmark in Athens, Georgia. "The tree's owner, desiring to protect it, deeded ownership of the tree and surrounding land to itself. In honor of this local legend, Creature Comforts brewed this barleywine," explains Creature's Emily Sabula.

Indio's Matt Williams

Check out Sugar Hill's new Indio Brewing where brewer Matt Williams creates a range of superbly drinkable beers. Indio's owner, Jonathan Martinez, started brewing in his kitchen and became fascinated by the process. "My wife encouraged me to 'go big,'" notes Martinez. "She really kicked me out of the kitchen and asked me to get my own brew space. Next thing I know, we're signing our lease in downtown Sugar Hill! My favorite thing about our microbrewery is that we constantly rotate our beer selection and provide the freshest beer every time."

Look for Monks Meadery's Abstinence in the Abbey Belgian-inspired mead made with coriander, grains of paradise, orange peel and a touch of hops. The Belgian yeast provides a spicy, fruity appeal, and the mead finishes dry and warming with 9% ABV.

If you like brownies with special herbal ingredients, check out SweetWater's new 420 Strain Chocolope Stout. This limited release is packed with Dutch chocolate notes and strain-specific terpenes and natural hemp flavors. Available for a short time in bottles, cans and draft.

- Six Affordable Bourbons: Blind Tasting Comments
The late beer writer Michael Jackson also loved whiskey, and the "Beer Hunter" was often quoted as saying, "Whiskey is the strongest, most powerful version of beer."

Owen Ogletree gathered together five beer judges and one experienced whiskey retailer/taster to sip six affordable bourbons and provide blind comments. Check out the RESULTS.

"Bourbon, whose name comes from an area known as 'Old Bourbon' in Kentucky, is a whiskey that's distilled from corn. For a whiskey to be considered bourbon, the grain mash must be at least 51 percent corn. On top of that, by law the mixture must be stored in charred oak containers and cannot contain any additives."  -- Huffpost.com

Wild Leap
ETA IPA

Wild Leap's new ETA IPA offers a medium body with fruity, hoppy notes and a somewhat dry finish. The beer's new hop blend creates a profile of grapefruit, pineapple and pine that goes well with the malty body and 7.5% ABV.

"As we continue to explore new hop combinations, we wanted to brew an IPA that was medium-balanced and could be enjoyed by a range of craft beer lovers," explains Chris Elliott, Wild Leap brewer.
