Here's some thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
|
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.
A reader shared this:
"The last live blues show I saw was in Salida, Colorado on February 28th. The show was at The Boathouse and the band was Blues Recluse.
I’ll feel comfortable when people stop dying. I miss live shows and festivals. I miss my friends!" - Imelda Hill
We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended any shows and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowded, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?
Email me 100 words MAX with "VENUES OPENING" in subject line. Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.
Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

Johnny & The Mongrels "Louisiana Girl"
|
Johnny & The Mongrels are a high-powered, New-Orleans-influenced band that has been described as “the perfect combination of a funk-filled heart and a deep Bayou soul.” Its founders, currently based in Fort Collins, Colorado, are singer, songwriter Johnny Ryan and singer, bassist, songwriter Jeff Bostic. The band has played many prominent venues and music festivals nationwide, sharing stages along with way with Scott Sharrard, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Bob Malone (John Fogerty), Deanna Bogart, Shakedown Street, Samantha Fish, Honey Island Swamp Band and Bobby Messano (Steve Winwood).
“Louisiana Girl,” written by Ryan, Bostic and Sharrard, celebrates the Bayou state’s most alluring asset, with a saucy funk groove, soulful vocals and wailing tenor sax. “It’s a tribute to the women who make Louisiana the incomparable place that it is,” Ryan says. “There’s just something about the women in this state. They have a rhythm, locution and je ne sais quoi all their own.”

Blues Drive-In Show Aug 9 in Rockland’s Harbor Park
|
(ROCKLAND, ME) — Live blues music returns to Rockland on Sunday, Aug. 9, with a Blues Drive In, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at the public landing, 275 Main St./Harbor Park, Rockland, Maine.
North Atlantic Blues Festival co-producer/founder Paul Benjamin was approached by Rockland Harbormaster Matt Ripley about having some live music in the park, according to a news release.
“Ripley spoke with the City and the Harbor Committee, came up with a plan and “here it is,” Benjamin said.
The drive-in show will be performed by the Meg Williams Band. Nashville-based guitarist, songwriter and singer Williams represented Kentucky in last year’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis; and was house band director for the International Women in Blues Showcase during the IBCs. Her recent debut album is titled Take Me As I Am: The Muscle Shoals Sessions.
“But to make this work, there are some rules that must be followed,” said Benjamin. Everyone will need to stay in their vehicles, he said, although those who come in pickup trucks may be in the truck bed with a mask on. To keep social distancing, every other parking spot will be used; cars also will be parked on the grass.
The event is free to the public, but a $20 donation per carload if possible is requested to help pay for the cost of the show. The public landing will be open during this time, and anyone on site is asked to wear a mask.
Two more shows are tentatively scheduled, one on Sunday, Aug. 23, with Johnny Rawls; and one on Sunday, Sept. 6, with Tas Cru. “The second and third shows can only take place if everyone obeys all of the rules. So if you want live music, it is in your hands,” said Benjamin. …PenBayPilot story

Kivett Bednar :: "Beggin' Ya Please"
|
"Beggin' Ya Please" is the new single from Kivett Bednar. The song brings forth images of a cold, bright day at the coast. The first thing that strikes you is the sadness and urgency of the vocal performance. One comes away with the impression that they’ve witnessed genuine catharsis expressed as art.
Growing up in Austin, Kivett’s music tends toward roots and Americana. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Kivett embarked on a production career that would see him work with such Austin legends as The Hudsons and Guy Forsyth. More recently Kivett produced the albums Better Than I Was and Wrong Kind Of Love for Portland’s own Rae Gordon, who has been a staple at the Waterfront Blues Festival’s main stage for years. Kivett’s own band, The Pining Hearts, won Best Indie Band and Best Local Artist on Willamette Week’s Best of Portland list 2017.
“Beggin’ Ya Please” marks the first release of Kivett Bednar’s as an independent artist. And it is to be followed by a full album release scheduled for later this Fall. You can find more music by Kivett Bednar on Spotify and the Apple Music Store, or through his website.

Mark May Band :: DEEP DARK DEMON
|
Mark May Band releases Deep Dark Demon on Gulf Coast Records, featuring the single "Barbecue and Blues," celebrating the blues, brews and barbecue that is a common theme of music festivals and blues fans from all over the world. Mark’s last release, the highly acclaimed album Blues Heaven, hit #6 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart and remained there for 5 weeks.
To describe some artist’s music with one word would be easy but to do that with Mark May’s music would be impossible. But there’s one thing for sure, it’s all dripping with his rich love for the blues. His astonishing live shows featuring dynamic twin leads and dual harmony guitar work are the perfect complement to Mark’s smooth vocals. For over 20 years, Mark May has made a name for himself in the Texas blues scene and has been perfecting his craft performing at blues clubs, bars, and festivals.
The Mark May Band has performed at numerous festivals across the country including Telluride Blues and Brews, Mississippi Valley Blues Fest, King Biscuit, Tremblant International Blues Festival, Dallas International Guitar Show, Chenango Blues Festival, and many more. Mark May also had the opportunity to be the opening act for The Allman Brothers Band on their 1997/98 Amphitheater tour and went on to join up with ABB guitarist Dickey Betts and his band Great Southern for several tours and an album. He has also been featured in Blues Review, Guitar Player, Guitar World, Vintage Guitar, Tone Quest and other major publications. You can purchase Mark's new album at his website.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 16:
Tom The Suit Forst catches up with the legendary Mark Farner, vocalist of Grand Funk. Mark gives Tom some inside information about the recording of "I'm Your Captain," one of Tom's favorite blues-rock songs, which Grand Funk released in 1970. He fills Tom in about his work with Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp, and shares a personal message of unity, and the need for all Americans to come together as a nation.
"We are an American Family," he declares, with a nod to his classic rock song "We're an American Band."
Mark also tells Tom about his Go Fund Me, which he started with his wife, to help families across Michigan impacted by flooding over the past year. You can contribute to Mark Farner's Mid-Michigan Flood Relief here.
