Photo Moments with the 19th Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Here's revered guitarist, bandleader, and producer Anson Funderburgh (lt) with drummer, singer, songwriter bandleader Big Joe Maher
on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.
Multi-Award winning Chicago and Texas blues master, Funderburgh has maintained Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets since the late 70's. The band featured vocalist Darrell Nulisch until he moved on '85, then singer, harpman Sam Meyers filled that spot until his death in 2006. Anson's also played and recorded with and produced his and countless artists and their award-winning projects.
Maher's 5-pc band, Big Joe & The Dynaflows, serve up a tasty and fun mix of jump blues and have recorded several award-winning albums. Over time Big Joe has shared the stage and either backed up, opened up or recorded with many top music legends like Willie Dixon, Mick Fleetwood, Otis Rush and many more. Maher played on Delbert McClinton's 2019 Grammy winning CD, Tall Dark & Handsome.

The Friends of the Blues presents The Final Show April 26
|
(BOURBONNAIS, IL) - The Friends of the Blues present — The Final Show featuring Too Slim and the Taildraggers Tuesday, April 26, 7pm, on the patio at the Bradley Bourbonnais Sportsmen’s Club (2672 Chippewa Dr.) Bourbonnais, Illinois. There is a cover charge and food and beverages available for purchase, and there will be Door Prizes.
It seems fitting that the last show being promoted by current Friends of the Blues leaders, James and Susan Walker, and their first show in 1999 would be the same band, Too Slim and the Taildraggers from the State of Washington. The Friends of the Blues is a local free group of live music lovers. Their earliest incarnation, “Wooden Boxes and Steel Strings,” had their initial experiment of bringing big name artists to our area when Too Slim and The Taildraggers first performed in the Kankakee valley area at the former Kaper’s Hardware House in Watseka. Since then, Too Slim’s many return engagements have become much anticipated events.
In deciding to fold the tent, Walker stated, “My wife and I were ‘old’ when we started promoting these Friends of the Blues’ concert parties, and that was 16 years ago! Covid-19 killed our shows for 2020 and 2021 as well as wounding the entire entertainment industry. So, now seems like a good time for us to end with one final concert. It would be nice to find a new promoter to take over, but no one has yet stepped forward.”
Tim “Too Slim” Langford has been a monster guitarist and unabashed blues-rocker for 36 years. Langford has released 24 albums, the most recent being 2020’s, The Remedy. continue reading.. By James Walker/Iroquois County’s Times-Republic

St. Louis Blues One Day Fest
|
(ST. LOUIS, MO) - The Missouri History Museum, in collaboration with the National Blues Museum, will host "St. Louis Blues, a One-Day Fest" on Saturday, May 7, from 1pm-6pm. The free, one-day festival will explore blues music from its African roots to its contemporary expressions through live musical performances and activities for all ages. A high-energy performance by acclaimed St. Louis Blues musician Ms. Hy-C and Fresh Start — winner of the 2019 International Blues Challenge — will close out the one-day festival.
St. Louis Sound, is a 6,000-square-foot special exhibit at the Missouri History Museum that explores the history of popular music in St. Louis from the dawn of recorded sound in the late 1800s to the turn of the 21st century. A major section of the exhibit explores the origins and history of blues music in St. Louis including Deep Morgan and historic blues music venues. The Missouri History Museum's beloved Twilight Thursdays’ concert series returns on May 12, and music lovers won't want to miss The Albert King Alumni Tribute Band event on June 2.

Piedmont Blues & Roots Festival Honors Native Sons May 14
|
(LAURENS, SC) - The City of Laurens, South Carolina will host the inaugural Piedmont Blues & Roots Festival on May 14, from 10am-10pm on the Historic Square (119 E. Laurens St.). Laurens has deep Blues roots with Piedmont artists like the Rev. Gary Davis and Pink Anderson who were both born and raised in Laurens County, and this event looks to embrace and celebrate these Blues roots annually.
The all-day festival will feature food, a custom bourbon cocktail, a vinyl record swap, a biscuit cook-off and eating contest, and the best Piedmont Blues out there. The 2022 lineup includes Veronika Jackson, Andy Cohen, Hunter Holmes, Freddie Vanderford, Ali Kafka, Lon Eldridge, Steve McGaha, and Chicago-based bluesman Joey J. Saye.
Event organizer Hunter Holmes, a Laurens’ native, musician and roots music aficionado, said the festival will honor the county’s most famous musicians. It will also pay homage to lesser-known artists who played roots music locally in the early 20th century, setting a path for blues, rock and country music that would be recorded by a plethora of artists following.

Just in case:
April 25 is "National Telephone Day." Did you know in 1876 Inventor Elisha Gray filed a patent for the telephone within hours of Alexander Graham Bell, but Bell's patent gets approved first. We've come a long, long way from a tin can and a string! HA! What would we have done without the telephone? Now we have "Smart" phones and barely use them to talk on!
Back in 1946 Louis Jordan declared, "Buzz me , buzz me baby, I'll be waiting for your call. If you forgot the number... come on over, you won't have to call at all." In 1951 Lightnin' Hopkins sounded a bit frustrated when he exclaimed, "Hello Central, will you please give me 209, yes, you know I wanna talk to my baby, oh Lord, she is way down the line." In 1956 Peewee Crayton worried, "The telephone is ringin', lord, and baby's on the line... I'm afraid to even answer, 'cause I know what's on her mind." John Lee Hooker cried, "I ain't got nobody now people, just me and my telephone." In 1960 Elmore James sounded pretty stoked when he sang, "I just talked to my baby, on the telephone, she said 'stop what you're doing and come on home... I can't hold out!'" Indeed... now we can barely holdout for the next new phone model!
