Collagen? Vegetable broths vs Bone Broths

Our bodies can’t even digest collagen whole. We simply absorb the nutrients from our food which provides our bodies with the building blocks it needs to naturally create collagen, if and when it needs it.
Eating collagen does not equal having more collagen. As put in this article from TIME magazine, “Just as the dietary fat you swallow doesn’t directly translate to body fat, swallowing collagen doesn’t become collagen in or between your bones.”
In this article by NPR, they quote Kantha Shelke, a food scientist who says “Eating a diet rich in leafy green vegetables is ideal. Plants offer richer sources in collagen building blocks and, in addition, provide nutrients not found in sufficient quantities in meats or broth.”

Healing the stomach lining
And as for it being healing for the stomach lining, particularly from the gelatin, there are some great plant-based sources for that too. Particularly fermented foods.  Foods high in omega 3 like flax and chia seeds. Because Gelatin and animal collagen are full of Glyphosate, is the active ingredient in the pervasive herbicide Roundup®. Animal bones are found to have high amounts of lead and other heavy metals.

Lead is stored in animal bones and thus it was hypothesized that the lead concentration in bone broths would greatly exceed that of tap water. ... The tap water used to make the broths had 89 parts per billion of lead. The bone broth contained 700 parts per billion and the skin and cartilage broth contained 950 parts per billion.

A study was recently published in the journal Medical Hypotheses raising concerns of lead contamination in commercially-available bone broths. Lead toxicity in humans can cause reproductive and gastrointestinal problems, neuropathy, anemia, abdominal pain, memory impairment, and depression, and recent studies suggest that even small amounts of lead exposure can cause trouble.

Lead Contamination in Bone Broth video here

There are many other foods that have been shown to contribute towards healing the stomach lining and digestive tract, such as seaweed, aloe vera, healthy fats and turmeric.

Vitamins and minerals
Obviously, all the calcium, potassium and other minerals found in bone broth are more than easy to find in plant-based foods plus they contain much, much more goodness.
So the animal product-reliant parts are kind of useless… Or at the very least, unnecessary and over-hyped. It’s all in aid of making what our bodies already naturally produce and plant-sourced vitamins and minerals are the best option to actually help it do that.

A Plant-Based Option Works The Same (If Not Better)

So now we’ve established that the bones in this healing broth are not only unnecessary but also not as nutritious as plant-based sources, it seems pretty clear that using a bunch of wholesome plant-based ingredients is going to be WAY more healing. And way more appealing, too.
There is no  evidence of the healing benefits of slow-cooking or broth, in general. It doesn’t do much to enhance the nutrients but there is definitely something that feels healing when drinking broth. It’s warming, it’s comforting, it’s full of goodness and it tastes good.
The bottom line though is that we shouldn’t be relying on a broth to heal our gut! Because that’s silly. Also, many foods that help heal the gut need to be eaten raw (such as fermented foods and cabbage juice) so adding them to a broth is counter-productive.
But the aforementioned benefits are good enough reason to make it. Plus, it’s delicious and a great way to use up peelings, scraps and leftovers.
Vegan Bone Broth Alternative
This version contains lot’s of nutritional goodness that is great for overall health but particularly focuses on plenty of gut-healing properties. Feel free to switch up, leave out or add in any ingredients you like, to suit your diet and taste.

The main stars are:
  • Wakame seaweed: Great source of omega 3 – one of the best for vegans, great for intestinal health, full of vitamins and minerals (particularly good source of iron, calcium, magnesium and iodine). Not suitable for SCD diets, leave out as necessary.
  • Shiitake mushrooms: Gives the most amazing, comforting flavour. Full of vitamins and minerals (great source of vitamin D – especially if sun dried, zinc and B vitamins). Contains all essential amino acids. Prebiotic.
  •  Olive oil: Healthy fats with a good omega ratio that help absorb nutrients.
  • Turmeric: Powerful anti-inflammatory plus adds delicious flavour and a beautiful colour.
  • Spinach or kale: Full of vitamins and minerals (particularly high in Vitamins K, A and C, magnesium and calcium). Also a good source of protein and omega 3. Prebiotic.
  • Coconut aminos: Mainly used for flavour but also gives the benefit of it’s amino acids. May not be suitable for some diets as it’s considered a sugar, so leave out if necessary.
Dangers of Heavy Metals & How to Do a Heavy Metal Detox
What exactly are “heavy metals”? Heavy metals are elements that can be toxic and very dangerous even in low concentrations. Heavy metals that can lead to toxicity (or “poisoning”)
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • Arsenic
  • Cadmium
  • Aluminum
  • Nickel
  • Uranium
  • Thallium
  • Other definitions include manganese, iron, lithium, zinc and calcium (yes, under certain conditions very high levels of even essential minerals can become dangerous)
Heavy metal poisoning describes a number of health problems caused by exposure to environmental metals that accumulate inside the body. According to a report in Scientific World Journal, “Toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are ubiquitous, have no beneficial role in human homeostasis, and contribute to noncommunicable chronic disease.
Researchers have identified that significant exposure to at least 23 different environmental metals (called “heavy metals”) can contribute to acute or chronic toxicity. These metals are described as being heavy because they stick around in the body, especially hiding out in adipose tissue (fat cells). They are difficult to get rid of, making them similar to fat-soluble toxins. Body fat tries to protect the organs by trapping certain substances inside, including some metals, which causes them to linger. This is one reason weight loss can sometimes result in heavy metal detoxing, as fat cells shrink and release dormant toxins.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Heavy Metal Poisoning?
Some of the most common warning signs that you might be struggling with heavy metal toxicity include:

