Here's some thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.

Here's response from a fan:
"I recently flew to Fargo, North Dakota for what seems like the only blues festival that was not cancelled. Few people wore masks, but it was outside, so that was fine with me. It was so healing to get to hear all of the bands live, particularly the Nick Moss Band, Anthony Gomes, Albert Castiglia, Johnny Rawls and Albert Cummings. They all seemed so happy to be playing again that they sounded even more amazing than usual. The blues is a healer, and this festival helped to heal me until hopefully another opportunity will arise." Anita Schlank

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended any shows and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowded, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?

Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

The week before that we featured "Lockdown," a super fun and poignant video with Elvin's Big Fun Trio and Kid Andersen. You best checkout our archives if you missed.

Elvin was an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of that group in 2015 and the Blues Hall of Fame in his own right in 2016.

Jim Gustin & Truth Jones :: LESSONS LEARNED
Fresh off their appearance at the 2020 international Blues Challenge semifinals, where they proudly represented their hometown of Santa Clarita, California, Jim Gustin and Truth Jones (Jeri Goldenhar) are set to release their third album, “Lessons Learned.” The eleven new tracks reflect the group’s diversity, talent and experience growing up in the melting pot of Southern California. The new album is a collection of driving blues, funky soul, sultry jazz and American rock ‘n’ roll that speaks to the tales of wild nights in bar rooms, Sunday mornings in church, times of heartbreak, and years of struggle and the wisdom received that fill the songs delivered by two powerful and emotive vocalists. Gustin and Jones are backed by the muscular rhythm section of bassist Scott Duncan and drummer Chuck Strong, along with versatile keyboardist Steve Alterman, and the dynamic saxophonist Lawrence Tamez.

Produced by Gustin, the band once again called on the legendary California music man, Terry Wilson, to co-engineer, mix and master the project, and invited several special guests to join in the sessions, including Tower of Power trumpeter Lee Thornburg, and Harp Attack man Chris LeRoi Hansen, guitar man Tommy Marsh (Crooked Eye Tommy), sax guru Jim Scimonetti, and Jones’ daughter Jill Hormon, who sang on a few tracks. The whole family gathered at Mystic Mountain Sound Studios and followed the directive inscribed on the band’s logo “Verum Quaero” - to seek truth.

The Genius of Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells’ Chicago Blues Band
In 1965, the Original Blues Brothers – harp maestro Junior Wells and livewire showman Buddy Guy – sidestepped broken amps and contract wrangles to bottle the sound of Chicago’s blues clubs on this classic album.

Less cats, more money

Up until the mid-1960s, the electric blues albums of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter et al that were released on Chicago’s Chess label and its Checker subsidiary were, for the most part, compilations of singles or live albums, aside from the occasional oddity such as Muddy Waters’ Folk Singer acoustic session. Hoodoo Man Blues was an entirely different animal.

Recorded over two sessions on 22-23 September 1965 for producer Bob Koester’s Delmark Records label, the record was the album debut for Memphis harp virtuoso Junior Wells, a Chicago mainstay who had replaced the imperious Little Walter in Muddy Waters’ band in the 50s (that’s his harmonica on "Mannish Boy"). It marked the first time a Chicago artist was given the creative freedom to pick their own band and record material free from the three-minute constraints of radio-friendly commercialism; it was also the first attempt to transplant the sound of the city’s South Side clubs to the superior acoustic environment of the recording studio.

Wells chose now-legendary bassist Jack Myers, jazz-schooled blues drummer Billy Warren and guitarist Buddy Guy for the session, a well-oiled line-up who knew each other and the material inside-out from playing Friday to Monday nights at local club, Theresa’s. When Guy asked Wells why there was no piano player, his reply was: “Less cats, more money. You in?” Because Koester mistakenly thought Guy was contractually obliged to Leonard Chess, the guitarist didn’t sing and was credited on early pressings as “Friendly Chap.”
