Established in 1979, Teddy's Juke Joint, a low-lit dancehall filled with memorabilia, serves food and features live music (plus Teddy spins tunes). The juke joint was once a little shotgun house were Teddy was born in 1946.

Georgia Comes Alive Saturday Dec 26
|
“Georgia Comes Alive” is a one-day virtual music festival to help get out the vote in the upcoming runoff elections by supporting local grassroots organizations Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda and CivicGeorgia. Coordinated by HeadCount, the event will feature 40 acts and be produced by the team behind Democracy Comes Alive, Quarantine Comes Alive, and Justice Comes Alive, which collectively raised close to $300,000 and garnered nearly 2 million views. GCA is also proud to partner with Participant, the producers of the new film John Lewis: Good Trouble.
“Georgia Comes Alive” will take place on Saturday, Dec 26 starting at 3PM ET and be hosted by SiriusXM’s Ari Fink. Donate any amount here to receive streaming links on the day of the show. Donations will benefit Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda and CivicGeorgia.
Americans turned out in record numbers to vote during the 2020 elections, largely thanks to the dedicated activism of grassroots organizations and the collective participation of historically underrepresented communities in battleground states like Georgia, where election officials are in the process of a presidential recount. The Georgia elections were so close that the state's two senatorial seats are being decided in a runoff election in January. While the Georgia runoffs will be decided by local voters, the results will have national implications, as the Senate majority hangs in the balance.

Gettin' In The Spirit with Lavay Smith And Chris Siebert...
SFJAZZ Center Premier Dec 17
|
By Andrew Gilbert
Mission Local
(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) - Lavay Smith and Chris Siebert moved to the Mission 20 years ago, and they've been making the neighborhood jump and jive ever since.
A bluesy jazz singer (or jazzy blues singer, depending on the song), Smith and her piano-playing partner-in-groove Siebert were a nationally touring act with her Red Hot Skillet Lickers in the pre-pandemic era. But they've always worked hard to cultivate a scene close to home.
These days, the scene emanates from their living room, the stage for their weekly Friday night livestream "Lavay Smith's Swingin' Cocktail Hour." Usually organized around a loose theme – episode 25 last week featured songs from their third album, Miss Smith To You! – they present the duo show via their Facebook page.“
The way we've organized it, it's not just who are favorite players and composers are," Smith said. "It's more what are these songs about? It's not just a night of Duke Ellington. We've done songs about smoking dope and drinking. We did a night of country soul, with country songs covered by R&B and soul singers, and not just Ray Charles. Brook Benton and Louis Armstrong both recorded Hank Williams' 'Cold Cold Heart.'"
In their first concert outside their apartment since mid-March, Smith and Siebert livestream Thursday [Dec 17, 7-8pm PST] from the SFJAZZ Center, joined by Red Hot Skillet Lickers trumpeter Mike Olmos. On Sunday [Dec 20, 6-7pm PST], there's an encore presentation with the musicians live-chatting along with the rebroadcast, which will be available on demand through Dec. 31.
With dozens of SFJAZZ performances to their credit over the past three decades, Smith and Siebert are almost a house act for organization, but they've never done a show quite like this. The concert offers SFJAZZ a chance at a trial run with new technology that allows the duo to perform in the (empty) 700-seat Miner Auditorium while Olmos accompanies them from the intimate confines of the 100-seat Joe Henderson Lab. …Read full story about the duo and music history around the SF Mission area

A Journey of reflection, hope, resolution and joy
|

This complete Kearney package of guitar, voice and emotion, shepherd’s listeners through the blues paces - eliciting reflection, hope, resolution and joy. Kerry’s latest Psychedelta exploration will melt your speakers and your heart, delivering you from the fog and confusion of our new normal.
Response to Tales From The Psychedelta “A killer slide player that has all the moves right in his heart and soul delivers loads of blistering soul on this extravaganza.” - Chris Spector, midwestrecord.com “For those who do not yet know Kerry Kearney or do not know what PSYCHEDELTA is, this is an exceptional and surprising opportunity.” - Eric Schuurmans, Rootstime.be
“I’m digging this album 110%. The album takes me through the Blues with a couple of heartfelt Delta Blues styles including slide along with Kerry Kearney’s rippin’ Blues Rock energy” - Groovy Hoovy, DJ - Blues Music Fan Radio
Kerry Kearney, a slide guitar master, plays and works his instrument to limits that amaze even the most seasoned musician or cultured music fan. The sounds Kerry creates from his vintage, stock and custom-made guitars are as unique as his songwriting and original melodies. Kerry was voted “Best Guitarist of 1999” by the Long Island Voice and “Bluesman of the Year 2004” by the Long Island Blues Society.