  • Auto immune Disease  including Lyme’s disease
  • Poor recovery from exercise and weakness
  • Skin irritation
    chronic Fatigue
  • Neurological disorders
  • Brain-fog, trouble concentrating, difficulty learning and poor memory
  • Depression, Manic Depression and/or anxiety
  • Dementia
  • Insomnia
  • Digestive issues, such as  IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Chronic aches and pains, such as those associated with fibromyalgia
  • Tremors
  • Impaired motor control, hearing, speech, vision and gait
  • Higher risk for heart attacks
  • Anemia

Heavy Metal Detox Symptoms + How to Deal with Them

When you begin to detoxify, certain symptoms can be expected as you body starts to acclimate. Before you wind up feeling better and seeing improvements in your health, you might actually feel worse at first for a brief period of time. This is a sign that your body is going through changes that might not feel very great, but ultimately they will leave you healthier once you get through them. Remember that your body heals itself, and in the process you might need to go through a transition phase that feels uncomfortable.
What are the side effects of detoxing? Potential heavy metal detox symptoms you might temporarily experience while you’re cleansing include:
  • Bloating and gas
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constipation or Diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • A skin rash
  • Changes in appetite
  • Low energy
  • Metallic or sour taste in the mouth
Some people find that if they jump into a detox too “aggressively” and quickly, they wind up dealing with significant side effects/symptoms. It’s advised that you detox slowly and gradually; start by making dietary changes and then beginning incorporating herbs, supplements and treatments over the course of at least several weeks or months.
Try to stick with the detox plan outline above and be patient — it will be worth it! To ease symptoms, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, eat a nutrient dense diet.  manage stress and only do moderate exercises until you gain more energy.
How long can you expect it to take for a heavy metal detox to begin working? It really depends on how high your levels are, the source(s) of exposure and the efforts you make to rid yourself of these metals.
Remember that heavy metal exposure slowly takes place over many years, so getting rid of them will not happen overnight. It might take months for even longer for you reverse the problem, but it’s important to stay on track since toxicity can have a negative life-long impact on your health.

Where Do Heavy Metals Come From?

Mercury Poisoning is one of the most common types of heavy metal poisoning. Almost every single person in the world has at least trace amounts of mercury in his or her body. Why? Some of the factors that can cause mercury poisoning (and other types of heavy metal toxicity) include:
  • Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as traffic fumes, air pollution, food contaminants, cigarette smoke or radiation.
  • Having metal amalgam dental fillings  (silver fillings slowly release mercury into the body).
  • Eating a poor-quality diet (for example, eating farm-raised fish that carry high levels of mercury). According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the most common way we’re exposed to mercury in the U.S. is by consuming  fish you should not eat that contains health-hazardous heavy metals, such as tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel and bigeye tuna.  BEST to Avoid all fish! A diet that includes  Processed Foods especially those that are imported from foreign countries and not organically grown (and even plant foods grown in soil that has high levels of metals) can also be a contributing factor.
  • Drinking water that is contaminated with trace amounts of metals (such as aluminum).
  • From birth (heavy metals can be passed down in utero from mother to her offspring).
  • Exposure or use of household substances that carry mercury, such as adhesives, air condition filters, cosmetics, fabric softeners, felt, floor waxes and polishes, and talcum powder.
  • Getting tattoos.
  • Cookware can release metals during cooking & heating .
  • Exposure to substances that carry lead, such as some chocolates, canned foods, toothpastes, old paints, insecticides, ceramic and some pottery, and soldered pipes.
  • Use or exposure to other household items, such as antiperspirants, baking powder, certain baby formulas, plastic toys, antacids, aluminum foil, certain metal pots and pans, stainless steel cutlery, coins, and some makeup.
  • Possibly receiving certain vaccinations.

