MLK Day Celebration features Blues Musician, Author and Lecturer Daryl Davis Jan 14 & Jan 16
|
(McLEAN, VA) - The McLean Community Center (MCC) has expanded its Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration over the weekend this year by offering two events featuring musician and race relations expert Daryl Davis.
The Daryl Davis Band will perform at 7 pm on Friday, January 14, in The Alden Theatre. On Sunday January 16 at 2pm, Davis will return to The Alden to speak on his experiences confronting Ku Klux Klansmen on their racist beliefs.
Davis is a boogie-woogie pianist who has played with the likes of B. B. King, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. On Friday, he and his band will kick off MCC’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with an evening of R&B and blues. This is the music that opened the door for Klansmen to befriend Davis, a Black man, and eventually, hang up their robes.
The McLean Community Center is located at 234 Ingleside Ave., in McLean, Virginia. Tickets to Friday’s concert are $30/$20 for MCC district residents. Tickets to Sunday’s event are $10/$5 for MCC district residents.

Roots Music Report's Top 200 Blues Albums of 2021
|
Roots Music Report is the number one independent music chart in the world. They compile radio airplay data from radio stations around the globe that play all forms of roots music, so that each week you can see which independent artists are being played the most and by what stations are playing them. They do not alter, accept payment for, or manipulate the airplay data to give special rankings on our charts. Stations reporting their play list is the only way for artist to appear on the Roots Music Report charts and they do not pick and choose which DJ's and stations may report.
Here's the Top 10 as a teaser of the Top Blues Albums of 2021:
1- 662 by Christone "Kingfish" Ingram (Alligator)
2- Damage Control by Curtis Salgado (Alligator)
3- Raisin' Cain by Chris Cain (Alligator)
4- Tommy Castro Presents a Bluesman Came to Town by Tommy Castro (Alligator)
5- You Ain’t Unlucky by Veronica Lewis (Blue Heart)
6- Holler if You Hear Me by Altered Five Blues Band (Blind Pig)
7- Little Black Flies by Eddie 9V (Ruf)
8- Tempting Fate by Carolyn Wonderland (Alligator)
9- Pinky's Blues by Sue Foley (Stony Plain)

Blues Foundation Important Update!

|
IBC & KBA Awards Luncheon Postponed for 2022
|
(MEMPHIS, TN) - The Blues Foundation Board of Directors has made the very difficult decision to postpone the 37th International Blues Challenge that was to take place January 18-22, 2022.
While this decision is coming at a late stage, it was not made lightly. As recently as mid-December, the COVID-19 pandemic and Omicron variant seemed under control, as vaccination rates were growing and large events were taking place successfully with safety protocols in place. The past couple of weeks, however, have shown a significant increase in positive cases not only in the US but globally. Memphis has seen its highest spike in positive cases this week since the inception of the pandemic.
After consulting with our IBC partners including hospitality vendors, event venues, and merchants; as well as with the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Department, similar organizations, and members of our blues community, the decision was made to postpone IBC until later in 2022. We recognize this will be a great disappointment to the challengers, affiliates, fans, and supporters, but we hope each of you understands our primary concern in making this decision is your safety and wellbeing.
The Blues Foundation is actively working with our IBC partners to determine a new event date, and we will share that news as soon as possible.
Details regarding ticket options will come in a follow-up email. Room reservations can be canceled or changed directly with your hotel.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding. We’ll see you back on Beale soon!
For questions or concerns, please contact The Blues Foundation’s Board Chair, Scott Fitzke via email.

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
|
• Jan 6 Feast of The Epiphany
• Jan 17 Martin Luther King Jr. Day
• Jan 26 Australia Day
Birthdays upcoming of note:
Jan 6-Kim Wilson (1951); Jan 8-Elvis Presley (1935), Tampa Red (1904), Bill Graham (1931 legendary Fillmore promoter); Jan 9-Barbara Carr (1941), Jimmy Page (1944); Jan 10-Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater (1935-2018), Sam Chatmon (1897-1983), Jerry Wexler (1914-2008 founder of Atlantic Records); Jan 11-Slim Harpo (1924-1970); Katie Webster (1936-1999), Michael "Hawkeye" Herman (1945); Jan 12- Ruth Brown (1928-2006), Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904-1972), Long John Baldry (1941-2005); Jan 13-David "Kid" Ramos (1959); Jan 14-Allen Toussaint (1938-2015), Clarence Carter (1936); Jan 15-Earl Hooker (1929-1970), Martin Luther King, Jr (1929-1968), Queen Ida (1929); Jan 16-Barbara Lynn (1942), Lester Davenport (1932-2009), Robert Wilkins (1896-1987)
Just in case:
January 10 is Peculiar People Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those who refuse to conform to the world’s idea of normal. It is always the people who are termed "peculiar" and "different," that set the world in motion because they live “out of the box.” They refuse to accept and live by the status quo and have the courage to do and be different.
Sounds like creative artists past and present!
