|
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - A Note from Roger Stolle of Cathead:
This year's Clarksdale, Mississippi, Juke Joint Festival & Related Events are 'on' for Thurs-Sun, April 21-24, y'all — including our world-famous juke joint crawl on that Saturday night, April 23rd. The festival nonprofit has already sold PRE-SALE Wristbands to fans from at least 45 U.S. states (plus D.C.) and 10 countries! So, don't wait.
As you may remember, we sold out of Sat-night JJF Wristbands last year, so why risk a repeat? Save a few bucks, and guarantee a bracelet for your bluesy wrist. You'll rock out to the blues at 20-some venues, starting as early as 6pm that Saturday and running as late as 1am. Buy now as there are limited quantities. Price increases in April.
Of course, don't forget to get to town early and stay late that week for all of the amazing, official FREE music events that Thurs-Sun — including over a dozen FREE daytime music stages on that Saturday between 10am and 5 or 6pm. Lineup coming soon to website. Book your rooms ASAP! Find excellent lodging list here and start calling (not relying on 'online calendars') to find a room (or at least get on waiting lists). If you don't mind a short drive, then the Isle of Capri casino hotel in nearby Lula, MS, definitely has rooms. Also, check out these JJF camping options as well. And maybe search AirBnB and VRBO.

BMG acquires music interests of blues icon John Lee Hooker
|
BMG has acquired the music interests of iconic American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist John Lee Hooker from his estate.
The agreement includes his entire publishing catalogue, co-acquired with BMG’s longstanding partner FujiPacific Music. It also covers his entire recorded and performance royalty income, as well as a selection of Hooker’s recorded music catalogue, spanning Alone, Vol. 1 (1980) through to Black Night Is Falling (2020), acquired solely by BMG.
In what is a complex musical legacy some rights will still remain with third parties, but BMG will now take a lead role in promoting Hooker’s catalogue.
BMG currently represents or owns rights in many of Blues music’s most influential artists including Son House, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II and Mississippi Fred McDowell.
Jeff Jampol, CEO, JAM, Inc, said, “As the longtime managers of the John Lee Hooker estate, JAM, Inc was happy to help the estate and BMG conclude this transaction. We are very pleased that an artist-first company like BMG will be the stewards of this great legacy moving forward, and we are grateful to remain in a consulting and management role of the John Lee Hooker legacy, in partnership with BMG, moving forward.
“This is a rare triple-win for everyone: the Hooker family, BMG, and for the millions of John Lee Hooker fans all across the world. We can't wait to see - and be a part of - what's coming next!”
Thomas Scherer, BMG president, repertoire & marketing, New York and Los Angeles, said: “BMG is proud to be the definitive home of John Lee Hooker’s music, one of the key inspirations and foundation stones of popular music. BMG will ensure John Lee Hooker’s legacy is honored and respected wherever and whenever John Lee Hooker’s music is used, performed, recorded or sold.”

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
|
FEBRUARY
• Black History Month
• American Heart Month

Lenoir (1929-1967), Peg Leg Howell (1888-1966), Tommy Tucker (1933-1982)
Just in case:
February 18th is "National Drink Wine Day." Okay, well we know we don't need a special day to "drink" wine but let's think of it as a day to not only celebrate a human tradition that's thousands of years old.... AND, recall those songs inspired by this nectar. Early jump blues type songs include "Stick's" McGhee & His Buddies "Drinking Wine Spoodie Oodie" that hit the #1 spot in 1949, "Cherry Wine" by Esther Phillips (1953), "Pink Champagne" by Joe Liggins And His "Honeydrippers" (1953), "Hey Bartender" by Floyd Dixon (1955), the obscure "Wine Drinker" by Cats & The Fiddle (1950), ... many more over the years but we simply can't leave out Luther Allison's heart-wrenching plea of "Cherry Red Wine."
