Sneak Peek of our 2022 Blues Festival Guide
|
It’s our 20th Anniversary edition of the Blues Festival Guide, and we’ve loved being a part of your blues community!
It's official and we could barely wait to announce and showoff our 2022 cover by photographer Marilyn Stringer featuring the talented Tullie Brae and Calvin Johnson at the 2021 North Atlantic Blues Festival!
Our team is hard at work wrapping the 2022 issue, and we’re looking forward to bringing you the latest happenings in the industry, glimpses of blues history and, of course, blues festivals to plan your calendar! Here’s an editorial sneak peek!
Living Legend: Billy Branch By Bill Dahl - Once the new kid on the Chicago blues block, Billy Branch is now revered as the city’s premier harmonica master.
Fueling Musicians Program - Put together by Joe Bonamassa during the pandemic, the program is designed to support and assist musicians
WLAC: Blues, Baby Chicks and Stim-U-Aid By Reverend Billy C. Wirtz - The Reverend schools us on WLAC – the “clear channel” radio station that was legendary in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s for spreading the blues far and wide across the U.S. (and beyond!) on its nighttime programming.
That Chicago Blues Sound By Wayne Baker Brooks - The Chicago blues catapulted the blues genre into the mainstream in 1948 when Muddy Waters amplified his sound, but the foundation for this revolution was built decades earlier by established artists…
20 Years of Blues By Kaati Gaffney, Publisher - The Blues Festival Guide is celebrating its 20th anniversary issue! Learn more about our journey from the gals who started it all, and enjoy reminiscing on our past issues. What’s Cookin’ - Blueswoman Shaun Murphy shares her authentic Italian family recipe for Pasta all’Amatriciana plus tips and tricks
Hooked on Blues Docs - During the pandemic, Tom Andrews of the Blues Festival Guide team had the opportunity to dig in and enjoy some recent blues documentaries. Check out his recommendations and enjoy!
Trumpet Records – Small But Powerful Courtesy of the Delta Blues Museum - From 1950 to 1955, the music of Trumpet Records sounded from coast to coast and their recordings are a testament to Mississippi’s musical gift to the world.
And more!...

Photo Moments with the 19th Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Here's multi-award-winning guitarist, singer, songwriter Zac Harmon at Bob Corritore's Rhythm Room in Phoenix, Arizona following the Blues Blast festival. Among his many accolades, his soulful bluesy style has earned him a 2022 Blues Music Award (BMA) Nomination for "Soul Blues Album of The Year," for Long As I've Got My Guitar.
Zac, a Jackson MS native, has played with a plethora of top artists since the young age of 16 and continued his successful musical journey in Los Angeles, as well as writing, recording and producing for major artists.
In 2004 Zac Harmon & Mid-South Blues Revue won the IBC and in 2006 he won the coveted Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut.” Later that year, he was featured in Blues Revue magazine as one of the 10 artists that “represent the future of the blues.” Harmon continues on his exciting and fulfilling road since.

Arhoolie’s April Deep Dive
|
This month Arhoolie Records is highlighting the work of two longtime members of the extended Arhoolie family, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, in anticipation of their forthcoming album Get On Board: The Songs of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. Both musicians first crossed paths with Chris Strachwtiz in the 1960s at the Ash Grove.
As part of our "Deep Dive," we are debuting a great interview that Chris conducted with Ry in 1981, in which Ry discusses putting together his multi-faceted band of Tex-Mex players and gospel singers. Ry also shares insights from his foray into all-digital recording.
Meanwhile, on our website we are sharing some intimate photos of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee taken at a private jam session in Berkeley with Jesse Fuller!
Lastly, we are sharing another video from the Arhoolie vault of Taj Mahal performing "Take This Hammer" at the Arhoolie 50th Anniversary show. We salute Ry and Taj for helping to keep roots music alive and vital through the years, and we look forward to hearing their new album!
Visit Arhoolie’s Deep Dives page to see it all plus you can find archives.
