Mobile Inventors Lab ~ Free for North Country schools!

White Mountain Science Inc. (WMSI) has partnered with the Academy of Applied Science (AAS) to offer a new grant-funded Mobile Inventors Lab program for North Country schools this fall!
Project-based, hands-on STEM learning and mentorship opportunities are available for 3rd-8th grade Young Inventors and 9th-12th grade Youth Instructors. The program expands awareness of and engagement with STEM tools for 3rd-8th graders, and provides mentorship and career-skills development for 9th-12th graders.
Dates: Starting mid-to-late October, and running through the fall (highly flexible schedule!)
Cost: Free!
Are you a high school teacher or guidance counselor?
Do you have 9th-12th grade students in mind who might be interested in STEM or elementary education careers? Pass along the opportunity for them to be a Youth Instructor in our Mobile Inventors Lab! High school aged Youth Instructors will facilitate STEM curriculum for 3rd-8th graders via flexible sessions, designed with remote learning in mind. Mentorship and training will be provided for Youth Instructors by WMSI and AAS staff.

A regional partnership of school districts and area agencies serving northern New Hampshire has been working collaboratively over the past few years with a mission to support social and emotional well-being from birth to adulthood throughout the North Country.
This partnership, North Country Partnership for SEL Practices (NCP4SEL), has involved a wide cross-sector of stakeholders, including technical assistance from CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning).
NCP4SEL has created a free comprehensive guidance document to assist school districts and area agencies in implementing and supporting best practices in social and emotional learning.

Youth Only Public Commenting Session
Wednesday, October 7, 4 – 5 p.m.
Prepare a 1-3 minutes statement about your experience in school and what you think about public school funding in NH. No expertise required! All perspectives welcome!
Two Focus Groups for Young People Ages 14-21
who attend or have attended a NH Public School
Participants will view a short video to learn about school funding and have a conversation.
We hope for a representation of voices from across the state and ask only young people participate with our welcoming facilitators who will support the conversation.

Universal Design for Learning Opportunities for North Country Educators

There are three distinct opportunities for North Country Educators to engage with UDL this school year through CAST.
Free UDL Associate Level 1 Credential
- The UDL Associate - Level 1 Credential is free for all NH educators.
- Schools and educators can choose the path and timeline that works for them while acquiring the UDL Associate - Level 1 Credential.
- Self-study materials are freely available through CAST’s Learning Designed online platform.

North Country Virtual UDL Video Club
Join CAST for a unique opportunity to gain support throughout this uncertain school year. Together, we will analyze classroom video footage and design approaches for remote, hybrid, or face-to-face instruction using Universal Design for Learning (UDL)!
Cost? There is no cost to participate! Participating teachers will receive a small stipend.

New Hampshire Energy Education Program
|
The New Hampshire Energy Education Program (NHEEP) has developed new resources, for teachers and students, that are still interactive and NGSS-aligned, but can be adapted to fit virtual, hybrid, or in-class models. Teachers can connect with a NHEEP Energy Teaching Partner who can provide support, guidance, virtual presentations, and more for their classes. NHEEP also provides professional development, which they have adapted to a virtual platform. These resources are offered at no charge to teachers thanks to generous funders.

The Young Inventors’ Program is adaptable to any learning environment: classrooms, after-school programs, libraries, clubs, community programs, homeschools, and independent learners.
There are multiple options to help YIP leaders continue the program in classrooms, through remote learning, or a hybrid.

RESOURCES FOR TEACHING STEM FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS
This resource document is an evolving collection of online teaching tools and lessons on subjects like computer science, engineering, life science, physics and other STEM subjects.
A collaboration among UNH Leitzel Center; White Mountain Science, Inc.; the Cooperative Extension Science Literacy team; and the UNH STEM Education Learning community.

Participants will work through the self-paced eModules supported by 1-hour, bi-weekly group coaching calls with a facilitator from the NH Pyramid Model Master Cadre. Participants will be supported in reflecting and applying the strategies in the ePyramid Modules via a group coaching cohort with a maximum of 12 participants per cohort.
Infant Toddler Modules: Participants will meet via zoom on Thursdays from 6:00 – 7:00 pm on the following dates: October 8 & 22, November 5 & 19, December 3 & 17, 2020
Preschool Modules: Participants will meet via zoom on Saturdays from 9:00-10:00 am on the following dates: October 10 & 24, November 7 & 21, December 5 & 19, 2020
Birth – 5 Modules: Participants will meet via zoom on Fridays from 1:30-2:30 pm on the following dates: October 9 & 23, November 6 & 20, December 4 & 18, 2020

Preschool Pyramid Model Peer-to-Peer Practice-based Coaching
|
Practice-based Coaching (PBC) doesn't always require an expert coach! Reciprocal peer coaching involves peers coaching each other using the PBC model. This training will cover the process for PBC using reciprocal peer coaching. Participants will practice action planning, conducting focused observation, and reflection and feedback. This training includes all of the forms that peer coaches will need.
Dates: October 16 and 23 from 9:00 to 4:00 via Zoom

Youth Leadership Through Adventure
Adapt is offering socially distant YLTA retreats following each district's Covid guidelines this fall. The retreats will be Friday afternoon through Sunday and combine all of the elements of our summer leadership academies and conferences. Adapt will pick your group of 8-10 students and advisor up at your school and bring them to the basecamp in Campton, NH. From there, they will explore all the White Mountains have to offer including; canoeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking and more. Students will learn about the nationally recognized promising program Youth Leadership Through Adventure and develop an action plan to improve school climate and reduce substance abuse in their respective schools and communities.
Adapt is hosting two groups per weekend. There is currently no charge for this program for North Country schools. To register your group please contact Sean at seanobrienadapt@gmail.com or (603) 236-9227.

Wilderness Youth Leadership Development
Open to participants ages 11-17, WYLD is designed as an experiential education program and includes participation in activities such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, mountain biking, and wilderness survival skill building. School day and after school WYLD programming opportunities are currently available at no charge to North Country schools.

10 Tiny Self-Care Practices to Try Today
- Close your eyes and picture your favorite place for 2 minutes.
- Listen to your favorite podcast (or audiobook) while doing mundane chores.
- Create a little corner in your home that acts as your personal sanctuary. This is where you can go for a minute or two to take a slow, deep breath, and reconnect to yourself.
- Wake up 15 minutes before your kids do, sip your favorite hot beverage, and read something you love.
- Pen a 3-line poem about your favorite part of the day, or about a difficult part of your day.
- Go to bed one hour or 30 minutes earlier than you typically do.
- Recite a poem or prayer.
- Set a timer for 10 minutes, and journal your response to this question: How am I really doing?
- Try a yoga practice specifically created to help soothe anxiety.
- Ask yourself: What do I need to be well today?
