| BOP CHOPS! How To Improvise Over Rhythm Changes With Dmitri Matheny
|
Jazz Night School (Online)
Saturday, Mar 20
10 AM - 12 PM Pacific
Second only to The Blues, George Gershwin’s "I Got Rhythm" is the most popular song form in all of jazz.
The inspiration for countless compositions, this iconic chord progression offers the perfect laboratory for developing your skills as a soloist.
As the legendary Art Farmer famously said, “If you can play Rhythm Changes, you can play jazz!”
This workshop provides an overview of Gershwin’s original song, its most familiar contrafacts, and several modern adaptations, including the “Slow Boat To China” variant, Jimmy Heath’s “CTA” walk down, Thelonious Monk’s circle of fourths reharm, and more!
You’ll learn how to:
* negotiate the complexity of Rhythm Changes at a bright tempo * simplify the progression to major and minor key centers * outline each chord using tetra-scales, arpeggios and enclosures * employ tritone substitutions for greater lyricism * convey forward motion through guide tones and target notes * expand your color palette with pentatonic, whole tone, diminished, bebop, and altered scales, and explore advanced techniques of tonal gravity, linear harmony and deep listening