Foods to eat while doing a heavy metal detox include:

  • Leafy green veggies — Greens are some of the most powerful heavy metal detox foods. Try to have some type of bitter greens each day, such as kale, swiss chard, dandelion greens, mustard greens, arugula, spinach or beet greens. Broccoli Sprouts are another great food for providing antioxidants and reducing inflammation.
  •  Herbs and spices — Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant herbs and spices like basil, parsley, oregano, rosemary, thyme, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cilantro can help remove heavy metals.   Cilantro (along with other green herbs and plants) is one of the best herbs for detoxifying and can help reduce the buildup of heavy metals like mercury and lead in the body. Try adding herbs like cilantro and parsley to fresh-squeezed green juices.
  •  Foods High in Vitamin C Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C can reduce the damage caused by heavy metal toxicity by acting as an antioxidant. High-vitamin C foods include citrus fruits like oranges or grapefruit, leafy greens like spinach and kale, all types of berries, broccoli and cruciferous veggies, kiwi, papaya, guava and bell pepper.
  • Garlic and onions – These vegetables contain sulfur which helps your liver detoxify itself of heavy metals like lead and arsenic.
  • Water – Drink 8 ounces of water or vegetable juice every two hours to stay hydrated and help flush out toxins.
  • Flax and chia seeds – These provide OMEGA 3 FATS and fiber that can help with detoxification of the colon and reduce inflammation.
  • Mushroom broth helps to keep you hydrated, provides important minerals, and supports liver health by providing glutathione. It also provides amino acids that help strengthen the organs.

Foods to avoid while detoxing include:

  • Farmed fish – Farmed fish, especially those from foreign countries where the quality is not monitored, can contain heavy metals, dioxins and PCB’s which are highly toxic. The worst offenders are tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel and bigeye tuna.  Best to Avoid Fish.
  • Food allergens – If your body is fighting against common allergens  and dealing with high levels of inflammation, it will not be able to detoxify from heavy metal poisoning as well.
  • Non-organic foods – These foods increase exposure to chemicals which make symptoms worse. Some of the worst offenders include conventional apple juice and brown rice products. For a list of other foods that you should always try to buy organic, see this list of DIRTY DOZEN detailing the most pesticide-contaminated produce as tested by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
  • Foods with additives – Additives may aggravate toxicity symptoms and decrease your body’s ability to detoxify.
  • Alcohol –Too much alcohol is toxic to the body and can make it more difficult for your liver to process other toxins.

Supplements to take that may help you overcome heavy metal poisoning include:

