Carolyn Wonderland retakes the spotlight after tenure with blues master John Mayall
|
Not just any player gets the call to be in John Mayall’s band.
Early members of legendary British artist’s group included musicians who went on to form Cream (Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce) and Fleetwood Mac (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Peter Green). And guitarist Mick Taylor did time with Mayall both before and after his 1970s tenure with the Rolling Stones.
So Austin guitarist Carolyn Wonderland knew it was no small honor when she got the call a few years ago. “John has this amazing finishing school that nobody ever wants to leave,” says Wonderland, who signed on to tour with Mayall in 2018 and also has done two records with him.
“Whenever we're playing somewhere, he's so happy to be there,” she adds. “You can see his inner child — it’s like, ‘This is what we're doing, and we're still getting away with it.’”
The 87-year-old Mayall announced in September that he’ll no longer tour — which, serendipitously, dovetails with Wonderland’s plans to ramp up her solo career again. Released last month, “Tempting Fate” is her 12th album but first for Alligator Records, a 50-year-old Chicago label with a catalog that includes albums by Albert Collins, Buddy Guy and many other blues greats.

Tiffany Pollack & Co. :: BAYOU LIBERTY
|
|
"Do It Yourself"
With the voice akin to mythical sirens that enchanted unsuspecting sailors, New Orleans’ chanteuse, Tiffany Pollack, will lure our hearts and souls with her Nola Blue solo debut, Bayou Liberty. The acclaimed singer songwriter weaves her way through the twelve original tunes skillfully stepping into the roles of blues belter, country balladeer, cabaret singer, jazz diva and soul sister, navigating a wide range of genres, styles, and emotional terrain with ease.
Joining Pollack on this quest are a wrecking crew of the finest players from New Orleans including Brandon Bunious on guitar, Stu Odom on bass, drummer Ian Pettillo, along with Christopher Johnson on saxophone and Eric Lewis adding pedal steel on two tracks. Pollack leads the ensemble with her ukulele on several tracks, setting the sound palette in a unique slant.
Pollack and Co. teamed up with fellow Nola Blue artist John Németh, tagging the BMA award winner to produce the album and lend his harmonica skills to the opening track. The project was recorded in less than a week by Adam Hill and Scott Bomar (Memphis-based musician, Emmy Award-winning film composer, Grammy-nominated music producer, and recording engineer) at Electraphonic Studios in Memphis, the source of many authentic albums. Recording to tape captured the heart and soul of Pollack and her bandmates in a pure and magical way. The 12-song set ends with the bayou rumba, “Do It Yourself,“ spelling out the manifesto that has guided Pollack through her storied career.
This enticing collection of southern music, and storytelling, Bayou Liberty, will shine a light on Tiffany Pollack and Co. as rising talents.
