The Sully Band :: LET’S STRAIGHTEN IT OUT!
|
|
"...a simmering blast of vintage soul drenched in understated emotion on its way to the boiling point.” - Rock and Blues Muse
With Let’s Straighten It Out! (released via Belly Up / Blue Élan Records), Robert “Sully” Sullivan and his soul-infused nine-piece band take us on a journey through the ups and downs of love by way of ten classic ‘60s and ‘70s R&B tunes.
Produced by Grammy Award-winner Chris Goldsmith (Blind Boys of Alabama, Ben Harper, Charlie Musselwhite, Big Head Todd), Let’s Straighten It Out! is like a love letter written in album hits and deep cuts from icons who paved the way. Treasured tunes like Billy Preston’s “Nothing from Nothing” and Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher” share the track list with lesser-known nuggets like Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” and Shuggie Otis’ “Ice Cold Daydream.” Other treats include a New Orleans approach to Albert Collins’ “If You Love Me Like You Say,” which features young blues guitar phenom Anthony Cullins, and “When The Battle is Over,” a rollicking version of Dr. John’s tune that was also covered long-ago by Aretha Franklin, this time done as a duet with the amazing Rebecca Jade.
Anchored by Grammy Award-winning bass slayer, James East (Eric Clapton, Elton John, Michael Jackson, and others), The Sully Band is composed of seasoned, accomplished players from all corners of the globe. The horn section features sax-flute-harp-man Tripp Sprague (Kenny Loggins, The Little River Band, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, The Four Tops) and trumpet and flugelhorn player Steve Dillard (The Righteous Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd).
“...a tight crew with a soulful and unique front man and some high-end talent. [Let’s Straighten It Out!] is heartfelt homage and thoughtful interpretation and as such it is at times a thrilling new approach to Soul.” - Blues Blast Magazine

Music Maker Foundation’s “Freight Train Blues” Series
|
(CARRBORO, NC) - Music Maker Foundation’s eighth annual “Freight Train Blues” concert series returns, live and in-person May 13-June 10 after two years of virtual events. Artists include Jimi Hendrix collaborator bassist Hermon Hitson, documentary film subjects the Branchettes, Sacred Soul of North Carolina Revue, Grammy nominee Joe Troop, and Music Maker Blues Revue.
The Town of Carrboro, North Carolina presents this series of live concerts every Friday evening between May 13 and June 10 at the Carrboro Town Commons. The series is a collaboration between Town of Carrboro Recreation, Parks, and Culture Resources; the Music Maker Foundation; and WUNC 91.5FM.
An annual event, the concert series highlights and celebrates the legacy of GRAMMY-winning folk and blues artist and North Carolina Music Hall of Famer Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten, born in Carrboro, North Carolina in 1893. Cotten’s soulful voice and unique guitar style have rendered her a legend in the world of blues, leading her to receive National Heritage Fellowship in 1984 and a GRAMMY award in 1985. She lived to be 104 years old and died in 1987. Her songs, like the iconic “Freight Train,” and “Shake Sugaree,” have been reimagined by artists like The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and Taj Mahal.
Music Maker Foundation honors Cotten’s legacy in the world of American roots music by emphasizing the cultural diversity, complexity, and vitality of her music and the music of many other artists local to her community and all over the country.
Carrboro is located just west of Chapel Hill in the Central Piedmont region of North Carolina.

Just in case:
Mar 20 is "World Story Telling Day." Storytelling is a communication method like no other. It can travel through space and time and still have relevance to the present day. And while surely they are focusing on actual storytelling I will always put a music spin on it. The wild and true, and fictional and happy, silly, sexy, confessional and sadness of a lifetime of song-stories. The human power of sheer storytelling via music. And might I add, with it being St. Patrick's Day today, you know there are a myriad of stories and songs of Irish lore that are truly quintessential.
