Vaneese Thomas :: DOWN YONDER
|
|
Soulsville scion Vaneese Thomas returns to her southern roots for an album of impeccably produced songs of tender mercy, tragic heartache, and joyous celebration. She once again gathered together a group of good friends and collaborators to record the basic tracks of Down Yonder at Peaceful Waters Studios in New York with her longtime partner Wayne Warnecke. Thomas recruited the late show rhythm section of Saturday Night Live drummer Shawn Pelton and former Dave Letterman Show bassist Will Lee to deliver the steady grooves, along with guitarist Al Orlo and Robbie Kondor on keys. She then returned to her hometown and called upon the talents of Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell and Reverend Charles Hodges, to put some Memphis grease on the tracks along with trumpeter Marc Franklin, co-founder of The Bo-Keys, arranging and recording the horn section that included band mate Kirk Smothers on baritone saxophone at the world-famous Royal Studios. Thomas’ big sister, the “Memphis Queen” Carla Thomas, lent her acclaimed voice to several tracks and special guest Kevin Bacon joined her for an inspiring duet.

Delbert McClinton :: TALL, DARK, & HANDSOME
|
“It's not a stretch to say that McClinton, at 78, is making the best music of his career" - Rolling Stone Country
Roots music visionary Delbert McClinton returns with a swaggering and swingin’ new album, Tall, Dark, & Handsome, via Hot Shot Records / Thirty Tigers. Featuring 14 new, original new songs - all written or co-written by Delbert - the album dives deep into the blues, Americana and beyond, bursting with horns, fiddle, accordion, blazing guitar work, back-up singers and McClinton’s charismatic rasp, proving Lyle Lovett’s claim that “if we could all sing like we want to, we’d all sound like Delbert McClinton.”
McClinton has three GRAMMY Awards, and his previous three albums have all reached # 1 or #2 on Billboard’s Blues chart. With over 60 years of recording and touring to his credit, McClinton is a true musical zelig: he toured with the Beatles, backed Bo Diddley and Howlin’ Wolf, helped to inspire The Blues Brothers, and performed everywhere from SNL to Austin City Limits (both multiple times) along the way. ...Find more about this artist and release

Blues Is Woman… from Ma Rainey to Bonnie Raitt
|
(HEALDSBURG, CA) - San Francisco blues and jazz musician, Pamela Rose’s upcoming Blues Is A Woman concert will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Raven Theater in Healdsburg, California.
Pamela has thrilled audiences locally and internationally for decades with her swinging, soulful style. With six recordings to her name, including the NPR featured “You Could Have It All," Rose has performed at clubs and jazz and blues festivals throughout the United States, Germany and Denmark. She was honored early this year with a Lifetime Achievement Award by BAJABA (Bay Area Jazz and Blues Artists), in recognition of this work. In addition, Rose appeared with renowned jazz guitarist Terrence Brewer at the Monterey Jazz Festival on September 28th, 2019.
Audience members will have the unique opportunity to see Blues is a Woman in a pared down impactful concert version. The concert features Rose and her ensemble – featuring saxophonist Kristen Strom, pianist Jennifer Jolly, guitarist Pat Wilder, bassist Ruth Davies and drummer Daria Johnson who sing and perform musical gems, spanning the decades from Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Etta James, Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. ...Find more about Blues Is A Woman

...Blues concert stirs up memories of Muddy Waters
|
By Len Lear/ Chestnut Hill Local (PHILADELPHIA, PA) - When I saw on Woodmere Art Museum’s website a while back that their “Friday Night Jazz” would feature a tribute to Blues pioneers Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walter, powerful feelings began bubbling up like rainwater.
When you grow up as a white boy in a big northern city, the Blues are, at most, a lilting, strangely affecting, unknown tongue that whispers to the heart. Like listening to a musical foreign language, you sometimes feel its mysterious beauty but do not understand all of the words.
I know, of course, that the Blues are all about bad crops, racism, poverty, no work, too much rain, broken romances, et al. But it wasn’t until I spent time in the Deep South while in the Air Force in the 1960s that I began to hear some of the nuances in the Blues’ powerful language.
There was something about the Mississippi Delta that spoke to me the first time I passed down the macadam from the rolling cliffside of Yazoo City, just a few months before three civil rights workers were tortured and murdered by the KKK in Philadelphia, Mississippi, for the “crime” of trying to register blacks to vote. It’s no wonder they sing the Blues in the Mississippi Delta.
