Reyn Mann (Event Lead) continued facilitating non-standard security briefs as part of NAVFAC PAC’s Fiscal Year 21 senior leader training and development program. The attending members of the NAVFAC PAC gained a broader understanding of cybersecurity issues in the region from Dr. Inez Miyamoto, Dr. Bill Wieninger, and Maj Nate Hofferman. Maj. Michael Lakatos from the Canadian Armed Forces also joined the panel.  The final engagement in May will be focused on economic security. Panelists scheduled are Dr. Tim Buehrer, Cmdr. Dave McElyea, and Dr. Bill Wieninger. These engagements received overwhelming positive feedback and highlighted the center’s commitment to enabling strong relationship with Indo-Pacific units.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Education Series for Exercise Support (April 2, 9, 16).  Prof. Wade Turvold (Event Lead). DKI APCSS is supporting the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) by presenting a series of education opportunities for regional exercise participants. The educational series will consist of six engagements from March 26 to May 21, 2021. The instruction is focused on providing geopolitical background and awareness of the Indo-Pacific region with emphasis on Southeast Asia. Specific topics include regional geopolitical landscape, maritime security, Southeast Asia sub-regional challenges, the South China Sea, Myanmar, and cybersecurity. DKI APCSS will leverage its expertise in the region and its unique capability to provide quality executive education to contribute to this effort. USINDOPACOM conducts several large-scale exercises every year, and augments its staff for more robust exercise performance. Staff augmentees come from all branches of the U.S. military, including guard and reserve components, as well as civil service personnel. The education series will enable understanding of the regional strategic background and scope of regional challenges, all to better prepare exercise participants. DKI APCSS, with its mission partner USINDOPACOM, builds resilient capacity, shared understanding, and networked relationships among civilian and military practitioners and institutions to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. This education series will improve the outcomes of regional exercises.

ASC 18-1 Alumni Reunion (April 7).  Five Alumni participated in a virtual course reunion hosted by the DKI APCSS Alumni Division. As part of the FY21 alumni strategy, DKI APCSS held a bi-weekly course reunion that will follow a series until all long courses have the opportunity to connect with their classmates. Alumni are the credentials of DKI APCSS. By putting their DKI APCSS experience to positive, practical use, alumni contribute to national goals, as well as, to a free and open Indo-Pacific Region. DKI APCSS educates, connects and empowers alumni to achieve success and positive impact in the regional security environment. This virtual reunion provided a platform for alumni to reestablish connections with fellow classmates and inform on current challenges and achievements within their respective fields.

Cyber Governance Workshop (April 19-23). Dr. Inez Miyamoto (Event Lead) The DKI APCSS and the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC) conducted a workshop on cybersecurity. In May 2021, the GCMC will replicate the same workshop for participants from other regions, to include the Indo-Pacific. An active online seminar, participants took part in plenary sessions, small group activities, facilitated discussions, electives, and assignments. The workshop was designed around working sessions, including lectures and interactive discussions between faculty and seminar participants and provided participants a broad overview of cybersecurity, with the aim of providing leaders with information to take action to increase whole-of-society resilience. This workshop expanded existing international cyber capacity-building and partner engagement activities.