  • #1 PURE BODY ZEOLITE SPRAY by Touchstone essentials link here:
  •  Chlorella(1-4 grams per day, or about 4-8 caps daily) — Chlorella is a type of green algae that acts as a natural chelator to remove heavy metals, especially lead and mercury. It’s a great source of chlorophyll and is “hungry” to absorb other metals. You can take it in powder or tablet form.
  • Vitamin C (3000 milligrams daily) — Acts as an antioxidant to help reduce free radicals.
  • Cilantro (preferably taken as a tincture 2x per day)
  • Shilajit (between 100-500 milligrams daily, typically in powder form) — is an adaptogenic plant that has certain things in common with activated charcoal, especially that it contains a lot of carbon. It’s a natural chelator because it contains fulvic acid and humic acid that bind to toxic molecules. (10)
  • Milk Thisle (150 milligrams taken 2x daily, or milk thistle tea 1-3 times daily) — This is one of the most popular herbs for detoxifying the liver. Silybin is a component with the greatest degree of biological activity that has strong antioxidant properties. It may act as a toxin blockade agent by inhibiting binding of toxins to cell membrane receptors. Silymarin has been shown to reduce liver injury and is used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis and toxin-induced liver diseases.  (11)
  •  Probiotics (soil-based, 50 billion units one time daily) — Can help improve detoxification of the gut and help boost immunity.  ION by Zack Bush liquid supplement.
Treatment methods to use include:
  • Chelation Therapy Of all heavy metal detox products, chelation therapy is probably one of the most effective ways to reduce serious heavy metal exposure, especially metals like lead, mercury, aluminum and arsenic. Chelation therapy involves a chemical solution called EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), which is administered into the body, typically directly into the bloodstream via injection, so it can bind with excess minerals. EDTA chelation therapy helps to eliminate metals by binding salts to molecules. After EDTA attaches to heavy metals, together they both move to the kidneys where they are eliminated through urine. Most people need between 5–30 chelation sessions to see the best results. While it’s considered to be generally safe, side effects are possible. What are potential side effects of chelation therapy? These include burning at the injection site, vomiting, feeling dizzy, fever, headaches, nausea, low blood sugar symptoms and blood pressure changes.
  •  Activated charcoal is a treatment that works to eliminate metals and toxins via adsorption, or the chemical reaction where elements bind to a surface. The porous surface of activated charcoal has a negative electric charge that causes positive charged toxins and gas to bond with it. Charcoal is so powerful that it’s used as a emergency treatment for removing poisons from the body very fast. It’s full of carbon and can help discard heavy metals and other toxins. Look for activated charcoal made from coconut shells or identified wood species that have ultra-fine grains. Follow directions based on the specific type you use. Whenever you take activated charcoal, it’s imperative to drink 12–16 glasses of water per day.
  •  Bentonite Clays are used to absorb toxins because they act like a sponge or magnet for chemicals and metals inside the body.Due to its poly-cationic nature, bentonite clay leads to absorption of negative charge toxins. Most clays are meant for topical use only (they are not meant to be ingested). However, some high-quality, organic clays can be used internally, although you need to be very careful about doing this (contact the manufacturer to ask if it’s safe to consume the clay). Historically, many cultures ate clay to obtain minerals and help cleanse their bodies of parasites and other microbes. If you do want to use clay internally, mix 1/2 teaspoon with water, shake to combine and take once daily.
  • Triphala is a a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation made from the dried powder of three different fruits that contain the strong antioxidants called gallic acid, ellagic acid and chebulinic acid.Triphala has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-diarrheal abilities. Consuming triphala can help to cleanse the digestive tract, relieve constipation and produce regular bowel movements, which are important for removing metals, bacteria, and excess fatty acids from the body. It can be consumed in tea form, powder form, as liquid tincture or in capsule form. Take it on an empty stomach, ideally about two hours before bedtime.
  • Homemade Anti-Itch Cream — If you deal with skin irritation or itchiness either before or during your heavy metal detox, then apply anti-itch cream to help soothe the inflammation. This cream contains coconut oil and shea butter to boost hydration, essential oils to fight infection and help with healing, and ingredients like apple cider vinegar and bentonite clay to cleanse and detoxify the skin. Spread the cream over itchy skin irritations 2–3 times (avoid if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients).

What is a DETOX?
The objective of detox eating is to rid the body of impurities that accumulate over months, or even years, of unhealthy eating. Eating simple, healthy foods in the form of fresh vegetables and fruit, light cooked soups, tea's and an abundance of healthy pure water can give the digestive system a much-needed boost and possibly lead to better eating habits after the detox is completed. Come learn some delicious recipes to help you Detox and still feel satisfied.

A Detox program is nothing more than providing support for the body's natural cleansing functions
A healthy and responsible Detox program helps the body Detox naturally by:
1)       Resting the digestive organs through fasting or eating of whole foods in small amounts
2)       Improving circulation of the blood and lymph systems
3)       Stimulating the liver to filter toxins from the body
4)       Moving the bowels and cleansing the colon
5)       Nourishing the body with essential nutrients

Detox Tip #1 Understand Why a Detox Regimen is important:
With the lifestyle most of us lead on a day to day basis, we are surrounded by toxins. Eliminating these from our bodies is like a tune up.

Why do a Detox?
  1. It reduces the amount of chemicals that your body is actually absorbing through the food that you eat as well as those absorbed from the environment.
  2. It places a great deal of emphasis on the person to increase the amount of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that their body digests as well as increasing the amount of antioxidants as well.  All of which are suitable for helping in the detoxification process.
  3. A good detox diet plan is one that will ensure that the user eats plenty of foods that contain high levels of fiber and also ensures that they consume sufficient amounts of water as well.  It is through the use of these foods and drinking plenty of water that the body can easily and effectively remove unwanted toxins and waste from the body.
The main detoxification organs/pathways are the Kidneys, Liver, Colon and Lymph and the secondary detoxification pathways are the skin and lungs. Each is just as important as the other, all working in unison to keep the body healthy and toxin-free.
Kidneys: Filter the Blood and Make Urine
Liver: Process Toxins for Elimination via Bile
Colon: Separate Toxins from Nutrients and Pass Toxins on for Elimination
Skin: A Pathway for the Release of Internal Toxins
Lungs: Bring Oxygen to the Heart and Remove Toxins through Exhale
Lymph: Transports White Blood Cells for Immunity and Removes Toxins, Wastes and Pathogens for Elimination

Detox Tip #2 Figure out what’s right for YOU:  Different people are at different stages of bodily malfunction. Determine where you fit in, and find a detox plan that will work for you.