“Satisfying to my soul:” Phoenix blues community's support overwhelms Rhythm Room owner
|
By Ed Masely/Arizona Republic
Photo: Jeff Fasano
Bob Corritore doesn't like asking for help.
It's just that the Rhythm Room hasn't been able to make any money since closing its doors on March 16 in response to the global pandemic.
With no relief in sight from Congress and the state demanding that he catch up on his past due sales tax, the club owner realized he was running out of options.
"I was just at a point where I felt my back was up against the wall," he said. "And I had to do something."
On Saturday, Dec. 12, he launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $15,000 to help the Rhythm Room catch up on all the unpaid bills that had been stacking up these past nine months.
"I didn't see any other way out," he said. "And I thought $15,000 would probably get us enough to get by. It's a lot of money. But when you're running a club, it's not all that much, actually."
Within two days, that GoFundMe had already generated $30,000, leaving Corritore a bit overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.
"I'm going, 'Oh my god! How does this happen?!,'" he said.
"I've been so isolated now for nine months that I've lost touch with the community. Normally, I'm at the club, presenting music and just being part of the community. So it's just incredibly gratifying that the show of support and love has been so great."
It makes him feel like that community he's worked so hard at building is behind what he's been trying to accomplish at the Rhythm Room for nearly 30 years now.
"It's just satisfying to my soul to see the comments and the people who have gone out of their way to make donations," he said. …Read full story

Wichita's KMUW 89.1 Crossroads Program's Best of 2020
|
By Chris Heim/KMUW 89.1 Wichita Crossroads (WICHITA, KS) - It pretty much goes without saying that if Shemekia Copeland has an album out, it will be on Best of the Year lists, though credit too to Will Kimbrough who co-wrote most of the songs, played guitar, and produced her latest album. We also couldn’t stop playing the 2020 release from soul blues veteran Frank Bey.
There were lots of fine classic and Chicago blues releases in 2020, including sets from Alex Dixon (Willie’s grandson), John Primer & Bob Corritore, Kim Wilson, and, happily back again, Nora Jean Wallace (Brusco).
Another great soul singer, Sonny Green, got his first full album after a decades-long career, while Maceo Parker returned with his first new release, a set of fun and funky favorites, in eight years.
Local [KS] favorites Dustin Arbuckle & the Damnations, and Mike Finnigan (with the Phantom Blues Band) did the town proud with their 2020 releases, while Quad Cities favorites, and 2020 International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalists, the Avey Grouws Band showed great promise with their debut release.
Among the acoustic blues offerings of the year were fine sets from Rory Block and Blind Lemon Pledge (who we would include if only for the name). Peter Parcek continues to prove he is among the most inventive of the blues guitarists on the scene today.
Speaking of inventive guitarists, Cindy Cashdollar – who has worked with Asleep at the Wheel, Paul Butterfield, Bob Dylan, Sonny Landreth, Marcia Ball and scores more – released a star-studded set of her own, not strictly blues, but too good not to include.
The cigar box guitar and earth-shaking vocals of Gina Coleman made the Misty Blues Band release a stand out. Solid stuff too this year from veterans Robert Cray, Ronnie Earl, Sugar Ray, and Lloyd Jones. And Savoy Brown, around now for 55 years (!) just keeps on keepin’ on – no surprises, but it’s hard not to like their trademark British blues rock sound.

Thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
|
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some blues music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.
We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended or performed any live shows since the pandemic and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, attendance, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.
Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

Joseph "Mojo" Morganfield
In last Thursday's Dec 10th e-Guide we were excited to share the news of Joseph “Mojo” Morganfield releasing his new single on Delmark. Unbelievably, suddenly and very sadly, Joseph collapsed at home and passed way on that very day. Joseph was only 56 and the youngest son of Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield). We extend our deepest condolences to his family, which includes his wife Deborah of only 3 months. There was a public viewing Wed Dec 16 in Illinois. Funeral Services and Interment will be held privately on Thursday December 17, however, the services will be live streamed at 10 A.M. on Joseph’s website. A musical celebration is planned and will be announced soon. Here is a link to a loving Obituary booklet for Joseph.
