Here's some thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.

Readers shared this:
DeeAnn from Kansas City writes, "We would love nothing more than to go to a blues festival! However, it's just crazy the joints that are opening in the midst of cases/death toll escalating like crazy.

I would love to see bands live stream on YouTube where we can offer tips/financial support. Scott Bradlee has had several of these sessions and we've really enjoyed them.
anybody?....anybody?"

Editor's note: DeeAnn, many bands are live streaming via Facebook for tips

Pat McDaniel, from Savannah, GA says, " I cannot wait to hear some live music, however, I don’t think it is safe yet. My husband and I will be ready when things get better."

See our Blues Society News section to read what another shared.

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended any shows and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowded, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?

Email me 100 words MAX with "VENUES OPENING" in subject line. Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

Photo Moments with the 18th Annual BFG Magazine!
Here's Stacy Groove Girl Norris, drummer of MudCity Blu who represented the Windy City Blues Society in the youth category at the last IBC in January 2020.

Stacy has been exposed and influenced by the unique heritage and continued evolution of the Chicago blues sound. She has participated in previous International Blues Challenges in the youth category in 2018, 2019, and most recently 2020. Stacy also takes part in the yearly "Hit Like A Girl" global contest which aims to highlight female drummers who have traditionally been underrepresented in the music industry.

This year, she received HLAG’s "Aspire" award and a scholarship to Berklee’s summer program.  Stacy is proud to be one of the few female blues drummers. When asked why she loves the blues, she says that she loves the stories the blues tells and tries to enhance the story with her play. She adds. "I want the younger generation to keep the blues alive... Blues is like history to me."

Eliza Neals :: BLACK CROW MOAN
Washed up on golden grotto beaches in times of rage, is Black Crow Moan. Eliza Neals lands squarely on blues-rock with the help of Joe Louis Walker (B.B. King, Blues HOF) and Derek St. Holmes (Ted Nugent). Soaring high above 10,000 feet below, Eliza Neals’ sultry feathers soothe the quarantined music-lovers soul.

A terrific landing crew of musicians including Mike Puwal (Kenny Wayne Shepard, ICP), Howard Glazer, Lenny Bradford (Bo Diddly), Jason Kott (Robert Randolph), John Abraham, Chuck Bartels (Sturgill Simpson) handle the guitars to fly by wire. Rolling the undercarriage straight is Skeeto Valdez (King Konga), Jeffrey 'Shakey' Folkes (Too Slim), Demarcus Sumter, John Mederios Jr, and Brian Clune on drums.

Adding extra lift on Hammond B3 is Bruce Bears (Duke Robillard) and Jim Alfredson (Janvia Magness.) Hitting the flight ceiling is Valerie Taylor (Eliza's sister) plus Kymberli Wright (Straight Ahead) on supersonic backing vocals.
Eliza Neals transforms from pain to glory, sheds her blindfold, grasps the key of songwriting and presents a gift called Black Crow Moan.

Taking flight on new wings, shaped by nonstop touring, festivals and recording, Eliza Neals is "the voice of the new blues."

Rentiesville Blues Fest in Cyberspace! 25 Bands in the House… at Your House Sept 4-6
(RENTIESVILLE, OK) - Well, this is a different year, as we all know. But since we all play the blues so we won't get the blues... the music is more important than ever. The Oklahoma Arts Council funds us a large part of the musicians' payroll so we are pleased to announce there will be a Rentiesville Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival number 30 - virtual Labor Day weekend, Sept 4-6, 2020. That means every one of you can check us out... slide shows, interviews, full sets of close to an hour from each band... from the comforts of your home.

Oklahoma blues legend D.C. Minner (inducted into 7 Halls of Fame in OK) began the Festival in 1991 after moving home with wife/bassist/singer Selby touring for 12 years. The pair met in Berkeley and brought a wealth of music with them. Looking for an excuse to pull fans and musician friends together to party at the old home place/juke joint turned blues venue the Festival seemed the perfect answer.

A showcase of regionals topped off with IBC and Award winning headliners ...this year Dusk til Dawn will present Johnny Rawls, Fillmore Slim, Watermelon Slim, Roger Hurricane Wilson, Danny Timmes (worked w Bonnie Raitt and Kristofferson), Tim Austin Mitchell, Clarence Carter Guitarist Kelvin 'Mr. Guitar' Drake, Sunset the Sunsetter, Poochie Love and Slick Willie family band the Right Cats, Selby , RocknRick Patterson, Harold Aldrich, Akeem Kemp, Ray Charles' and Little Richard's guitarist Tony Mathews, watch parties, Go to the website and click on the social media link of your choice... Now Open! Re-Experience the Delta Blues Museum during John Lee Hooker Month
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - The Delta Blues Museum was pleased to re-open Monday July 27. The museum will be maintained at a reduced capacity for your safety. Masks are required and social distancing, plus cleaning and disinfecting protocols will be in place. If you don’t have a mask, the museum has them for a nominal fee.

