Keeping The Blues Alive Awards Ceremony Jan 21, 2022
|
(MEMPHIS, TN) - The Blues Foundation will celebrate the Keeping the Blues Alive Award Recipients during IBC week at a ceremony and brunch, Friday, January 21, 2022 at 11am at the DoubleTree Hotel. The KBA Ceremony and Brunch is a ticketed event.
2022 KBA recipients are:
Big Blues Bender’s HART Party. The Big Blues Bender is a 4-day music festival held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada and a fundraiser that graciously supports the HART (Handy Artist Relief Trust) Fund.
Can’t Stop The Blues: “Can’t Stop the Blues” (CSTB), was founded by Karen Gottheimer in March of 2020. The CSTB virtual concert series, streamed on Facebook and YouTube, created a groundbreaking and desperately needed virtual space during the lockdown for the blues scene plus an artist revenue stream.
Tom Claypool: For the past three decades, Tom has chosen to donate his time and talents to music organizations, music events, and public radio in order to give back to the community that first inspired him.
FitzGerald’s Roadhouse: Since 1981, FitzGerald’s Roadhouse in Chicago has been a champion for all kinds of American roots music that has included a constant flow of top-notch blues artists.
Fueling Musicians Program: One of the most notable programs funded by Joe Bonamassa’s Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation is the Fueling Musicians initiative, designed to provide critically needed assistance to musicians whose income has been eliminated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jerry Mason: Jackson, Mississippi-based entrepreneur and promoter Jerry “Boogie” Mason built a network of traditional and new media connections via e-mail, print advertising, and social media, to promote blues, Southern soul, and other genres of music rooted in communities of color.
Phil Ranstrom: This American documentary filmmaker lives in Chicago, Illinois and has been writing, producing, and directing award-winning documentaries since the 1980s.
Raúl de la Rosa: Broadcaster, journalist, cultural promoter and curator of the blues since 1964, Rosa organized Mexico’s first blues festival in 1978 and produced eleven more between 1978 and 2012.
Jack Sullivan: For over 30 years Sullivan has achieved national and international success as a magazine publisher (Blues Music Magazine), festival promoter, and online music store marketer.

Handmade Copper Pipe Guitars and Scrap Iron Guitars
|
Here's an excerpt of an excerpt from Shane Speal's Book, Making Poor Man's Guitars. "Two of the most freakish guitars in the Cigar Box Guitar Museum are by Tone-A-Cane Copper Pipe Guitars and Pete Regan’s Metal Guitars. Both are crafted using metal for body and necks…
The Tone-A-Cane Guitar is the brainchild of Worcester, MA artist, Timothy Dlugasz and, with the exception of the wood fretboard, is made completely of copper pipes. In my Tone-A-Cane (an early version, serial # 03), the body is mostly non-existent, with small shrimp-fork wings to coming out the sides. More recent Tone-A-Canes have a Les Paul-ish body outline made from copper for better ergonomics.
…The neck consists of three copper pipes that run the length of the body. Two smaller pipes flank the sides while a thicker pipe goes up the middle. A wooden fretboard is glued to them and the headstock is formed from the two outside pipes joined with a few elbow connectors.
…Pete Regan Guitars look like modernist sculptures that should be hanging in an art gallery. Huntsville, AL based Regan uses hunks of scrap iron, rebars and welding joints to create super-heavy Mad Max guitar/weapons that have sustain for days.
The Pete Regan guitar in my collection is a 2-string slide instrument inspired by cigar box guitars. Regan started with a narrow rectangle body crafted from rebar and flat metal, adding disappearing circle “sound holes” and loading an EMG single coil. He added a bottom hunk of rebar to rest on your lap when sitting… The neck is simply two hunks of salvaged rebar with a nut also made of rebar."

Just in case:
January 3 is "Women Rock Day"... Honoring the many brilliant women who have contributed to the rock and blues rock genre and paved the way for future generations by breaking into male-dominated spaces. On this day, we pay tribute to the many female musicians who were pioneers in their own right.
Early women artists like Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Etta James, and Big Mama Thornton come to my mind, as does Janis Joplin.
Modern artists that fit the bill are Joanna Connor, Susan Tedeschi, Ana Popovic, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Eliza Neals and more of course...
