Blue Zones, Tribes, Sangha

"We are hardwired to connect with others, it's what gives purpose and meaning to our lives...."
"I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship."
~ Dr. Brené Brown, Scientist/Author
As a child in a Chinese-Canadian immigrant family, I saw my parents derive great sustenance and strength from their group of fellow emigrés from Taiwan. other families who had also left all they knew behind.
In my high school years, playing clarinet in junior and senior bands gave me an identity and a tribe. The trips and the music were important, but the belonging might have been even more important.
Later on, in New York City, the band of Asian-American actors gathering regularly to share stories, meals, and creativity were a family for one another over years and over decades. Many of our original families were far away, either in distance or in mind-space or heart-space.
Yogis also are a family. We tread a path less traveled.
More spiritual than material, but outside the footsteps of traditional religious cultures. So, we derive sustenance and strength from our connection through our diversity.
We seek to raise each other and to rise ourselves, to find purpose and meaning.
Dan Buettner's now famous studies of the "Blue Zones" - five spots in the world where communities thrive well into their 100's - reveal the single most common denominator is connection, factoring in such variables as diet, climate, and economy.
For quality as well as quantity of life, I wish you sustaining, enriching threads of connection, community, and family! Tribes! Sangha!

On October 20, in Riverside Park, their front lawn in effect, this lovely couple was joined in holy matrimony in the presence of dear friends and family from NY, MA and FL.
Their officiating interfaith minister was ~ moi! Am I overjoyed? Thrilled Yep!
Here's my own longtime bridegroom sheltering me on our wet & wild walk to the wedding tree chapel!
