Buddy Guy Teaches the Blues to the Next Generation in New Trailer for The Torch
|
Buddy Guy’s storied career and his work to share the blues with younger generations are highlighted in the new trailer for the upcoming documentary, The Torch, set to open in select theaters March 18.
The Torch, as director Jim Farrell tells Rolling Stone, was inspired by a pact that Guy made with one of his mentors and predecessors, Muddy Waters: “Last man standing, don’t let the blues die.” To that end, the film does dig into Guy’s biography, but it also showcases all the work he’s put in as a mentor to upstart guitarists like Quinn Sullivan and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, teaching them just as Waters and Howlin’ Wolf taught him.
“Our aim in The Torch was to showcase Buddy’s brilliance and collaborative generosity onstage, while also achieving a fly on the wall intimacy for those backstage moments where he shares his vast life experiences,” Farrell says. “Like Derek Trucks says, ‘I always look forward to getting just whatever time we can with him because you walk away and you feel like there’s been this amazing knowledge dropped on you.’ The Torch shows how both onstage and off, Buddy’s dedication to young talent is truly unprecedented.”

Marshall musical legacy was built by Black residents
|
Photo taken in Minglewood, TN in 1920 and is contained in the Special Collections Photograph Archives of the University of Louisville. It is thought to be typical of a barrelhouse piano of earlier times.
(MARSHALL, TX) - In 2010 Marshall city officials made official something that at least half of the Marshall community had known for a long time: Marshall is the birth place of Boogie Woogie music.
The linking of the legacy of the birth of the music to the small town of Marshall in East Texas was uncovered largely by researcher John Tennison, who worked with previous councilmember Gail Beil and others later on to come to find the truth of Marshall’s legacy.
A legacy which stems exclusively from the Black members of the Marshall and Harrison County community.
An article previously printed in the News Messenger, stemming from Tennison’s research, stated that historical researchers recognized the origin of Boogie Woogie music as coming from the East Texas area since the 1930’s, but until work done by Tennison could not further pinpoint its exact birth place.
Boogie Woogie is a style of blues music traditionally described as using a piano like a drum, or to make the piano sound like a drum or like a train. It is well known as a large influence to the current genres of Rock n’ Roll, gospel, country western music and more.
The credit for the creation of Boogie Woogie music is given exclusively to Black former slaves, who after finding freedom in the 1870’s brought their traditional drum-centric style of music to the new instruments that were previously unavailable to them.
The influence of the growing industrial railway system during the same time was an incredibly important influence as well to the Black musicians, who historians said worked to replicate the sounds of the trains through the piano music. …Continue reading full article by Jessica Harkert at Marshall News Messenger

February 11th is "National Guitar Day." Dang, this could get long mentioning personal faves and overall stalwarts and titans, but if you're reading this I'm sure names and riffs have already popped into your bluesy head! Revel in the fact that these talented folks have shared their passions with us... and I'm sure I don't speak for myself when I say the guitar is a definite part of our life fabric.
Guitars have been mentioned in history since the 13th century. The modern guitar began to take shape in the 1500s, and 6-string classical guitars appearing in the late 1800's. Gibson got the hint about electronics and set a course in 1834, and in 1931 an electrified version was created.
Checkout this article about who may have actually invented the electric guitar.