What Is Glyphosate and Why Is It So Dangerous?

Glyphosate: The Elephant in the Room

Glyphosate has been used as an herbicide to regulate plant growth. First registered for use in the U.S. in 1974, it’s now the most widely used in farms and gardens across the country and sold in more than 750 products.
Used in food crops, glyphosate can be found virtually everywhere in the food chain. And concerns over the link between glyphosate toxicity and cancer are on the rise.
The link to Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is particularly strong. One study asserts that exposure to glyphosate triples the risk of a subtype of the disease called small lymphocytic lymphoma. In another study, participants who used 5 or more of 9 pesticides tested were twice as likely to develop Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Glyphosate has also been associated with a host of other health issues, including liver damage, kidney disease, reproductive problems, and birth defects. And its damage to plants matters more than we think. Not only does glyphosate interfere with plants’ ability to absorb nutrients from soil, but it also acts as an antibiotic that kills certain good bacteria – critical to the health of both soil and our digestive system.
Needless to say, it’s time to play closer attention to what we eat.

Glyphosate Products to Avoid

As well as EWG, a handful of NGOs like Moms Across America, Food Democracy Now!, and The Detox Project have tested a variety of products for glyphosate. Based on their reports, here are just a few types of foods and examples of brands that have tested positive:
  • Granola by Quaker, KIND, Back to Nature, Nature Valley
  • Instant oats by Giant, Quaker, Umpqua, Market Pantry
  • Whole oats by Quaker, Bob’s Red Mill, Nature’s Path, Whole Foods
  • Cereal by Kashi, Kellogg’s, including Lucky Charms and Cheerios
  • Snack bars by Quaker, KIND, Nature Valley, Kellogg’s
  • Orange juice by Tropicana, Minute Maid, Signature Farms, Kirkland
  • Crackers, including Cheez-Its, Ritz, Triscuits, Goldfish
  • Cookies by Annie’s, Kashi, and Nabisco (Oreos)
  • Chips by Stacy’s, Lay’s, Doritos, Fritos
Glyphosate has also been found in miscellaneous products like Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, non-organic cotton products like tampons and clothing, and even drinking water. It’s been found in 75% of air and rain samples. According to a 2017 study, it’s regularly found in human urine.
Perhaps most discouraging are new findings on glyphosate in organic foods. Although decades’ worth of evidence supports the idea that organic foods contain lower (or trace) levels of pesticide as compared to conventional foods, the latest tests show the levels are virtually the same.

How Do You Avoid (or Treat) Glyphosate Exposure?

Glyphosate contamination is rampant because, when airborne, the chemical is able to travel far. But it does not pass easily through the skin. The real concern is exposure through the eyes, nose, or mouth. We can’t do much about what’s in the air, but we can control ingestion.
To avoid glyphosate poisoning, here are some of the things you can do:
  1. Look for labels. The Detox Project, which uses an FDA-registered food testing lab to test for toxic chemicals, recently launched a “Glyphosate Residue Free” label that companies can apply for to certify their products. Until it rolls out more widely, you are more likely (but not guaranteed) to avoid exposure by opting for foods labeled “Certified Organic.”
  2. Grow your own. There are many health and environmental benefits to growing your own plants, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. If you don’t have time, source local produce from a farmer’s market you trust.
  3. Avoid using weed killer. When in doubt, avoid the use of weed killers that use the active ingredient glyphosate. If, however, you do encounter the substance, always wash your hands and/or body afterward. If you get any glyphosate on your skin or in your eyes, nose, or throat, follow the product’s First Aid instructions or call the poison Control center,
If you notice persistent symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or irritation in the mouth or throat, you need to see a doctor immediately. From there, you have the right to hold the pesticide manufacturer accountable for the harm.
Find a more comprehensive list of the products and brands that use glyphosate here or general information on glyphosate in the National Pesticide Information Center’s fact sheet.

Dark leafy green juices – Leafy greens (particularly DARK leafy greens) are loaded with vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and blood alkaliners for superior health and energy. These nutrients help with the awakening and releasing of crusty old gunk in your body (which weighs on your energy and your mood).

Spirulina – Spirulina is a tiny fresh water blue-green algae. It is considered a whole-food (not an extract), a superfood (thanks to its nutrient density) and a complete vegetarian source of protein.
