A Blues Tradition Continues in 2022 at Gator By The Bay San Diego
|
By Wendy Lemlin For those who love their live blues music in a fun, welcoming festival environment, the annual four-day Gator By The Bay zydeco and blues festival is THE much anticipated must-do spring event. While the Covid pandemic postponed the usual May celebration again this year, Gator By The Bay is returning hotter than ever to San Diego, May 5-8, 2022.
Gator By The Bay was born 20 years ago, when a group of friends who shared a passion for the spicy Louisiana culture of music, dancing, food, and joie de vivre organized a two-day event to showcase these elements to the San Diego community. The festival has grown exponentially, and now draws over 15,000 attendees annually from around the globe, who gather to enjoy over 100 performances on seven stages throughout the four-day festival. Musical genres and performers represent Cajun and Zydeco from Louisiana, plus Blues, as well as Americana, Roots, Latin, Rockabilly, and Swing.
Blues headliners who’ve graced the festival include Tab Benoit, Elvin Bishop, Johnny Vernazza, Lazy Lester, James Harman, Janiva Magness, Deanna Bogart, Sonny Landreth, Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, Kid Andersen, Rick Estrin, Curtis Salgado, John Németh, Sugaray Rayford, Kenny Neal, Kid Ramos, Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials, Marcia Ball, Carolyn Wonderland, Earl Thomas, Mr. Sipp, Anson Funderburgh, B.B. & the Blues Shacks and many more. 2022 will include equally revered Blues legends.
Local Southern California blues bands have included Bill Magee, Nathan James, Michele Lundeen, Whitney Shay, Casey Hensley, Chickenbone Slim, Chris Fast, The 44s, Fuzzy Rankins, Chet Cannon, Lady Dottie & the Diamonds, Mercedes Moore, Robin Henkel, Sue Palmer, Tomcat Courtney, Len Rainey, “young guns” Chase Walker, Anthony Cullens, and Benji Davis and more.
The music will be back at Spanish Landing Park at Gator By The Bay 2022. Make sure you will be too! Mark your calendars for May 5-8, 2022!

The Big Blues Bender is honored and humbled to host Delbert’s final performance on U.S. soil.
After announcing his retirement in April, it pained us to remove Delbert's name from our 2021 Bender lineup. Not only for the sake of our fans, but for each of us on Team Bender as well. Delbert’s influence on our genre and in our lives has been substantial, and we had hoped for one last chance to tell him so face to face. Eager for one final chance to celebrate this music legend, the Big Blues Bender and Delbert McClinton agreed for his final U.S. performance to take place at Big Blues Bender 2021, as the most fitting way for him to say farewell to his beloved fans. The 2021 Big Blues Bender will mark the last opportunity ever to see the multiple GRAMMY-award winner perform in the U.S. This once-in-a-lifetime retirement celebration will occur on Thursday, September 9th at the Big Blues Bender, Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. No single-show tickets will be sold. This performance is only available to Big Blues Bender attendees. Packages are selling out fast, so if you wish to join in the celebration, book now at the Bender website!

Progressive Blues Movement Plants Roots in Sacramento Delta
|
By Chris Elliott Blind Lemon Peel is a Sacramento newcomer, but he has been at the forefront of progressive blues communities in major cities for more than 40 years. Peel’s particular approach, incorporating traditional blues styles into progressive blues adaptations, has been a decades-long evolution.
Progressive blues. Wait, what? The very phrase seems to have a tug-of-war going on inside of itself. It’s like “jumbo shrimp” or “the only choice.” There is an inherent contradiction to the notion of progressive blues because the blues holds simplicity and tradition in such sacred regard. There is probably no American music form whose purity is more fiercely protected by its listeners and practitioners than the blues. Any musician seeking to make a high-profile expansion of traditional blues will face hidebound doctrinaires eager to share their opinion on whether the experimentation has merit. And they’re usually going to say “no.”
Blind Lemon Peel seeks to do in Sacramento what he has done in the New York City blues scene and more recently in Los Angeles, and that is to present his catalog of original progressive blues material in an environment of impeccable musicianship and engaging vocal delivery. Throughout his performing career, Peel has attracted musicians associated with the blues who are comfortable pushing at the traditional boundaries that have long served as guideposts for the creation of new blues music.
In Los Angeles, his group’s musical director was L.A. blues star, Lucky Lloyd. Bobby “Hurricane” Spencer was his tenor player and, as Peel likes to say, “musical conscience.” Spencer is an absolute legend in L.A. blues, but he has a deep jazz education as well. Bobby’s outsized presence in L.A. is a second chapter, as his time in the Bay Area earned him a star on the Walk on Fame in his hometown of Oakland. ...Find full, intriguing story

