Pascal Bokar :: AMERICAN TRAILS
|
|
Through this new and exciting CD release entitled American Trails, guitarist/vocalist Pascal Bokar, Father of the “AfroBlueGrazz” sound, makes a resounding musical statement regarding the unique nature of the multi-cultural expressions and legacies of West African heritage and African American traditions through the Blues.
American Trails, the new blues-based CD by virtuoso guitarist/vocalist Pascal Bokar, connects the American musical traditions of the South with the original 4-string instrument from Mali West Africa, Ngoni or banjo and the West African balafon (ancestor of the xylophone) in a powerful rhythmic and multi-sonic, contemporary gumbo that one has yet to discover.
American Trails deepens Pascal Bokar’s exploration of the blues in his “AfroBlueGrazz” concept with an opening ear-popping version of blues great Otis Spann’s composition, “The Blues Don’t Like Nobody,” in a duet with vocalist Paula Harris and some blistering scat/guitar singing.
The first track of the album is followed by the sultry ballad, “I Wanna See You in My Dreams,” also featuring Paula Harris. The funky, grooving “I Can Tell,” introducing the West African balafon (ancestor of the xylophone) and the banjo, is a hard-pulsing number that is sure to get everybody dancing, reuniting the old sonic landscape of the American South in a contemporary blues and call and response format. ...Find more about this artist and release

Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera
|
(LOS ANGELES, CA) - The consummate soul man musician Chris Pierce and veteran writer/director Mark Malone (“Bullet-proof Heart,” “Hoods,” “The Last Ship,” “Dead Heat,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”) have combined their many talents) to create an original work for the stage, “Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera.” This tale is told in 21 songs, following the journey of a fictional street preacher, many years ago in the American Deep South. A story of love, sorrow, earthy humor, and finally, redemption, we accompany Reverend Tall Tree as he plies his trade (leading street revival meetings) in the dusty small towns of the lower Mississippi valley. And then one moonlit night on the road, his life changes -when the Reverend finds himself falling in love… with a fallen woman.
"Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera" is a high-energy evening of song played by an all-star quartet comprised of electric and acoustic guitar, harmonica, upright bass, and drums. In homage to tent revival healing crusades of the early-mid twentieth century, the audience is transformed into a singing, stomping, clapping and sometimes crying “congregation.”His next show will be on Nov 3rd at Molly Malone’s (575 South Fairfax Ave.), Los Angeles, CA. Tickets are $20. ...Find more details and see clips about Reverend Tall Tree's Blues Opera

Chicago harmonica master Billy Branch pays homage to the great Little Walter
|
By Howard Reich
Chicago blues harmonica master Billy Branch didn’t really want to record a tribute to a legend of his instrument, Little Walter.
But with last year’s 50th anniversary of Little Walter’s death and next year’s 90th anniversary of his birth, Branch’s wife, Rosa Enrico, persuaded him that attention must be paid.
“I started telling Billy, ‘This is something you need to do,’” recalls Enrico. “He was so hesitant because Walter is so revered. You can’t do Walter.”Meaning it’s impossible — and unworthy — merely to mimic the blues harp innovator. And yet it’s impossible to escape his influence.
“To be honest, at first I kind of pushed against it,” says Branch, who will celebrate the release of his new album, Roots and Branches: The Songs of Little Walter, Saturday night [Oct 19] at The Promontory [Chicago].
“There are so many Little Walter tribute albums — why do we need that? Then I said, ‘OK, I’ll try it.’”
The result is an eloquent recording spotlighting works written or recorded by Little Walter – but re-examined through Branch’s genre-expanding sensibility. This is a deeply personal album, each track a crisply envisioned response to Little Walter’s art from Branch and his band, The Sons of Blues.