John Lee Hooker's birth is uncertain as he was born August 22nd, in either 1912 or 1917; and either in Tutwiler or Clarksdale. However, what is certain is that his distinctive style of boogie blues mixing elements from the Delta, North Mississippi Hill Country and talking blues - definitely rocked the house.

Hooker boogied until the end of his long career, recording dozens of albums and winning multiple awards - including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Two of John Lee's many classic songs, "Boogie Chillen" and "Boom Boom" are included in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll. "The Hook" items from the Museum's gift shop

Delta Blues, a 2-CD set produced exclusively for the Delta Blues Museum, is now also available from the Gift Shop. From tracks by legends (Muddy Waters, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Skip James, and Elmore James) to lesser known artists (Blind Roosevelt Graves, King Solomon Hill), this 48-track anthology delivers the deep blues. This limited-edition CD comes with a 40-page booklet. Stop by and purchase or order online.

Here is information about purchasing Museum tickets. Learn more about the museum's COVID-19 protocols. For more information about the Delta Blues Museum see the official website.
Grego MojoHand's Birthday Blowout
(AUSTIN, TX) - Blues musician and folk artist Grego Anderson has been sharing his blues for nearly two decades now. Recognized by the United States Congress in 2003 as one of two official visual artists for the Year of the Blues, he also appears in the Lightnin' Hopkins' documentary film, Where Lightnin' Strikes—the Lightnin’ Hopkins Story.

Grego shares some current news...
"It's my Birthday - and you get the gifts! I've taken 20% off the popular Mojohand "Blues is alright" signature tee until August 10th.

I also have some brand new Blues guitar tribute posters available - this time Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan... both limited editions while supplies last... more to come in this series.

Mojohand.com is my baby, and I am proud to be the biggest, little one-man Blues company on earth! I pack every order myself and drive them to the post office - I still answer every email, print every shirt, draw every picture and the rest.

There's no gigs for my band here in Austin, TX - Covid has seen to that, so I appreciate everyone that has helped me keep the lights on here as I live my Blues dream while I enter my 52nd year on this planet.

Thanks so much - be safe out there, and I hope to see you all at a festival sooner than later! Grego Anderson - Mojohand.com"
Blues Society News
The Villages Blues Society starts Florida Blues Musicians' Relief Fund and offer events with social distancing
In response to our query about Venues Opening we got this:

"We started a Florida Blues Musicians' Relief Fund to help the musicians financially. We have an event a couple of times a month at our sound guy's large outdoor yard that is shaded with 100's year old oak trees. We have had bands play from all over Florida. We challenge other blues societies from all over the world to start such a program too.

We suggest wearing masks will up walking around and social distancing in chairs, etc. We stay at less than 100 people as that is what the Sheriff's office has suggested. We hope to continue this as long as necessary."

Johnny & The Mongrels "Louisiana Girl"
Johnny & The Mongrels are a high-powered, New-Orleans-influenced band that has been described as “the perfect combination of a funk-filled heart and a deep Bayou soul.”  Its founders, currently based in Fort Collins, Colorado, are singer, songwriter Johnny Ryan and singer, bassist, songwriter Jeff Bostic. The band has played many prominent venues and music festivals nationwide, sharing stages along with way with Scott Sharrard, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Bob Malone (John Fogerty), Deanna Bogart, Shakedown Street, Samantha Fish, Honey Island Swamp Band and Bobby Messano (Steve Winwood).

“Louisiana Girl,” written by Ryan, Bostic and Sharrard, celebrates the Bayou state’s most alluring asset, with a saucy funk groove, soulful vocals and wailing tenor sax. “It’s a tribute to the women who make Louisiana the incomparable place that it is,” Ryan says. “There’s just something about the women in this state. They have a rhythm, locution and je ne sais quoi all their own.”

Chasing The Blues Podcast
Tom "The Suit" Forst Presents
SEASON 2 / EPISODE 17:
On this episode of Chasing the Blues Podcast The Suit catches up with "Los Angeles by way of Nashville" guitarist, singer-songwriter Bart Ryan, whose mix is contemporary take on old school blues. Bart discusses his new release, The Healer, coming this fall, as well as his work to raise awareness for ALS.

Bart Ryan is one of L.A.’s most gifted and powerful six string gunslingers. A native of Los Angeles, Bart has torn up nearly every stage in the city. His knack for roots, soul and blues is uncanny.

In 1994 he moved to Atlanta and owned the blues scene for 5 years there. Returning home to be closer with his family and make an album of personal yet stomping blues rock songs, Bart has also become one of L.A.’s most sought after side men. His prowess on electric, acoustic and lap steel guitars is equaled only by his good nature and his musical intelligence and sensitivity. His recent projects focus more and more on the craft of songwriting to compliment his guitar and voice.