Tia Carroll :: YOU GOTTA HAVE IT
|
|
Introducing Bay Area blues chanteuse, Tia Carroll and her long awaited album, You Gotta Have It.
Kicking off with help from retro-soul legend Charlie Hunter, is a passionate rendering of Anthony Hamilton's, "Ain't Nobody Worryin'." “Our Last Time” is a killer Jim Pugh tune that he and Robert Cray recorded during their years playing together and features a wild soaring Magic Sam-like groove from guitarist extraordinaire Kid Andersen. “Don’t Put Your Hands On Me” is an outstanding R&B romp written by the always witty Rick Estrin for one of Tia’s heroes, Koko Taylor. Tia’s inspirational message song, “Move On,” features our Brazilian blues friend, guitar star Igor Prado on stunning lead. Let’s all heed Tia’s advice as she declares, “I gotta message for y’all… get up when you fall and MOVE ON!”
Tia's voice and songs, so clearly captured here in her maiden Little Village release, will surely lead to new-found recognition and fans everywhere. YOU GOTTA HAVE IT!

Steve Strongman :: TIRED OF TALKIN’
|
Recorded in Hamilton, Ontario, and Nashville, Tired of Talkin’ is award-winning Canadian bluesman Steve Strongman’s 7th studio recording, and further establishes the guitar slinger’s reputation as one of the most exciting artists on the international blues scene. Strongman has been delighting audiences around the world with his take on the blues for decades, liberally applying swampy swagger and sweetness to shuffles, ballads, and four-on-the-floor chuggers alike.
Strongman joined forces with Canada’s Linus Entertainment in a multi-faceted deal that sees the Hamilton-based company globally representing his music publishing catalog and the distribution of his sound recording catalog, as well as future recordings and songwriting. This deal includes being signed to Stony Plain Records, and Tired of Talkin', has benefitted from a global reissue.
A skilled songwriter, guitarist and front man, his impressive resume includes stints opening for guitar legends B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Johnny Winter. The performer’s breakthrough 2012 release, A Natural Fact, was hailed as a standout, earning Maple Blues Awards for Recording, Songwriter, and Guitarist of the Year as well as a 2013 Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy) for Blues Recording of the Year.
Tired of Talkin’, available on both CD and vinyl formats, is chock-full of maximum blues, headlined by Strongman’s massive vocals and muscular guitar licks (he also plays acoustic guitar, dobro and harmonica), and backed by a band that includes Dave King - drums, backing vocals; Colin Lapsley - bass, backing vocals (Hamilton sessions); Jesse O'Brien - piano; Pat Sansone - keyboards, piano, acoustic guitar tracks (Nashville sessions); Audley Freed - electric guitar (Nashville sessions); James Haggerty - bass (Nashville sessions); with additional background vocals by Ella and Scarlett Strongman.

Just in Case:
May 30 is "National Creativity Day!"... unleash your imagination!! Many things in our lives have been spawned from someone’s imagination ...artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, filmmakers, chefs, landscapers, architects, and many more.
May 31 is not only Memorial Day in the USA, but it's also annual "World No Tobacco Day!" The World Health Organization (WHO) goal is to spread awareness about the risks of tobacco use and how we can help make the world tobacco free. Use "World No Tobacco Day" as a launching pad to a brighter and less smoky future, not only for your health, but the size of your wallets.
June 3 is "National Moonshine Day!" The term making moonshine was because those who made it usually had to work in the dark to help them hide from authorities. Moonlight was their only guide.
Ma Rainey even sang of her "Moonshine Blues" in 1924:
My head goes round and around, babe, since my baby left town
I don't know if the river's running up or down
But that one thing certain is, mama's going to leave town
You'll find me reeling and a-rocking, howling like a hound
Catch the first train that's running Southbound...
