Moonshine Society :: SWEET THING
The band Moonshine Society from Washington, D.C. delivers a 10-course meal of house rocking blues on their second album, Sweet Thing. Harmonica hound dog Jason Ricci is featured on the opening bump and grind blues track, “Sweet Thing, returning the favor given to him by band leader and lead vocalist Black Betty, who sang on Ricci’s Approved By Snakes. Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Poppen cuts a jagged surf-blues riff on the dancefloor number “Shake.” The 1953 blues standard from Ruth Brown, “Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean,” is transformed into a Bourbon street, second-line parade, featuring barrelhouse piano, a full horn section that features guest, Ron Holloway (Dizzy Gillespie, Susan Tedeschi, Gil Scott-Heron, Warren Haynes Band, Gov’t Mule), and blazing chops from drummer Rodney Dunton.

Black Betty demonstrates her prowess as both an accomplished vocalist and excellent songwriter on the powerful and luxuriously arranged ballad “Come On Home” that soars with sophisticated classic R&B style. Ricci returns on the rockin’ tribute to the late, great Johnny Winter “Southern Road,” joining Poppen on sizzling dual harmony leads and trading fiery solos. Betty then takes us to church and teaches us all a lesson in the bare necessities with the gospel fueled “Biscuits, Bacon And The Blues.” ...Find more about this artist and release

The Hey Nonny Winter Blues Summit Jan 31-Feb 2
Brassneck/Illinois Entertainer
(Arlington Heights, IL) - Winter has traditionally been a slow season for music festivals in Chicagoland while folks recover from their holiday hangovers. Other than the TNK Festival in Chicago, a sturdy and dependable showcase of emerging talent, there’s not been the equivalent in the suburbs.

The folks at Hey Nonny and Straight Arrow Productions are changing the indoor music festival landscape with the first annual Winter Blues Summit, which runs from January 31 through February 2 on four stages at both Hey Nonny and Metropolis in Arlington Heights [Illinois]. “Just about every Chicago blues great will be appearing at the Winter Blues Summit,” Hey Nonny co-owner Chip Brooks told IE. Straight Arrow Productions president Dave Katzman added: “Hey Nonny has become the go-to destination for true Chicago blues in the northwest suburbs, so this seemed like a natural fit.”

Headlining the event will be the on-stage reunion of Chicago blues legends Jimmy and Syl Johnson. The Johnson brothers were born and grew up in Holly Springs, Mississippi, but moved to Chicago in the 1950s, where they quickly became part of the exploding Chicago electric blues scene with pioneers Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Little Walter. ...Read entire story and find full lineup and links
CIBS 26th Winter Blues Fest Feb 14-15
(DES MOINES, IA) - The Central Iowa Blues Society (CIBS) is once again hosting the 26th Winter Blues Fest at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott, 700 Grand Ave, on Valentine’s Weekend, February 14-15, 2020. Tickets are $20 for Friday night only, $30 for Saturday only, and $45 for a weekend pass. Special room rates are available at the Marriott and Hyatt Hotels in Downtown Des Moines.
If you've never been, this is the year to go. The festival takes over the entire downtown Marriott with 5 stages of blues music from national touring artists across all sub-categories of the genre including Swing Blues, Rockin’ Blues, Rockabilly, traditional, Rhythm and Blues, Soul and Alternative. There is a little something for every taste in music. There simply isn't a music festival experience in Des Moines comparable to the Winter Blues Festival. It's unique, it's fun and a great way to spend a cold winter weekend in Des Moines, especially if you're looking to do something a little different on Valentine's Day weekend.

Friday’s lineup includes: Davy Knowles (Rockin’ Blues) - Isle of Man (UK)
Paul Nelson Band (Rockin’ Blues) - NYC, NY
Tennessee Redemption featuring Brandon Santini and Jeff Jensen...  ...Find full weekend lineup and links
