Media Power Youth's professional development workshops are interactive and discussion-based, with chances for you to collaborate with colleagues and explore the concepts we discuss in real-time. MPY workshops emphasize using media to create classroom connections and authentic learning opportunities.
Media Literacy for Safe and Healthy Choices v2.0
Date: Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 8:30 to 12:00 Location: NCES, Gorham, NH Recommended for 4th-5th grade educators
The foundational upper-elementary curriculum has been newly updated for 2021! This evidence-based educational resource contains lessons on how media and technology shape our habits and attitudes around health and wellness while engaging students in a hands-on health fair project. New topics include vaping, infographics, reality TV, and community advocacy. During this PD session, educators will explore the intersection of media literacy and health through discussions, media analysis, and hands-on examples of lesson activities. You will get to see sample lessons as well as examples of student responses to media-literacy activities. Upon completion of the workshop, all New Hampshire educators will receive a copy of the curriculum at no additional cost thanks to a grant from the NH Department of Justice. The registration fee is $10 and includes light refreshments. Please register by February 14th at: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/xhxysr/event/842819/ or mediapoweryouth.org/events.
Media Literacy Curricula for Middle School
Date: Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 1:00 to 4:30
Location: NCES, Gorham, NH Recommended for 5th-8th grade educators
In this workshop, we will explore the challenges that media has created for middle-school students as well as the opportunities that it ignites. We will also introduce educators to MPY's wide range of middle school instructional tools including Cyber Cipher: Decoding Social Networks and our project-based learning module, Digital Climate Change: Texting and Tweeting Your Way to a Better World. These tools address different aspects of media literacy to give educators a variety of options in order to best serve their students, whether they need an introduction to online safety and healthy communities, a deeper dive into the ways technology is integrated into our lives, or a hands-on project that develops empathy. MYP will also share experiences with implementing these tools in schools and ideas that educators and students have shared with them along the way. Upon completion of the workshop, all New Hampshire educators will receive a copy of the curriculum at no additional cost thanks to a grant from the NH Department of Justice. The registration fee is $10 and includes light refreshments. Please register by February 14th at: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/xhxysr/event/842818/ or at mediapoweryouth.org/events.
