Hill Country Meets Soulful Mississippi Vocals at the Gin
|
(INDIANOLA, MS) - On April 7th B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center (400 Second St.) in Indianola, Mississippi, presents First Thursdays with Mark “Muleman” Massey in the B.B. King Gin!
Born in the Mississippi Delta, Mark learned the true meaning of the Blues down on Parchman Farm Penitentiary. He was taught by David Kimbrough, the son of Jr. Kimbrough, how to play the guitar inside Parchman, and soon after, Mark joined the Parchman Prison Band.
After Mark left Parchman, he followed his love for the blues towards bettering himself. Along the way, he met blues legend Big Jack Johnson. Johnson became both a mentor and friend to Mark and even gave him the nickname "Muleman."
25 years later, Muleman has played a host of festivals across Mississippi including opening for B.B. King at his annual homecoming festival the last few years King performed. He's been featured in the online blues show Moonshine and Mojo Hands and the culinary television show, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. Muleman has gone on to become the youngest white Blues musician to be on a Mississippi Blues Trail Marker located at the front gates of Parchman Farm.

Mary Stokes Band :: CLOUDS IN MY HEART
|
|
The Mary Stokes Band, Clouds In My Heart, is available for download or limited-edition CDs on Bandcamp now!
The Mary Stokes Band are Ireland’s foremost blues band, with an established international reputation of over 25 years, and have performed with blues greats John Lee Hooker, BB King, Taj Mahal, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino and many more. Partners Mary Stokes and Brian Palm have led The Mary Stokes Band, performing at blues festivals and venues across Ireland, USA and Europe.
With over 10 album releases, The Mary Stokes Band released their album Comin’ Home during the global pandemic. As independent artists, the pandemic obliged Mary and Brian to seek out new ways to deliver their music to the public. Comin’ Home was independently released on Bandcamp in 2021 and has been an incredible success, reaching audiences through worldwide radio play and sales. The album was named Blues and Roots Radio “Album of the Year” for 2021.
With new recordings started, 2022 sees the first international release of The Mary Stokes Band’s seminal live album, Clouds In My Heart, originally recorded just before Christmas,1999. It was possibly the last blues record of the 20th Century and definitely one of the first of the new millennium. The popular success of the "as live" album Comin' Home (2020) inspired them to relaunch the fully live Clouds In My Heart to a broader audience. Recorded in the landmark Bruxelles in Dublin, this album captures the live energy and vitality for which The Mary Stokes Band are widely known. This is the first time this album has been available other than at band's live shows.
Clouds In My Heart features Mary Stokes, vocals; Brian Palm, harmonica; Dermot Stokes, piano; Graham Hynes, guitar; Eoin O'Doherty, drums; Ken Matthews bass guitar; and Felim Gormley, saxophones.

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
|
MARCH
• Women's History Month
APRIL
• International Guitar Month
• National Humor Month
• Easter April 17
Birthdays upcoming of note:
Mar 31 Big Maceo Merriweather (1905-1953), Lowell Fulson (1921-1999), Lizzie Miles pictured (1895-1963); April 1 Lucille Bogan (1897–1948), Alberta Hunter (1895–1984), Joseph Amos Milburn, Jr. (1927–1980); April 2 Marvin Gaye (1939–1984); April 3 Mitch Woods (1951); April 4 Muddy Waters McKinley Morganfield (1913-1983); April 5 Larry McCray (1960), Paul Oscher (1950–2021); April 6 Big Walter Horton (1918–1981) Warren Haynes (1960); April 7 Billie Holiday (1915-1959), Bo Collins (1932); April 8 “Little Ed” Williams (1955); April 9 Mance Lipscomb (1895–1976); April 10 John Brim (1922–2003) Rosco Gordon (1928-2002), Shemekia Copeland (1979)...
Just in case:
April 1 is "April Fool's Day" ...a day for all you pranksters... a day which begin to take off bigtime as early as the 1700s... always love to hear that people kept a sense of humor in spite of or because of possible harsher circumstances.
April 1st is also..."International Fun At Work Day"... ummm?! Well, this April 1st is on a Friday and sometimes the term "work" is subjective.
If you're a musician, than your "work" is generally fun all the time, right?
Hey, April 3 is "World Party Day!" ALRIGHT!
Well, between all this and it being "International Guitar Month" and National Humor Month," April is kind of topping my list of faves at the moment!
