Anthony Geraci :: BLUES CALLED MY NAME
|
|
Just 82 seconds into Anthony Geraci’s new album, Blues Called My Name on Blue Heart Records, there’s no doubt you’re in the recorded presence of a consummate keyboardist. Solidly backed by Paul Loranger on acoustic bass, Jeff Armstrong on drums, and mostly Charlie O’Neal on guitar, Geraci offers up ten self-produced originals, which showcase his stunning piano and Hammond organ prowess.
To open, Geraci’s “Old Pine Box” is a rollicking ode to mortality with vocals by Sugar Ray Norcia. Lost love, the most popular themes of the blues, has Geraci maintaining the tradition in the title track, “The Blues Called My Name.” However, Geraci neither casts blame nor reveals many specifics, but simply states his profound sadness via Sugar Ray’s vocals. The track is punctuated by stinging guitar from guest Monster Mike Welch and strident barrelhouse piano from Geraci.
Back-to-back instrumentals follow. “About Last Night” is an abrupt and intriguing stylistic shift into a Hammond organ-fueled Latin rhythm, and “Boston Stomp” is a vigorous piano workout. “Corner of Heartbreak and Pain,” features vocals of Erika Van Pelt. Geraci then lightens his load in the jaunty “I Go Ooh,” which features his sole vocal of the album.
Walter Trout delivers on “Into the Night,” as does Geraci on both piano and Hammond. Then Sugar Ray is back at the vocal mic for “I Ain’t Gonna Ask” before the set concludes with another pair of instrumentals.
With a guest appearance by Anne Harris on violin, “Wading Through Vermillion” shifts musical gears and turns to parading as a Big Easy feel takes over this penultimate tune. Finally, and fittingly, the album closer is a piano-only track entitled “Song For Planet Earth” in which Geraci reminds us one last time of his dazzling talent evident on every track on “Blues Called My Name.”

20th Annual Blues Festival Guide

20th Annual Blues Festival Guide Magazine Digital Edition Released on our website
|
You can not only get a hard copy of the magazine via select festivals, blues societies or by ordering, but our 20th Anniversary digital edition of the Blues Festival Guide has been launched and is available on our website! Click the image at left to read and enjoy all 84 pages. Don't forget to turn on the speaker to hear Tulle Brae singing "Seven Bridges."
Blues music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd. Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and as you know, offers our weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls our magazine: "The roadmap to everything blues". Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
Our cover by photographer Marilyn Stringer features the talented Tullie Brae and Calvin Johnson at the 2021 North Atlantic Blues Festival!

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
|
• July 20 National Moon Day...
to honor man's first moon landing
Birthdays upcoming of note:
July 14-Claude (d.2003) & Clifford Trenier (d.1983) (b. 1919); July 15-Willie Cobbs (1932-2021); Washboard Sam aka Robert Brown (1910–1966); July 16-Denise LaSalle (1939-2018); July 17-Peppermint Harris (1925–1999); July 18 Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins (1929–2000), Martha Reeves (1941), Lonnie Mack (1941-2016); July 19 Buster Benton (1932-1996), Little Freddie King (1940); July 20 Carlos Santana (1947), Steve Freund (1952), Sleepy LaBeef (1935-2019); July 21 Floyd McDaniel (1915-1995); July 22- George Clinton (1940); July 23 Tony Joe White (1943-2018)
Just in Case: "World Youth Skills Day" is celebrated on July 15. This got me thinking of young people that are interested or may become in music. They should be encouraged to share their passion which in turn, in my experience, can build their confidence and creativity. Of course they should be introduced to the fact that Blues is the roots of popular music and that opens up the door to history as well. They may become musicians, songwriters, studio engineers, music teachers, artists, music publicists or editors, promoters, producers, venue owners, managers, clothing or set designers... The list is broad and colorful and still incorporates the passion for music. At the very least they will have been introduced to the possibilities. (Image credit: Blues Camp)
